Beaver Electives-3rd Cycle (Electivas en Beaver)

Dear Parents and Students, Our mission at Beaver Technology Center is to provide an interactive learning environment where learning is enriched through real­world experiences using the latest technology and unique resources so that all students are successful builders of their own futures. We are excited to announce the kickoff of our College and Career Readiness Elective Program which supports this mission by providing students with unique extracurricular opportunities. The purpose of this program is to support 21st century skills which require student to work with others, create, and solve real­world problems. Electives will provide students opportunities to explore new areas of interest or to study a particular area in depth. This program offers courses in the following disciplines: basic engineering, computer science, science studies, multimedia, and interdisciplinary studies. Electives have been designed to include all grade levels and multiple topics. Electives will take place on Friday mornings, from 8:00 a.m.­9:00 a.m. and each elective will last approximately 8 weeks. Students will have an opportunity to sign­up for a different elective during the third registration period in March. The registration window opens on March 25th. Electives will officially begin on Friday, April 10th. Students will register online at school on Wednesday, March 25th. Electives will be capped to maintain optimum facilitator­student ratios, but we will do our best to honor first, second, or third choices. A lottery system will be used when there are more interested students than available seats to determine course rosters. To help us with this initial registration process, please be sure to select three clubs. If you do not have access to the internet at home, the Beaver computer lab is available for registration. The following list is a basic overview of the clubs that will be offered during the first club cycle. More information about club descriptions and what is offered at different grade levels is available in the Beaver Elective Catalog below.

Estimados Padres y Estudiantes, Nuestra misión en el Centro Tecnológico de Beaver es proporcionar un entorno de aprendizaje interactivo en el que el aprendizaje se enriquece a través de las experiencias del mundo real utilizando la última tecnología y recursos únicos de manera que todos los estudiantes son exitosos constructores de su propio futuro. 3­D Digital Modeling (4th­5th) Facilitators: Mrs. Waldie­Marston Are you interested in design? Do you love to create and build? 3­D Digital Modeling ties your interest in design to technology. You will learn to use a professional program, Google SketchUp, to create 3Dmodels. Sketchup can be used for architecture, engineering, and 3D printing! Throughout this elective you will digitally build prototypes to complete the challenge of the week. 3­D Modelado Digital(4th­5th) Facilitadores: Mrs. Waldie­Marston ¿Estas interesado en diseñar? Te gusta crear y construir? Modelos en Tercera Dimensión vincula tus intereses en diseño a la tecnología. Tu vas a aprender como usar un program profesional, Google SketchUp, para crear modelos 3­D. We will grow fruits such as berries, tomatoes, and cantaloupes in the Beaver greenhouse. We will also grow vegetables such parsley, basil, beans, spinach and lettuce. As a Beaver Botanist, you will have the opportunity for hands­on learning, exploration, observation, and experimentation with different types of fruits and vegetables. We’ll visit the Dallas Farmers’ Market and set up our own market. As a Beaver Botanist, you’ll have the opportunity for hands­on learning, inquiry, observation, and experimentation with different types of fruits and vegetables. You will learn how to plant, grow, and harvest your own food! We’ll visit the Dallas Farmer’s Market and look for foods that can be used in a variety of dishes and that we can grow in our school greenhouse. When our food is ready to harvest, we’ll hold our own Farmer’s Market where parents and community members can come to purchase the food we’ve grown. Foods we’ll grow ­ potatoes, kale, radishes, strawberries, cabbage, peas, tomatoes, and herbs. Computer Science (3rd­5th) Facilitators: Mr. Spurlock This club will provide basic HTML, CSS, and Javascript structures and organization. Introducing kids to code reveals a whole new world and helps them understand how computers influence the world around us. It gives them the ability both to read and to write in the foundational languages of the digital age and, in doing so, fundamentally transforms their perspective from that of user to maker, consumer