Claimed for just $16,000 back in 2017, Starship Jubilee won

her first Grade I in last year=s GI E.P. Taylor S. and was second

next out in the GIII Cardinal S. over a yielding course at Churchill

Downs in November. She opened her 2020 account with four

straight victories: the Sunshine Millions F/M Turf Jan. 18, the

GIII Suwannee River S. Feb. 8, the GII Hillsborough S. Mar. 7 and

the GII Ballston Spa S. July 25. The FL-bred entered off a fourth

in the GI Diana S. at Saratoga Aug. 23.

Pedigree Notes:

Canada=s reigning Horse of the Year, Starship Jubilee is one of

eight winners from as many to race from her dam, a daughter of

Grade I winner Perfect Arc. Third dam Podeica was victorious in

the G1 Polla de Potrancas in her native Argentina. Also the dam

of the MSP Starship Nala, Perfectly Wild is represented by the

3-year-old Allegedly Perfect (Kantharos), who captured a grass

allowance two back at Gulfstream in June. Perfectly Wild was

bred to Malibu Moon in each of the last two seasons.

MAGIC ATTITUDE RUNS TO THE MONEY IN

BELMONT OAKS Magic Attitude (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) made her Stateside debut

in style with a late-surging victory as the heavy favorite in the

GI Belmont Oaks Saturday, the first Grade I event of the track=s

fall meet. Caboosing the quintet early, the even-money favorite-

-who was receiving Lasix for the first time--bided her time at the

back as second-choice Antoinette (Hard Spun) clocked a half-

mile in :49.99. Still last entering the far turn, the bay swung out

three wide in the lane and unleashed a furious rally, powering

clear late for a decisive victory. Saratoga Oaks victress

Antoinette held second.

"The pace was a little bit of a concern,@ said winning trainer

Arnaud Delacour. AWith a five-horse field, you never know

what's going to happen, but it didn't change her running style as

that's how she likes to race. Javier [Castellano] timed it perfectly

and she came with a good kick.@

On a potential start in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf

Nov. 7: "We'll see. One race at a time. The [GI] Queen Elizabeth

[II Challenge Cup] [Oct. 10 at Keeneland] is in 21 days and might

be coming back too quick. We'll let her tell us."

Magic Attitude | Coglianese

"I really like the way she did it,@ jockey Javier Castellano said.

AWatching the replays, it seemed like she could be a little bit

keen. She always seemed to break well out of the gate and get

good forward position in Europe. Today, she broke OK. I tried to

cover up a little bit. It was her first time in the country and a

mile and a quarter and you always have to save something for

the end. She sat beautifully behind the speed. She had a nice

rhythm. When I asked her turning for home at the quarter pole,

she just took off really well. I was very excited to see the way

she did it today."

Graduating at second asking in France for Haras Du Saubouas

and trainer Fabrice Chappet, Magic Attitude checked in third in

the Criterium de Lyon 15 days later. Victorious in the G3 Prix

Vanteaux in May, she was privately purchased by Roy and

Gretchen Jackson=s Lael Stables and was second in her first start

for them in the G1 Prix Saint Alary June 14. The chestnut was

fifth in her final European start in the G1 Prix de Diane July 5 for

trainer Fabrice Chappet and was transferred to Delacour.

Pedigree Notes:

Magic Attitude is the 89th top-level scorer for the mighty

Galileo and is bred on the same Galileo/Exceed and Excel cross

as Group 1 winner Anthony Van Dyck. She is also one of 327

black-type winners and 221 graded winners for that Coolmore

stalwart. Her dam, English Highweight and Group 1 winner

Margot Did, is also the dam of GSW & MG1SP Mission

Impassible (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Her recent produce includes the

juvenile colt Pietrasanta (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}), who brought

-210,000,000--the equivalent of $1,936,200--at the JRHA

Yearling and Foal Sale; and a yearling colt by Heart=s Cry (Jpn).

Count Again proved he should not be counted out with a

rallying score in the Singspiel at odds of 9-1. Racing in mid-pack,

the bay sat patiently back off the pace through a first half-mile in

:49.91. Dropping back to second last on the backstretch, he was

way out in the center of the track in early stretch and close

resolutely to secure the victory. Sir Sahib got up for second by a

neck over the winner=s stablemate and fellow Sam-Son

homebred.

Count Again earned his diploma at second asking when

switched to the turf at Keeneland Oct. 9 for trainer Neil Howard.

Transferred to Kent Sweezey, he won a grassy allowance at

Tampa Apr. 3 and was moved once again to Gail Cox. Third in a

local optional claimer June 20, the gelding missed by a neck to

the re-opposing Woodbridge (Langfuhr) over course and

distance Aug. 29.

Pedigree Notes:

Count Again is the 69th black-type winner and 38th graded

winner by the recently pensioned Awesome Again. His stakes-

winning and MGSP dam Count to Three is a daughter of Grade I

winner Countus In (Dancing Court). Also the dam of MGISW

Ransom the Moon (Malibu Moon), she more recently produced

the juvenile colt Count to Four (Dynamic Sky), a yearling filly by

Pioneerof the Nile and a 2020 filly by Malibu Moon.

the Soaring Free S. going 6 1/2 panels on the local lawn next out

saddles D J Stable=s $800,000 OBSAPR purchase Dolder Grand

Download (Society=s Chairman) in a seven-panel turf test over

this course Aug. 23.

A pair of first-out winners take a big step up in class here in

American Monarch (American Pharoah) and Heat of the Night

(Summer Front). Trained by Bill Mott, the former rallied to

victory in a two-turn turf event at Saratoga Aug. 8, overtaking

the Chad Brown-trained Secret Potion (Into Mischief) late. Tim

Unified | Lane=s End

KEESEP cont. from p1

In the two-session 2019 Book 3 section, 523 yearlings grossed

$56,761,500 for an average of $108,531 and a median of

$80,000. Five horses sold for $500,000 or over.

AIf you have the physical and the vetting and the sire, there is

plenty of money here,@ said Zach Madden of Buckland Sales.

ABut if you have one little bit of criteria that you don=t meet

what the market perceives as being optimal, it=s really, really

sticky. You have to be realistic on reserves and you can=t get too

carried away on anything.@

While the auction market has been polarized for several years

now, Madden thinks the global pandemic and uncertainty in the

economy has widened the gap.

