BEATTY-FLEMING SR. P.S. Home of the Panthers! Home of P.R.I.D.E.! Proud Respectful Intense Determined Enthusiastic Principal and Vice Principal’s Message Smartphones, tablets, iPads, laptops, desk tops and wireless access have all become an integrated part of our daily lives. Technology has transformed the way we live, work, and learn and will continue to do so next month, next year, and beyond. As parents and educators, when we look at educating the next generation it is important to remember an old proverb, “Do not limit our children to our way of thinking for they were born in a different time.” One can only imagine 20 years from now what role technology will play in their everyday lives. That being said, we also need to realize that technology alone is not the future. Many other skills will be necessary for success. At Beatty-Fleming, technology is a tool for learning. It is one of many instructional strategies that we use to enhance the learning process. As parents, grandparents and guardians you can do a lot to support technology and learning. It is very important that you familiarize yourself with the wireless and online tools that students use to connect with their friends. Who are they talking to, messaging, texting and what are they saying? What are they posting to twitter, to facebook, to instagram? Are they taking selfies and sharing them online? This is especially true with adolescents. Technology, like any tool, requires guidance, supervision and teaching at school, and at home Technology is a tool for learning. And I quote from the agenda “Students will demonstrate appropriate online conduct and manners and refrain from improper/unethical use of technology, including computer hacking and cyberbullying. The Internet, wireless access, and/or texting must not be used for any purpose that violates the Beatty-Fleming Code of Conduct. This applies to school, work and home internet use.” As partners in education, teachers need your support, and you theirs, to ensure technology is used effectively and respectfully. Sincerely, Mr. S. This is but a small sample of some amazing art work

done by our Grade 7 students. They were using ratios

to develop an understanding of proportion. There was

also a focus on drawing organs based on function and

observation rather than symbols.

February has come to an end, and with it comes the end of our dance unit. During our Dance unit, students created a flashmob routine to the Aretha Franklin song "Respect", including original choreography by both Mrs. Routhier and all individual students in the school. February also saw the continuation of the boys basketball league play, as well as the girls’ first basketball tournament of the season. The boys team finished the regular season strong, qualifying for the playoffs, as the second ranked team in tier 2 play. The boys look to continue their strong play and improvement in the upcoming playoffs. The girls team participated in a warm up tournament at Eldorado Public School, where they had a strong showing winning two games and coming just short of a third with an overtime loss. The tournament was an excellent warm-up and practice for their upcoming divisional tournament, which will be hosted at Beatty-Fleming, March 26.

February also included our annual Winter Activity Day, where the students enjoyed many opportunities to enjoy either skiing, snowboarding, skating and bowling. Over 100 students enjoyed an outstanding day skiing and snowboarding at Mansfield ski club.

With the change of the calendar to March comes a new unit, ball hockey. Students have now begun ball hockey in gym classes, which will prepare them to participate in the lunch time intramural's, as well as provide the skills and confidence to try out for the upcoming school teams, which have a proud history of numerous championships for both the boys and girls teams. In addition to march break, students can also look forward to the upcoming staff versus student basketball games, where the Boys basketball team will have a chance to take on the still undefeated and reigning world champion Teachers Team!

As part of our Shakespeare unit the kids must take the

"hot seat" as a character from the play. Other students

ask these characters questions that they want answered

relating to the play, and the students must answer staying

in character and using their knowledge of the character’s

personality, actions and beliefs. It is improv, English

class style!:)) Extended French Class

This is a picture of our 807 90-

Day Challenge. We are on Day 30.

Each student chose an individual

goal and will be working towards

it for 90 Days. The goals do not

have to be academic and range

from physical goals to designing

and sewing an outfit to learning

a new language to learning a new

skill like cross-stitch.

Character Education at Beatty-Fleming The key to communication and having power and influence with people can be summed up in one sentence: Seek first to understand, then be understood.. In other words, listen first, talk next. This is Habit # 5 and it works! If you see things from another’s point of view before sharing your own, a whole new world of understanding will be opened up to you. Five Poor Listening Skills Spacing out: Someone is talking to us but we ignore them because our mind is wandering. Pretend Listening: We pretend we are listening by making insightful comments at key junctures. Selective Listening: We pay attention to only a part of the conversation that interests us. Word Listening: We listen to just the words and give no value to the body language, feelings or the true meaning behind the words said. Self-centred Listening: We see everything from our point of view. It is a game off one-upmanship, where we try to one-up each other as if conversations were a competition! Genuine Listening Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears: To hear what other people are saying, you need to listen to what they are NOT saying! Stand in their shoes: You must try to see the world as they see it and try to feel as they feel. Practice Mirroring: Think like a mirror—it doesn’t judge; it doesn’t advice; it reflects. Repeat back in your own words what the other person is saying and feeling. If you take the time to understand and listen to your parents, 2 things will happen: you’ll gain a greater respect for them; and you’ll get your way much more often. If they feel that you understand them, they’ll be much more willing to listen to you, they’ll be more flexible, and they’ll trust you more. So, how can you better understand your parents? Start by asking some questions:. When is the last time you asked mom or dad, “How was your day today?” “Tell me what you like and don’t like about your job.” “Is there anything I could do to help around the house?” You have 2 ears and 1 mouth—use them accordingly!!

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club continues to be a very busy and exciting place to be every

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. Our club continues to operate and

with the recent cold weather, many new students have come in out of the cold

to join us. We are enjoying many delightful breakfasts: burritos, tacos, macaroni

and cheese, grilled cheese, and French toast with fresh strawberries.

We say a special thank you to Longos for the donation of an $800 gift card. This

will provide many delicious and nutritious meals for our students.

Our club is also grateful for the support of Breakfast for Learning. It is with the

partnership of many wonderful organizations that we are able to continue to

run our breakfast. Our club continues to search for a new director for

next year. If you or someone you know is interested in continuing

this excellent tradition at Beatty, please call the office.

Stronger together,

Beth Chisholm,

Director
