CASE STUDY
BEAUTIFUL BOWEN PROJECT
The Beautiful Bowen Project was initiated by Whitsunday Regional Council with a view to promote Bowen and to enhance its ‘visibility’ and identity. As part of the Whitsunday Region, Bowen has a diversity of landscapes, local features and environments.
Council wanted to enhance its image to in order to attract visitors, build community pride and improve economic investment. SLR was commissioned to generate concepts for the public realm, including upgrades and improvements to streetscapes, signage and wayfinding.
After undertaking a site analysis, opportunities and constraints, a series of key character elements were identified that captured the identity of Bowen and helped to set a direction for concepts.
Understanding the ‘sense of arrival’ into Bowen was also important in looking for opportunities to promote the town. A concept report was produced identifying two main areas of improvement to Bowen: new entry signage/ markers at key arrival points and townscape upgrades leading up to and along Herbert Street.
The Entry marker along the Bruce Highway creates a striking and identifiable entry marker into Bowen reflecting the colour and vibrancy of the town as well as its tropical setting.
The townscape improvements into the CBD and along Herbert Street will help to improve wayfinding, identity and town character. They will also help to create a more amenable pedestrian environment with the addition of shade and feature planting, furniture and art elements.