AI think the polarization is definitely accentuated because I just

of how cumbersome COVID has made everything--the economy

and the whole way people live. Today was a little bit of up and

down, but at the end of the day, I still feel like end users are

here and I feel like their may be more people in town with the

shifts in books. I am still hopeful. We ended up having a pretty

good day and my neighbors back at the barn seem to not be

dragging their heads too much. Fingers crossed it continues.@

Bloodstock agent Deuce Greathouse signed for six yearlings

during Saturday=s session.

AEverybody is getting more selective,@ Greathouse said. AYou

hear the sellers say the middle market is weak and all the buyers

say everything they follow up there to buy is hard to buy. I think

the ones you like are maybe a hair more reasonable this year. It

seems like we=ve got some stuff done, it=s been difficult, but

we=ve got some stuff done.@

The Keeneland September sale continues through Friday with

sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Unified Colt Scores for Greathouse Trainer Bob Baffert and bloodstock agent Donato Lannicontinued to pluck the top colts from the back show ringSaturday at Keeneland, going to $450,000 to acquire a colt fromthe first crop of multiple graded stakes winner Unified (CandyRide {Arg}) from the Four Star Sales consignment. AI like what I=ve seen by Unified,@ Lanni said after signing theticket on hip hip 1769 in the name of Baffert=s AThree Amigos@clients, Mike Pegram, Paul Weitman, and Karl Watson. AThis coltstood out in Book 3. There is still money here for good horses,so we paid more money than we thought. But everybody is hereand the good ones cost money.@ The bay colt is out of Fay Na Na (Majestic Warrior), a half-sister to graded placed The Truth and K G (Successful Appeal). He was bred by John Greathouse=s Greathouse Equine and hisfamily=s Glencrest Farm. AEverything about him is special: his demeanor, the way helooks and the way he walks, his mind,@ Greathouse said. AHe=sdone everything right since he got here. He showed non-stopand has not slowed down or turned a hair. He=s been anabsolute champion.@ The Greathouse family=s association with Fay Na Na tracesback to the 2012 Keeneland September sale, where she waspurchased by David Greathouse and his son Deuce for $90,000.The mare never raced and sold for $1,200 at the 2014Keeneland November sale. AMy uncle and cousin actually bought the mare as a yearlingand I bought her privately off a friend a little bit later on,@Greathouse said. AShe=s been nothing but good to me. She=slived on the farm, my wife and I foaled this colt out. And herewe are. This is really special.@ Cont. p12

Among those celebrating the outstanding result was the senior

John Greathouse, who said he came out to the sale Saturday

after his son told him he was expecting big things from the

yearling. But, given the uncertain market conditions, the

younger Greathouse admitted the colt had exceeded

expectations.

ATo say I expected that for him would be ridiculous,@ he said. AI

am thrilled. I am thrilled he=s going to good hands and I am

grateful to all the people who liked him.@

Fay Na Na produced a colt by Violence this year.

Maverick Strikes for Violence Colt WinStar Farm=s Elliott Walden, bidding from the back row of

the sales pavilion, went to $410,000 to acquire a colt by

Violence for the farm=s Maverick Racing division to lead early

returns at Saturday=s sixth session of the Keeneland September

sale.

AHe=s a beautiful colt,@ Walden said after signing the ticket on

hip 1694. AHe was our favorite horse of the day.@

Violence is having a standout year and added a third 2020

Grade I winner to his resume with recent GI Del Mar Futurity

winner Dr. Schivel.

AWouldn=t be buying him last year, but you=ve got to look at

them this year,@ Walden said of the stallion.

As the September sale marched into its second week, Walden

said, AThere are some really good physicals still coming and I=m

encouraged with what is in Books 3 and 4.@

Hip 1694, consigned by Hidden Brook, is out of stakes-placed

Brinkley (City Zip), a half-sister to graded stakes winner Bound

for Nowhere (The Factor). The yearling=s third dam produced

sprint champion Midnight Lute. He was bred by Douglas

Scharbauer, who purchased Brinkley for $170,000 at the 2016

Keeneland November sale.

Dobson Over the Moon Everett Dobson, whose Candy Meadows Sales sold a $775,000

Quality Road colt earlier in the sale, went to $400,000 to acquire

a filly by Malibu Moon (hip 1934) from the Warrendale Sales

consignment Saturday at Keeneland.

AEverything,@ Dobson said with a laugh when asked what he

liked about the yearling. AShe is just the type that will ultimately

hopefully come home to join the broodmare band and make

really nice babies. That=s the plan anyway.@

The chestnut filly is out of Rosy Humor (Distorted Humor) and

is a full-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Stanford and a

half to multiple graded placed Hedge Fund (Super Saver). She

was bred by Ron Stolich, who purchased the mare in foal to Orb

for $225,000 at the 2017 Keeneland November sale.

Dobson said he is seeing new faces on the grounds as the

September sales heads into Book 4.

AThere are a fair number of people here today,@ he said.

AThere looks like there is some new money in the house, which

is always encouraging in Book 3. You want the new players to

come in and it looks like that=s the case. Hopefully it will

continue for the next week or so.@

More Candy for The Avengers

The partnership of SF/Starlight/Madaket, nicknamed The

Avengers by trainer Bob Baffert, added a third colt by Twirling

Candy to its haul at Keeneland September when SF=s Tom Ryan

bid $385,000 to acquire hip 1878 from the Bluegrass

Thoroughbred Services consignment Saturday.

AHe is a lovely colt,@ Ryan said. AHe could have been in Book 2.

He=s a beautiful physical and he=s by a very good stallion. We are

excited about this horse.@

Ryan added that he was still finding plenty of competition for

the top lots as the Keeneland sale reached its one-week mark.

AI thought that was a strong price for that horse, but he=s a

beautiful colt and we are big fans of Twirling Candy,@ he said.

The partnership=s other sons of Twirling Candy purchased this

week at Keeneland were hip 1878, also purchased for $385,000,

and hip 1175, acquired for $130,000.

The yearling, bred by Jeffrey Amling and Merriefield Farm, is

out of My Own Story. Campaigned by Diane Perkins=s Wimborne

Farm, she is the dam of graded stakes winner Real Story (Fast

Bullet) and stakes winner My Afleet (Afleet Alex).