and creator. ***Prerequisites: Home computer, willingness to practice outside of club time, good typing skills*** Ciencias de Computación (3rd ­5th) Facilitador: Mr. Spurlock Este club ofrecerá HTML básico, CSS, y estructuras Javascript. Students will dig deeper into many of the interesting topics in American history and take a creative, technological, and interactive approach to learning about both the successes and failures of the past in order to help shape the future. Invention Convention (3rd­5th) Facilitators: Mrs. Fontaine, Mrs. McElroy & Mrs. Luna Use your creative mind to invent and present your ideas. Students will collaborate and create an invention to present to the Shark Tank (teachers, parents, community). This course inspires students to form ideas for new inventions that can be used to solve real world problems. Students are given a choice of 3­4 problems. They pick one problem that they want to create an invention that will enrich the lives of others. The top three winners will showcase inventions on the announcements. Convocatoria de Inventores (3rd­5th) Facilitators: Mrs. Fontaine, Mrs. McElroy & Mrs. Luna Utiliza tu mente creativa para inventar y presentar tus ideas. In the Journalism course, you will create a school newspaper that is run entirely by Beaver students. You will come up with ideas, conduct interviews, write the articles, and take the photographs. You will learn everything there is to know about the journalism process from planning articles to writing stories and artwork, to publishing the paper. You will participate in the editing/publishing process, developing new skills, and mastering old ones. Periodismo (K­3rd) Facilitadores: Ms. Castilleja, Ms. Young & Ms. Young ¿Alguna vez has querido ser parte de un personal del periódico? ¡Ahora usted puede! The Beaver Leadership Academy (BLA) is a leadership development program that integrates service learning and leadership development strategies to assist students in developing the skills necessary to lead effectively. Primary Lego Engineering (K­2nd) Facilitators: Ms. Martinez, Mrs. Madkins & Mrs. Shevlin Students will follow construction schematics to build structures using levers, wheels, and pulleys. After completing the suggested structure, students will collaborate and create a more complex structures to meet a given challenge. Ingeniería Lego Primaria (K­2nd) Facilitadores: Ms. Martinez, Mrs. Madkins & Mrs. Shevlin Los estudiantes seguirán esquemas de construcción para construir las estructuras que utilizan palancas, ruedas y poleas. Intermediate Lego Engineering (3rd­5th) Facilitators: Mr. Martinez & Ms. Gilliland Students will follow construction schematics to build sophisticated structures using levers, wheels, and pulleys. They will develop and enhance problem solving and critical thinking skills and learn key concepts and vocabulary of engineering and architecture. After completing the specific schematic designs, students will be challenged to enhance the structures and create a more complex or motorized version of their designs. Basic We Do Lego Robotics (1st­3rd) Facilitators: Ms. Gatton & UTD & NGHS Students This club is designed to capture students’ curiosity and direct it toward discovering how science, technology, engineering, and math impact the world around them. This club features a real­world challenge to be explored through research, critical thinking and imagination. Teams will build motorized models made of LEGO elements and will apply their knowledge of simple machines to create brief videos explaining the process. Magic Tree House (K­2nd) Facilitators: Mrs. Arango & Mrs. Cardona Imagine waking up in Garland and being transported to a different time or place around the world! In this elective, students will readMagic Tree House stories and explore places, travel in time, and learn about different cultures through reading. Students will use basic tech tools and software to create videos, iBooks, and music. For the final project, students will create a comprehensive iMovie that will showcase all they have learned. Magic Tree House Casa del Arbol Magico (K­2nd) Facilitadores: Mrs. Arango & Mrs. Cardona Imagínese despertar en Garland y ser transportado a un tiempo o lugar diferente de todo el mundo! Students will explore various healthcare opportunities and learn how to respond to common first aid emergencies, including burns; cuts; head, neck, back injuries and more. Come and see if you have what it takes to survive in this high paced field! As a crafter, you will interact and collaborate in a customized world, on a special MinecraftEDU modded Server for Beaver Tech. