JGT performed the Beaufort County Boating Needs Assessment in 1993. This report identified public access facilities in the County that needed improvements to bring them up to State standards,
prioritized needs, and outlined a phased schedule of improvements for rehabilitating all of the
County boat landings.
In 1997, it was time to begin implementing some of the recommended improvements. JGT worked
with the County to prioritize levels of improvements at Steel Bridge Boat Landing on the Combahee
River, Parris Island Boat Landing on Battery Creek, and at C.C. Haigh Boat Landing on Mackay Creek. JGT also performed a feasibility study for construction of a new public access facility on
Broad Creek on Hilton Head Island.
At the Steel Bridge Boat Landing, the existing boat ramp and floating dock were relocated to make better use of the site. The facility received a new concrete ramp, and the existing floating dock was
reused and reconfigured to provide more docking space. The Parris Island Boat Landing received a
full-facility upgrade. The existing concrete boat ramp was replaced and a new, ground out floating dock was installed to assist boaters. The parking and circulation was reconfigured to provide more
spaces and a more efficient use of the site. An additional low freeboard floating dock, designed
specifically for non-motorized boats was installed at the C.C, Haigh Boat Landing to provide a facility for the numerous rowing and paddling enthusiasts on Hilton Head Island.