AWe had 11 scopes on the horse, so we knew he was really

popular, but you never know what they are going to bring. We

didn=t think he=d bring that much,@ admitted John Stuart of

Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services. AYou never know until you

lead them in there.@

Of the yearling=s placement in Book 3, Stuart added, AHe could

have been a Book 2, but I=ve taken several out of that mare to

the sales before and I=ve never been able to sell one. But now

that she=s had two really good horses, it makes a difference. I

bought that mare off Mrs. Perkins for about $60,000 off the

racetrack. Boy, what a good producer she=s been.@

KARAMANOS, GONZALEZ, AND BONE TAKE LAUREL

SUMMER MEET TITLES The summer meet at Laurel Park wrapped up Saturday with

jockey Horacio Karamanos just holding his lead over Jevian

Toledo to win the riding title in spite of failing to reach the

winner=s circle Saturday while Toledo won twice. Karamanos

won 42-41 over Toledo. He ranked second in purse earnings

with more than $1.35 million, while Toledo tallied $1.52 million.

AI kept finishing second today,@ said Karamanos. AI couldn=t

win. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don=t have the luck.

That=s what happened to me today. But it=s the game. You need

some luck. I think I had beautiful luck because I didn=t get hurt or

anything like that. To me, when I finish my races in one piece,

it=s my best win, and I think for everybody it=s the same.@

Karamanos has now won six titles in Maryland, including the

Laurel fall meets in 2002 and 2007. The Argentine native won

more than 1,500 races in Argentina before moving his tack to

the U.S. in 2000.

Trainer Claudio Gonzalez was Laurel=s leading trainer for the

summer meet with 27 wins. He earned his 13th career title and

10th in the last 11 meets in Maryland. Damon Dilodovico trailed

in second with 16 wins.

Robert D. Bone, one of Gonzalez=s main clients, was the meet=s

leading owner with 14 wins.

Live racing in Maryland will now move to Baltimore for the

Preakness Meet at Pimlico, which is scheduled for Sept. 24-28

and Oct. 1-3. The 145th running of the GI Preakness S. will be

held Oct. 3.

from rail-skimming favorite Amsden (American Pharoah), the

Ontario-bred gray colt was guided to the grandstand side and

rolled over the top of his rivals en route to a comfortable

victory.

The 204th stakes winner for his wildly successful dual-

One of the first to break the line, the $8,000 Keeneland

Ten of the eleven 2-year-old fillies sent to post in the Louisiana

Cup Juvenile Fillies S. were looking for their first black-type win,

but it was Mirabeau, already winner of the Aug. 29 D. S. Shine

Young Futurity at Evangeline Downs, who came home the

victress. After a closing third in her debut June 19, Mirabeau

made it four straight by a combined 21 lengths with the

Louisiana Cup win as she took her show on the road for the first

time from Evangeline to Louisiana Downs.

Wide on the outside while in touch with the leaders, Mirabeau

stayed in the clear and moved up to second by the time the half

passed in :46.88. She collared Rue Lala and sailed right on by

while the whip was out on her rival. Mirabeau powered clear

and kept her mind on business as she cantered home the easiest

of winners.

they hit the quarter pole, she shot through an inviting opening

Alkumait is another talented son of Showcasing

for Sheikh Hamdan and Marcus Tregoning | racingfotos.com

ALKUMAIT BEST INTHE MILL REEF

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s twice-raced

Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) broke through tackling six

furlongs in a July 28 Goodwood maiden and continued his

upward path with a decisive victory returning in Saturday=s

G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. at Newbury. The February-

foaled bay, who had posted a close-up fourth in a July 19 novice

heat over Newbury=s straight six in his only other start, was

3/4-of-a-length too good for King Power Racing=s 475,000gns

Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling Fivethousandtoone (Ire)

(Frankel {GB}), with G1 Prix Morny third Rhythm Master (Ire)

(Dark Angel {Ire}) 2 3/4 lengths further back and best of the rest.

The 8-1 chance was steadied to race within range of the leaders

at the tail of the field after breaking to the fore in this black-type

bow. Making smooth headway once past halfway, he quickened

smartly to launch his bid entering the final furlong and was

pushed out from there to comfortably outpoint 5-2 favourite

Fivethousandttoone for a career high.

AI worked him on some faster ground this week, I could see he

was very good on it and it has been one of those nice upward

curves with him,@ said Marcus Tregoning with renewed focus

following the enforced retirement of stable star Mohaather (GB)

(Showcasing {GB}) last month.

ARMSTRONGS IN LINE FOR PROFITABLE SALEBy Alayna Cullen

There is a general feeling of relief this year that the yearling

sales are taking place at all. While some of the key indices are

down on previous years there is comfort to be found in the

strong clearance rates experienced at the sales thus far and

even more comfort to be taken by some of the results

pinhookers have had from their investments of 2019. For

siblings Chris and Tara Armstrong this year could be one of the

more memorable ones for their young pinhooking operation

from Beechvale Stud.

At the upcoming Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale

they offer two yearling colts. The first is lot 107, a son of

Profitable (Ire) whose first crop has been well received in the

ring. The second is lot 222, who has arguably received one of

the best pedigree updates since catalogue was printed.

Alkumait Best In The Mill Reef cont. from p1

AHe is not jarred, he doesn=t feel the ground and will progress

and go on. I knew we had this one coming through and we just

had to keep him right. He=s stabled right next door to my house

and if he moves, like Mohaather did through the night, it wakes

me up, but it is worth it.@ Looking ahead, the resurgent trainer

added, AThere is a lot of speed on the dam=s side, but if we are

allowed and everybody agrees, we will try to mould him to at

least get seven furlongs and then after that we will see. If you

could get him to drop in and settle, like he did today, there is

every chance he will get a little bit further. I think that is the way

to go. It opens up the game plan a bit and we could always come

back to six furlongs. Sheikh Hamdan may want to put him away

after today, but I=d be keen to run him in Group 1 company

before the end of the season if there is a suitable race.@

Pedigree Notes Alkumait, one of four winners and three black-type performers

out of Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), is kin to Listed Committed S.