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, expert, master, pro, or even a noob at Minecraft, join us!!! MineCrafters(2­5) Facilitadores: Mrs. Ariza and the University of Texas at Dallas ¿Piensas que Minecraft es un videojuego? Piensa otra vez. Minecraft te da la oportunidad de crear, explorar y poner tus habilidades de resolución de problemas a prueba con guiones gráficos y diseño de niveles. Paleontology (Dinosaurs 3rd­5th) Facilitators: Ms Ramirez & Mrs. Pelayo Dino Club will be an engaging learning experience to anyone interested in palaeontology. We hope that this course will inspire the next generation of dinosaur researchers, and help excite the imagination of the general population. Students will be able to research different dinosaurs, learn about their habitat, the different time periods, etc. Paleontología (Dinosaurios 3rd­5th) Facilitadores: Ms Ramirez & Mrs. Pelayo Dino Club será una experiencia de aprendizaje para todos los interesados en la paleontología. Esperamos que este curso inspire a la próxima generación de investigadores de dinosaurios, y ayudar a emocionar la imaginación de la población general. Build 3­D Sculptures! Paint Murals! Create! Students will work together in teams to design and create large scale, colorful art works to be displayed in the public areas of our school. We will also explore the many different types of artists as we invite professionals to come and share their artworks, their ideas and their inspirations with us. Come be a part of this team as we collaborate and create artworks for all to enjoy now and for years to come. Proyecto de Artes Públicas (4th­5th) Facilitadores: Mrs. Calkin & Ms. Nambo A diseñar! Tinkering Thinkers (K­5) Facilitators: Ms. Brooks & Ms. Osborne Do you like to tinker and explore? Do you like to discover how things work? Are you curious? Have you ever imagined using bananas as a piano? Students will have opportunities to imagine, think, plan, and create with a variety of tools, including Makey Makey and programs for the 3D printer. Students will have hands­on experiences to design various projects, including Legos, Snap­circuit, iPad apps, etc. Pensadores Hábiles (K­5) Facilitadores: Ms. Brooks & Ms. Osborne ¿Le gusta juguetear y explorar? ¿Le gusta descubrir cómo funcionan las cosas? ¿Tienes curiosidad? ¿Alguna vez has imaginado usando plátanos como un piano? Coding is the new literacy! Learn basic programming concepts on iPads and Macbooks. Students will program their own interactive stories and games using some of their favorite characters (Angry Birds, Frozen’s Anna and Elsa, Zombies, Ice Age, Flappy Bird, etc). In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, develop foundational sequence and math skills, work collaboratively, and express themselves creatively on the computer. Aprenda los conceptos básicos de programación en iPads y MacBooks. Los estudiantes programar sus propias historias y juegos que utilizan algunos de sus personajes favoritos interactivos (Angry Birds, Anna de Congelados y Elsa, Zombies, Ice Age, Flappy Pájaro, etc). En el proceso, aprenden a resolver problemas, proyectos de diseño, desarrollar fundacionales de secuencia y matemáticas, trabajar en colaboración, y expresarse de forma creativa en el equipo. World Cultures 2 (2nd­3rd ) Facilitators: Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Sinclair & Ms. Rohmer Hi! Hola! Ni Hao! Bonjour! Hallo! Xin chao! Do you enjoy learning about other countries? Travel around the globe with the World Cultures Club to learn about different countries from around the world! Students will discover 8 diverse cultures by exploring food, art, career opportunities, song, language, and video. Students will research facts about each country and compile them into a passport. Most importantly, students will gain an appreciation and understanding for our friends around the world and envision a possible future in these foreign lands! Culturas del Mundo 2 (2nd­3rd) Facilitadores: Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Sinclair & Ms. Rohmer Hi! Hola! Ni Hao! Bonjour! Hallo! Xin chao! ¿Le gusta aprender sobre otros países? Viaja por todo el mundo con el Club de las Culturas del Mundo para aprender acerca de los diferentes países de todo el mundo! Los estudiantes descubrirán 8 diversas culturas mediante la exploración de la comida, el arte, las oportunidades de carrera, el canto, el lenguaje, y el vídeo. Los estudiantes investigarán hechos sobre cada país y compilarlos en un pasaporte. Más importante aún, los estudiantes obtendrán una apreciación y comprensión para nuestros amigos de todo el mundo y vislumbrar un futuro posible en estas tierras extranjeras!
