Sincc the eastet n El Salvaior area is ve:]' poorly known archaeol-ogicatli/it was felL that a Drefjminary classiSjcation and analysis ot the avaifableccramic col IecL-ion would be usef ul- cven though limited infcrences canbe made about the site itself. Study of the ceramics would lay a

foundation for future f iel-d work at the site and would permit a generalassessment of cultural associations. \.iith these qoal,s in mind, a six-v¡eck- laL,oratory pro j e.t r,'as ca::ricC cut, f unded by USICiT' s AcademicSpec ial j,s t Program.

An aDproach was developed based on considerations of what would pro3 -rce

the most beneficial resufts given the limited tine availabfe as wel-l- asthe nature of the ceramic data and the circumstances under which it hadbeen obta inecl .

The prolect's two objectives were :

I. To make a general comparison of E.he Asanyanba coffection wirhceramic sequences known from the archaeolooicaf Iiterature in order to¡qcasq +é-nc)ral Dl a.e'¡p.1. ¡¡.r qnlr ia1 ¡SSOC_i¡tiOn.

2. To prepare ictailed d€scriptjons for types found rr Asanyanbathat hf,ve not prev jously been caref ully ciescribed in .-he 1j r-erature.This should serve as a working rcference for future research both at