victor The Broghie Man (GB) (Cityscape {GB}) and Listed Prix

Herod placegetter Gloves Lynch (GB) (Mukhadram {GB}). He is

also full to a yearling filly and half to a weanling colt by Frankel

(GB). Suelita, a granddaughter of GIII Matchmaker S. winner

Horatia (Ire) (Machiavellian), is a multiple-winning half-sister to

G3 Cornwallis S. runner-up Outer Space (GB) (Acclamation {GB})

and to the dam of last term=s G2 Lowther S. victress Living In The

Past (Fr) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}). Horatia, who produced G3

Pinnacle S. victrix and GI E.P. Taylor S. placegetter Moment In

Time (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}), is a half-sister to dual G2 Lonsdale

Cup scorer Opinion Poll (Ire) (Halling) from the family of G1

Queen Elizabeth II S.-winning sire Markofdistinction (GB)

EPONA PLAYS STRIKES AT GOWRAN

Coming off a third placing in the G3 Snow Fairy Fillies S. at The

proved enough to take Saturday=s G3 Denny Cordell Lavarack &

Lanwades Stud Fillies S. at Gowran Park. Tackling a further 100

yards than last time, the extra distance was ideal as the 9-2 shot

was delivered from mid-division in the straight by Billy Lee to

oust Etneya (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) in the last half-furlong and score

by a neck. There was a five-length margin back to Cerro Bayo

(Ire) (Dansili {GB}) in third and the winning trainer Willie

McCreery is hoping Epona Plays can go further up the ranks.

AI thought she was a decent filly last year and she ran a

cracking race in Leopardstown. It=s taken her a while to get

going, but she loves it here. She=s progressing well and they

went a proper gallop. Billy said she was just behind the bit lovely

all the way and when he asked her she was always going to

respond. He said she did it snugly in the end. I=m delighted for

the owner-breeder Renzo Forni and his daughter Raffaello.

That=s the fourth of that family that has won for me and the

three fillies have all got black-type. She had a little niggle earlier

in the year that we have sorted out and she=s coming on the

whole time. She=s a lovely scopey filly and goes on any ground.@

Pedigree Notes Epona Plays, who had broken her maiden on her sixth start at

this venue on July 25 and finished fourth in the Listed Hurry

Harriet S. over this track and trip on Aug. 12 prior to her Snow

Fairy effort, is out of the unraced New Plays (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire})

whose G3 Athasi S.-winning Dolce Strega (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and

Listed Ruby S. second Bumbasina (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) were

two of the fillies McCreery was referring to. The second dam

Sagamartha (GB) (Rainbow Quest) produced the G2 Doncaster

Cup runner-up Darley Sun (Ire) (Tiger Hill {Ire}) and is kin to the

G2 Lowther S. and G2 Queen Mary S. winner Flashy Wings (GB)

(Zafonic), who also placed three times in Group 1 company. The

dam=s 2-year-old colt by Gleneagles (Ire) unfortunately died, but

she also has a colt foal by Muhaarar (GB).

LAZULI SWOOPS FOR TROPHY SUCCESS Still relatively unexposed as a sprinter, Godolphin=s Lazuli (Ire)

(Dubawi {Ire}) put two defeats behind him when capturing

Saturday=s five-furlong G3 Dubai International Airport World

Trophy at Newbury. Having looked a potential star in this

category when beating the subsequent G1 Flying Five runner-up

Keep Busy (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) by 3 1/2 lengths in

Sandown=s Listed Scurry S. over this trip on June 13, the bay had

run fifth in the July 5 G3 Coral Charge over that course and

distance and fourth in Deauville=s Listed Prix Moonlight Cloud

stretched to six on Aug. 9. Chasing the two pace-setters early

and leading the main group, the 5-2 second favourite stayed on

to lead passing the furlong pole and score by a length from

Tis Marvellous (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) in track-record time.

AWhen he won at Sandown, he bossed the race but won in a

good time and gave me a great feeling,@ jockey William Buick

commented. AHe has shown today that he can fight for it as well,

against older opposition too. He is a very fast horse, who is only

a 3-year-old and is going to get better next year.@ Charlie

Appleby added, AI was delighted with the performance of Lazuli,

who enjoyed the drop back to five furlongs and beat some very

strong older sprinters. The likelihood now is that we will put him

away and take him out to Dubai for the Carnival.@

Pedigree Notes

Lazuli=s dam Floristry (GB) (Fasliyev), who was successful in the

Listed Doncaster S. over six furlongs as a 2-year-old, also has two

other black-type performers headed by the similarly-speedy

Listed Prix Contessina winner Inspiriter (GB) (Invincible Spirit

{Ire}) who is in turn the dam of the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal runner-

Elarqam | racingfotos.com

ELARQAM RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS So close to getting his Group 1 when in his pomp last summer,

Shadwell=s Elarqam (GB) (Frankel {GB}) had fallen out of sorts of

late but clicked back into gear with a game win in Saturday=s

G3 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup at Newbury. Rested since

finishing sixth in the July 25 G2 York S., the 2-1 second favourite

was sent to the front from the outset by Jim Crowley and set an

honest tempo. Briefly headed by Gifts of Gold (Ire) (Invincible

Spirit {Ire}) inside the final three furlongs, the homebred proved

too tough for that rival and for the latecomer Desert Encounter

(Ire) (Halling) who he held by 1 1/2 lengths at the line. AIt was

lovely to see him battle there and he=s a much better horse on

top of the ground,@ Crowley said. AHe got his own way out in

front and he enjoyed it and when the other horse headed him it

helped him and gave him something to aim at. He=s been highly-

tried and has plenty of ability. It=s good to see him back on

track.@

Third and possibly unlucky in the 2019 G1 Juddmonte

International S., Elarqam had flopped when subsequently

seventh in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown last

September but returned from a winter=s break to run the

subsequent G1 Prince of Wales=s S. hero Lord North (Ire)

(Dubawi {Ire}) to a short head in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. also

over a mile and a quarter at Haydock on June 7. Only sixth trying

12 furlongs in the G2 Hardwicke S. at Royal Ascot on June 19,

the bay was favourite for the York S. but folded relatively tamely

so questions were hanging over him ahead of this re-

introduction.

