    Act One: Prologue

Music: Alan MenkenLyrics: Howard Ashman + Tim RiceBook: Linda WoolvertonPremiere: 1991

Narrator:Once upon a time, in a faraway land,A young Prince lived in a shining castle.Although he had everything his heart desired,The Prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind.

But then, one winter's night,An old beggar woman came to the castleAnd offered him a single RoseIn return for shelter from the bitter cold.

Repulsed by her haggard appearance,The Prince sneered at the gift,And turned the old woman away.

But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances,For Beauty is found within.

And when he dismissed her again,The old woman's ugliness melted awayTo reveal a beautiful Enchantress.

The Prince tried to apologize, but it was too late,For she had seen that there was no love in his heartAnd as punishment,She transformed him into a hideous beast,And placed a powerful spell on the castleAnd all who lived there.

Ashamed of his monstrous form,The beast concealed himself inside his castle,With a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world.

The Rose she had offered,Was truly an enchanted rose,Which would bloom until his twenty-first year.If he could learn to love another,And earn her love in returnBy the time the last petal fell,Then, the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beastFor all time.

Townsfolk:'Cause she really is a funny girlA beauty but a funny girlShe really is a funny girlThat Belle!Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour!

    Belle (Reprise)

Belle:Is he gone? Oh, can you imagine? He askedme to marry him.Me, the wife of that boorish, brainless . . ."Madame Gaston!"Can't you just see it?"Madame Gaston!"His "little wife"

No sir! Not me!I guarantee itI want much more than this provincial life!I want adventure in the great widesomewhereI want it more than I can tellAnd for once it might be grandTo have someone understandI want so much more than they've gotplanned.

    No Matter What

    Belle:Papa, do you think I'm...odd?

Maurice:My daughter odd? Where did you get an idealike that?

Belle:I don't know. It's just that, well, people talk.

    Maurice:They talk about me, too.

Maurice:No, we're not odd, its trueNo fam'ly ever sanerExcept one uncle who...well, maybe let thatpass

In all you say or doYou couldn't make it plainerYou are your mother's daughter; thereforeyou are class

    Belle:

So I should just acceptI'm simply not like them

Maurice:They are the common herdAnd you should take my wordYou are unique: creme de la cremeNo matter what you doI'm on your sideAnd if my point of viewIs somewhat misty-eyed

There's nothing clearer in my lifeThan what I wish and feel for youAnd that's a lot...No matter what

Belle:No matter what they sayYou make me proudI love the funny wayYou stand out from the crowd

Maurice:It's my intention my inventionShows the world out there one dayJust what we've got...

    Belle:No matter what

Maurice:Now some may say all fathers justexaggerate

    Belle:That ev'ry daughter's great?

topsMaurice:She pulls out all the stopsTo praise him

    Belle:

    And quite rightly!

Maurice:No matter what the painWe've come this farI pray that you remainExactly as you areThis really is a case of father knowing best

    Belle:And daughter too!

    Maurice:You're never strange

    Belle:Don't ever change

Both:You're all I've gotNo matter what.

    No Matter What (Reprise)

Maurice:First prize is nearly mineIt's quite my best inventionSo simple, yet complex; So massive, yet sosmallThis triumph of designWill be my old-age pensionThat is, provided I can find the fair at allI must have missed a sign...

    I should have paid attention...Drat!(Wolf howls)That's not a nightingale, and not a matingcall.Wolves!

    Me!

    Gaston:

You've been dreaming, just one dreamNearly all your lifeHoping, scheming, just one theme:Will you be a wife? Will you be some he-man's property?Good news! That he-man's me!

This equation, girl plus manDoesn't help just youOn occasion, women canHave their uses tooMainly to extend the fam'ly treePumpkin, extend with me!

    Gaston:We'll be raising sons galore

    Belle:

    Inconceivable!

    Gaston:Each built six foot four!

    Belle:Unbelievable!

Gaston:Each stuffed with ev'ry Gaston gene!

    Belle:I'm not hearing this!

Gaston:You'll be keeping house with pride!

    Belle:Just incredible!

    Gaston:

    Oh so gratified

    Belle:So unweddable!

Gaston:That you are a part of this idyllic scene.

    Gaston:

Picture this: A rustic hunting lodge,my latest kill roasting over the fire,my little wife massaging my feet, whilethe little ones play on the floor with the dogs. We'll have six or seven!

    Belle:Dogs?

    Gaston:No, Belle! Strapping boys...like me!

    Belle:Imagine that!

Gaston:I can see that we will share

All that love impliesWe shall be a perfect pairRather like my thighsYou are face to face with destiny! All roads lead to...The best things in life are...All's well that ends with me!Escape me? There's no way

Certain as "Do, Re,"Belle, when you marry...

Gaston:So Belle, what would it be?Is it "yes", or is it "oh, yes"?

    Belle:I...I just don't deserve you!

    Gaston:Who does?ME!

    Something There

There's something sweetAnd almost kind,But he was mean, and he was course, and unrefined. But now he's dear, and so unsure...I wonder why I didn't see it there before.