AIf you look at his form last year, you would have said he

should be winning a Group 1 this year and unfortunately it

hasn=t fallen his way,@ trainer Mark Johnston said. AWe were

running out of opportunities and that is why we came here, as

there wasn=t really anywhere else to go. Everything has gone his

way today, so it was good to see.@

Page 45: BEATS THE BOYS CONCLUDES AT KEENELAND by Jessica … · AJust an unbelievable feeling,@ said Kevin Attard. AThis mare doesn't get the respect she deserves. She's a winner of 18 or

TDN EUROPE • PAGE 6 OF 20 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 20 SEPTEMBER 2020

AIt has been a frustrating season. When you look at his run in

the Juddmonte last year, you would have said he showed there

he was well and truly a Group 1 horse,@ he added. AWith a

pedigree like his, you would expect to see him get a Group 1 for

a good stud job. I don=t think it matters where you run him. He is

a bit lazy. If you think back to his best run this year at Haydock,

given another 100 yards he would have got back up. He just gets

a bit idle in front and needs something to aim at. If they sprint at

him too quickly, it doesn=t give him time to respond. I don=t

know what we do now to be honest. I just wanted to get

another win back under his belt, but we are running out of

opportunities.@

Pedigree Notes Elarqam=s dam Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}) still rates as this

stable=s leading performer with five victories at the highest level

including the G1 English and Irish 1000 Guineas and

G1 Coronation S. She has also produced the G3 Sapphire S.-

winning sire Fountain of Youth (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and the

GIII My Charmer H. runner-up Cushion (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), while

the second dam Flirtation (GB) (Pursuit of Love {GB}) is also

responsible for the GIII Hillsborough S. runner-up Federation

(GB) (Motivator {GB}) and the dam of the listed-winning and

group-placed Titi Makfi (GB) (Makfi {GB}).

Also related to the G1 Prix de la Salamandre-winning sire Lord

of Men (GB) (Groom Dancer), Attraction=s unraced 2-year-old

MONSOON MOON A NEW RISING STAR AT

NEWMARKET Saturday=s Close Brothers Motor Finance EBF Stallions Fillies=

Novice S. looked there for the taking for Khalid Abdullah=s

Monsoon Moon (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and the half-sister to last

year=s G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was in

uncompromising mood as she duly earned TDN Rising Star

status over Newmarket=s mile. Always travelling strongly under

Ryan Moore tracking the early pace, the 2-5 favourite who was

third on debut behind TDN Rising Star Love Is You (Ire) (Kingman

{GB}) at Ascot a fortnight previously was still full of running

when sent to the front two out. In total command from there,

the grey was chased to the line by the fellow John Gosden-

trained debutante Haija (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}) but was 3 1/4-lengths

too strong there as she in turned pulled seven lengths clear of

Naflah (Fr) (Territories {Ire}). The latter had been four lengths

adrift of Monsoon Moon at Ascot, putting a clear marker on the

race in which Godolphin=s newcomer Sayyida (GB) (Dubawi

{Ire}), the half-sister to Masar (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}), blew

the start and finished last.

Gosden is understandably in no rush with the winner.

AMonsoon Moon is a nice filly. She=s a big filly and she still needs

to mature physically and mentally,@ he said. AI don=t think we

want to be launching into anything next and maybe she=ll have

Armstrongs In Line For Profitable Sale cont. from p1

He is by Mehmas (Ire), who is currently leading first-season

sire, and his half-sister is none other than recent G1 Matron S.

winner Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}). This success for

Champers Elysees was not the first update she had given her

little brother, as prior to her Group 1 success she had also

progressed from a listed win to Group 3 glory in the Fairy Bridge

S.

Could anyone have foreseen this progression? Well maybe the

Armstrongs could. "I remember last year seeing Champers

Elysees in the parade ring at Naas before the Birdcatcher

Handicap," Chris recalls. "She was a big, rangy filly, and I thought

whatever she does in 2019 would be a bonus, and, thankfully,

she's gone on this year. I was actually at Galway the night she

won the listed race. It was nice to see her win it. Then she went

up 16 pounds to a mark of 110, which is a fair bit, even though

she was impressive, but, thankfully, she was able to justify her

mark and she won the Fairy Bridge well."

Before the Matron, Armstrong says he was just hopeful she

would run a credible race--"at least if she was even third or

fourth that would be respectable"--but the filly duly came with a

late run and provided the Armstrongs with not just a boost for

their yearling but also a nice birthday present for Chris.

Cast back to the foal sales of 2019, and Chris recalls what he

liked about the colt sibling that cost i19,000. "He caught the

eye, he was well done by his breeder, Carl Brown,@ Armstrong

says. AHe walked well and was a nice, big colt. We thought

Mehmas had a very good chance of being leading first-season

sire this year, too."

The colt has taken his preparation well for his intended return

to the sale ring.

"We've been very happy with him. He's developed a lot," says

Armstrong. "He is correct, walks well, has good muscle and we

think he has a nice bit of quality about him; hopefully he'll shine in

the sale over in Newmarket."

As Armstrong points out, the Tattersalls Ireland September

Yearling Sale now takes place at Park Paddocks in Newmarket,

England, a point Armstrong says he believes may be of further

advantage to this particular colt.

"I think it may actually benefit us more,@ he says. AMehmas is on

fire. He had the winner in the Weatherbys Racing Bank 2yo Stakes

race at Doncaster and if I'm right, I think 95% of his winners this

year have been in England. He might be more appealing to the

English market. Mehmas has got a lot of winners, he's got quality

winners, and they seem to be adaptable over any ground and

over five, six and seven furlongs."

While it could be easy to get a little star struck by the above

colt, the Armstrongs have another offering as part of their

Beechvale Stud consignment and although the colt doesn't boast

a Group 1 update he has merits that could also see a good return.

"We literally just saw him before he went into the ring last year

and we actually didn't bid on him in the ring." Armstrong recalls.

"He wasn't sold so we got him vetted outside the ring afterwards

and we bought him. He's a very well-proportioned colt, he stands

well over the ground. He's done very well throughout the prep

and Profitable seems popular at the moment. He's got a very

good temperament too; we walk him around the roads at home

on a Sunday for something different and he is absolutely

bomb-proof. He eats, sleeps, works and he's thrived throughout

the prep."

Chris and Tara have only been pinhooking since 2015 and

combine the task of raising weanlings to sales-ready yearlings

with their full time positions for Aidan and Joseph O'Brien,

respectively. When it comes to picking four-legged investments

the brother and sister team are very much on the same page. "I

suppose when you're only buying four or five each year, both

myself and Tara have to be sure we are happy with what we are

buying,@ Armstrong says. AYou've got to be happy with them

because you look at them for the rest of the year.

The pair have already enjoyed a sale topper when their Night of

Thunder (Ire) colt, bought for i15,000 as foal, led day two of the

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 3 last year when selling for

75,000gns, and a repeat of that experience may not be that far

off.

HARD ROAD AFTER BREXIT CAN STILL BE

EASED by Chris McGrath

There is a species of fish called the Atlantic Horse Mackerel.

Maybe we could generate due political attention and energy if

we started racing them, instead of Thoroughbreds. As it is, the

relative economic footprints of the fishing industry and equine

sport appear wholly immaterial when it comes to the emotional

imperatives of Brexit.

Across the political spectrum, and across the world, we have

become bleakly accustomed to the increasing puerility of

political discourse. Complex policy dilemmas are contorted into

their most provocative form, with the shallow volatilities of

social media cynically harnessed to ideological agendas.

Fishing has become a notoriously literal adaptation of the

insularity that coarsened so much of the Brexit debate. And now

that the debate has moved on, to what happens next, the same

gusts of childish territorialism are enabling hijackers and pirates-

-the political captains addicted to gesture and bravado, rather

than the diligent and patient business of sealing leaks or

repairing torn sails and nets--to drive us all towards the rocks of

no deal.

Brexit has thrown European horse travel

regulations into uncertainty | Getty Images

This is not the place to highlight the hazards that actually

loom, as a result, for British trawlers (which export the majority

of their catch). But what our own industry does need to

understand is how governments are meanwhile setting adrift

the ferries transporting our horseboxes from December.

How many of us are truly aware of the consequence of a hard

Brexit, followed next spring by the 2021 E.U. Animal Health

Law? Certainly I had no real sense of the catastrophic

impracticalities ahead until the publication, this week, of a

dossier compiled by a Task Force representing a variety of

international industry

federations.

They have been convening

weekly since May. One of the

most elementary premises of

their analysis was to compute,

for the first time, the collective

economic value of racing,

breeding and equestrianism in

Europe. At i52.1 billion per

annum, with a payroll of

210,000 direct jobs and over

500,000 overall, it far exceeds

the fishing industry.

Apparently, however, that is

not enough for the British, Irish

and French governments to

prioritise a replacement for the

tripartite agreement that has long facilitated the free movement

of elite horses. Evolved over 50 years, that exemplary

agreement both verified and streamlined the health status of

horses, applying international codes of practice for the control

of equine diseases, including such virulent conditions as CEM,

EVA and EIA.

Absolutely fundamental as these precautions are, the three

relevant governments have apparently manifested a staggering

fatalism about the agreement lapsing with Brexit. As things

stand, the routine but priceless traffic of Thoroughbreds--traffic

predicated, whether for competition or breeding or sale, on

certification of the highest status of health and welfare--is going

to be drastically affected.

If no trade deal is agreed, Britain will in December assume

default "third country" standards for trade. That will entail

isolation and residence requirements, disease testing, export

health certification, and E.U. entry through designated Border

Inspection Posts. Next April, however, still more stringent

restrictions will be enforced by the E.U. Animal Health Law. You

could certainly forget the "walk-in" mare crossing between the

U.K. or Ireland to visit a stallion.

Already from December we can look forward to horseboxes

joining queues of freight held up at ports and frontiers.

Moreover the construction of Border Inspection Posts, hitherto

unnecessary for the movement of horses, has been suspended

in response to the latest Wild West exhibitionism from those

directing the British negotiating strategy.

And, by the way, you can see the Machiavellian calculations

behind legislation that deliberately flouts international law.

Having flushed out nearly all the parliamentarians of

old-fashioned principle and honour from the party of

government, those holding the

tiller now just need the House

of Lords to make a stand

instead. Then, perhaps, we will

again hear the disingenuous,

incendiary hue-and-cry about

"elitist" obstruction of the

popular will.

Even if such inspection points

were ready for use, however,

no layman could begin to grasp

the terrifying risk to

highly-strung mares with foals

at foot; or a yearling on its way

to a sale where it might be

valued in millions; or a

champion travelling for a race

dependent for its Group 1

status on international competition.

More than half the horses sold at the principal Tattersalls sales,

remember, have either arrived from an E.U. nation or will be

sold to one. And of the Thoroughbreds sold by Irish vendors, at

an estimated annual value of i438 million, 76% were exported

to Britain in 2019.

Nor are the problems confined to traffic in and out of Britain,

which also serves as landbridge for thousands of horses annually

travelling between Ireland and France, and all points of the

European continent beyond. The unusually dynamic working life

of the racehorse can be measured by 20,892 cross-border

movements, temporary or permanent, recorded between

France, Ireland and Britain in 2017.

Then there are the tariffs likely to arise from the UK's new

status as a "third country"; and VAT differences between the UK

and E.U. But the real runaway train, hurtling down the tracks, is

the E.U.'s new Animal Health legislation, which stipulates

residency requirements prior to travel.

Think of the nightmares created for sales consignors and

auction houses, if you have to accommodate all stock on site for

the critical 30 days leading up to its appearance in the ring.

Page 51: BEATS THE BOYS CONCLUDES AT KEENELAND by Jessica … · AJust an unbelievable feeling,@ said Kevin Attard. AThis mare doesn't get the respect she deserves. She's a winner of 18 or

Conversely, a maximum residency of just 90 days is ordained

for mares visiting stallions. Ninety days! For a pregnant mare to

arrive safely in advance of her due date; to deliver her foal; to

return to a coverable oestrus, and potentially require repeat

covers; and to be verified as in foal after a reliable interval.

The Task Force wants to spread awareness of these appalling

challenges. But it also wants to meet them. Perhaps the most

instructive utterance of the whole Brexit saga was that Britain

"has had enough of experts." But the assiduous example of

these far-sighted and public-spirited horsemen could be usefully

borrowed by those too busy brandishing flags or sabres to

devote themselves to actually recognising and solving problems.

As things stand, unfortunately, the solution proposed by the

Task Force has yet to be embraced by governments and

regulatory authorities. That solution, self-driven and self-funded

by the industry, already exists: the digital passport. The Task

Force dossier elaborates its real-time efficiency and reliability in

terms of integrity, biosecurity, traceability and welfare. Told that

the paper passport system must continue, its authors have

suggested a compromise. (Quaint notion! Can they please take

over the broader negotiations, once their work is done?) They

now urge a dual system, in which paper and electronic passports

can operate in tandem.

It is not too late; not quite yet. The calamitous hobbling of

international equine traffic is still preventable. A comprehensive

Free Trade Agreement would maintain uninhibited movement

of both "high health" horses and temporary movements of their

essential, skilled companions, from grooms to veterinarians to

jockeys. But every restriction on that fluid ecosystem will cause

grave economic damage to an industry that already operates on

precarious margins. The Task Force is not looking to cause panic.

But it does need us all to heed its warnings, and assist its

lobbying. Because time is running out. And if you think all this is

too difficult, wait until you have to put a saddle on a fish.

CHURCHILL FILLY LEADS SGA YEARLING SALE Italy=s Societa Gestione Aste held its one-day yearling sale in

Milan Saturday, with two fillies bringing six figures. A total of

147 youngsters were catalogued with 130 offered after outs,

and 84 sold for a clearance rate of 64.6% and an aggregate of

i1,651,000. The average was i19,655, and the median

i11,000. Predictably given the economic climate, figures took a

hit from 2019 when 83 yearlings grossed i2,423,000.

The average and median had both experienced huge jumps

last year to i29,193 and i18,000, respectively.

A first-crop daughter of Churchill (Ire) led the way at

i120,000. Lot 74 was offered by Razza del Velino and

purchased by Alfalasi Mohamed Saeed Ali. She is a half to a pair

of local stakes winners in Sweet Gentle Kiss (Ire)

(Henrythenavigator) and Sunset Key (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}), and

the dam herself was third in the G3 Italian 1000 Guineas.

Churchill=s Coolmore barnmate Australia (GB) has been

experiencing a purple patch as of late, including a new Group 3

winner in Epona Plays (Ire) at Gowran Park on Saturday, and

leading local owners Scuderia Incolinx paid i100,000 for a filly

by the son of Galileo (lot 14) early in the sale. She is likewise a

half to two stakes winners: the G3 Premio Elena e Sergio Cumani

scorer Candy Store (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Group 3

winner The Conqueror (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}) and out of the

listed-placed March Madness (GB) (Noverre). Lot 14 was also

offered by Razza Del Velino.

The highest-priced colt of the sale was Allevamento Le.Gi.=s

Kodiac (GB) half-brother to this year=s G3 Premio Parioli (Italian

2000 Guineas) winner Cima Emergency (Ire) (Canford Cliffs {Ire})

lot 89. He was bought by Andrea Marcialis for i90,000. Another

young Coolmore sire to feature was No Nay Never; he had a

half-brother to listed winner Clockwinder (Ire) (Intikhab) (lot 59)

sell to trainer Alduino Botti for i77,000.

ENABLE AHAPPY AND WELL@ IN ARC PREP Newmarket=s Henry Cecil Open Weekend could not take place

in its traditional format this year, but a wide array of HQ trainers

nonetheless participated in virtual format.

John Gosden was chief among them, and he gave an update

on the town=s most popular equine resident, Enable (GB)

(Nathaniel {Ire}), as she gears up for an attempt at a third win in

the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 4.

AEnable is very happy and well,@ Gosden said. AShe has been

fine since the race at Kempton [the Sept. 5 G3 September S).

She enjoyed that outing. It=s a massive task [the Arc], a big

mountain to climb again. If it had gone quite right last year, she

obviously wouldn=t be trying to do it this year.

AIt looks a fantastic race; Aidan O=Brien is fielding a wonderful

filly in Love, who naturally being a 3-year-old gets all the weight,

which Enable benefited from when she won as a 3-year-old, and

there are some great older horses. It is very exciting--she is in

great form to attempt the impossible. Frankie [Dettori] will

hopefully be here next week to ride her in some work and help

bring her up to the race.@

Enable will meet her illustrious staying stablemate Stradivarius

(Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) for the first time on a racecourse in the

Arc. Stradivarius shortened up to 2400 metres when second in

the G2 Prix Foy on Sept. 13.

AIn the Prix Foy, Mickael Barzalona was riding [winner]

Anthony Van Dyck and he went nice gentle fractions,@ Gosden

said. AIn the French trials they do not like to overdo them, they

come into the straight and then kick. I thought for a

two-and-a-half-mile Ascot Gold Cup winner he showed great

acceleration down the straight. The other horses behind never

got to them. I thought both horses ran lovely races and he came

up a neck short. I could not have been happier with him.@

Two of Gosden=s Group 1-winning 3-year-olds, Palace Pier

(GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Mishriff (GB) (Make Believe {GB}),

have dates on British Champions Day, in the G1 Queen Elizabeth

II S. and G1 Qipco Champion S. respectively.

AWe are very much looking at the QEII with Palace Pier,@

Gosden said. AWe were very happy with the [G1] Jacques le

Marois--we wanted that straight mile for him. They did have an

excessive amount of rain, so it was very soft, but he handled it

well. There is a strong possibility that he stays in training as a

4-year-old, in which case it will probably be his last run of the

season as we are getting deep into October. I didn=t really want

to be whizzing him off to Hong Kong or America at this stage,

maybe we will do that sort of thing next year. Hopefully he runs

a big race in the QEII, and we will be waiting to run him again as

a 4-year-old.@

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS

Of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club victor Mishriff, Gosden added,

AWe thought about the Arc. We looked at the pedigree and to

me, he is not fully furnished and strengthened yet. He is still

improving and the Arc at this stage of his career could do more

harm than good. We decided we will stay at a mile and a quarter

and he will be going to the Champion S. I=d expect him to put up

a pretty big show.@

Gosden said the G3 Cumberland Lodge S. could be on the

agenda for last year=s G1 St Leger winner Logician (GB) (Frankel

{GB}) following his recent winning return off an extended layoff

due to peritonitis.

JOEL DATE FOR BENBATL

Benbatl (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) will make his belated return to

action in Friday=s G2 Joel S. at Newmarket. The 6-year-old won a

pair of Group 2s at Meydan over the winter but hasn=t been

seen since finishing third in the Saudi Cup. He was scratched

from the G2 Celebration Mile on Aug. 29 after the ground went

soft. AHe=ll go for the Joel, he=s working well and he=s in good

form. We=ve been waiting for a while to run him,@ said trainer

Saeed bin Suroor. AWe wanted to go to Goodwood and then

there was a race at Haydock, but the ground was heavy. Instead

we=ll go to Newmarket for the race he won last year--he won it

well. We=re looking forward to it and looking to see a good

performance from him. The timing is also right for Champions

Day, but he will only go there if the ground is suitable. We took

him last year when it was soft and he didn=t like it. He=s got the

option over a mile [the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S.] and 10 furlongs

[the G1 Champion S.]. We=ll wait and see, we just need to get

him started.@

Looking ring-rusty after his summer break, Addeybb gave

supporters a scare before ultimately stamping his class on this

prep for the G1 Champion S. Entitled to need the experience

having been off the track since finishing runner-up in the

G1 Prince of Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot on June 17, the bay

tracked the early leader and was short of room in the straight

when Tom Marquand was winding up in behind. Eventually

hitting top stride, the Mar. 21 G1 Ranvet S. and Apr. 11

G1 Queen Elizabeth S. hero powered to the front a furlong from

home and was beyond recall as last year=s G1 Queen Anne S.

hero Lord Glitters closed.

AI don=t think he quite realised he was back at the races until

the two pole. He was a dual Group 1 winner giving weight to

some good horses and he=s done it as well as we could have

expected,@ Marquand said. AHe only turns it on when he has to

hence he can go to the other side of the world and not waste a

button of energy until the big day. Hopefully this leads him well

into Champions Day and all goes well there.@ Maureen Haggas

added, AHe=s a wonderful horse who just seems to get better

and better. I thought he would be a good second or third today,

as the ground was too quick for him--he=s at his best on really

slow ground. He did it really well and keeps surprising us.@

into 7-2 as the market-leader for this similarly prestigious QTS

BEHEMOTH STRIKESANOTHER BLOW

by Paul Vettise

Towering sprinter Behemoth (All Too Hard) delivered another

performance to match his impressive stature when he again

outmuscled a Group 1 line-up to power away with the Sir Rupert

Clarke S. at Caulfield.

There was never going to be any David slaying the Goliath

from South Australia ending to this story and Behemoth was

simply too big and far too strong at Caulfield.

The David Jolly-trained giant is now unbeaten this campaign

after successfully resuming in the G3 Spring S. at Morphettville

and then claiming the G1 Memsie S. in dominant fashion at

Caulfield and his return was just as emphatic.

Behemoth settled in the second division of the field and once

rider Craig Williams, sporting the silks of Grand Syndicates,

worked him into the clear in the straight he came with long

strides to post the seventh victory of his 17-start career.

AFull credit to David Jolly and his team and Sam Lyons and

Grand Syndicates who have all been so patient and now they are

getting the results with this big fellow, who is so well named,@

Williams said.

AHe=s an awesome horse and makes my job so easy. I spoke to

David and Sam this morning and they were full of confidence.

His performance was excellent and we got a nice run and when

he got clear running he really did launch late so credit to him.@

Behemoth=s late surge took him obe-length clear the post of

Tony and Calvin McEvoy=s Dollar For Dollar (High Chaparral

{Ire}), who made all the play in front, and he boxed on strongly

to finish second ahead of his half-sister and stablemate Pretty

Brazen (Brazen Beau). The Lindsey Smith-prepared longshots

Achernar Star (Gingerbread Man) and Reykjavik (Artie Schiller

{USA}) were next to cross the line ahead of the 3-year-old

Tagaloa (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}), who fought on strongly to be less

than two lengths off the winner. It was Williams=s sixth win in

the race which took his Group 1- winning tally to six lengths.

AIt=s been a good race to me and a great race for my family, my

Dad won it as a jockey and trainer and I=d like to thank all my

team for all their support,@ Williams said.

AI also want to thank all the people out there supporting racing

through this pandemic. It=s been challenging times, especially in

Victoria, and we=re still able to showcase these great

thoroughbred athletes in a safe way.@

Topweight No Issue Behemoth was saddled with topweight and gave weight and a

beating to all-comers, but Williams was far from surprised with

the performance.

AYes, he carried 60kg and the minimum in this race was 54kg

so he had to do it really hard, but he was the best horse in the

race and he warranted that weight,@ he said.

AHe=s doing a really good job and I=m just lucky to get to jump

on him in race day. All the credit goes the people that are

spending all the time to develop this big, raw talent.@

WALLER RIDES CREST OF A WAVE

by TDN AusNZ

Chris Waller had all the aces to play in the G1 George Main S.

feature.

Kolding (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) returned to the winner=s stall

for the first time since winning the $7.5 million Golden Eagle

with an upset victory here.

The 5-year-old gelding settled in second outside Dreamforce

his stablemates to score by 0.4 lengths.

Waller landed the first four in the seven runner field as Star Of

The Seas (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) flashed home to finish second,

with Imaging (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) a further 0.2l away in

third and Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) came home in fourth.

BARY AND RIDDELL TURN BACK CLOCKby TDN AusNZ

The old firm of trainer John Bary and jockey Jonathan Riddell

reunited at Hastings to deliver a knockout blow with Callsign

Mav (NZ) (Atlante), upsetting all pre-race predictions with a

boilover win in the G1 Tarzino Trophy. Callsign Mav stunned

punters when he capitalised on an economical run to land a

winning blow at 85 to one. The 4-year-old camped in behind the

leaders and when the field fanned out in the straight he was

through in a flash and hit the line full of running. A fresh Supera

(NZ) (Savabeel) powered home from well back to finish second

ahead of the favourite Avantage (Fastnet Rock), who looked to

have her chance, and Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire})

made a pleasing return for fourth.

Pedigree Notes: Callsign Mav was bred by Windsor Park Stud and sold at New

Zealand Bloodstock=s National Yearling Sale for NZ$3000. He is a

son of Raadisi (NZ) (Volksraad {NZ}) and she is a half-sister to the
