Where it all began...
Scope and Sequence
Beanstalk Books is a publishing company that specialses in decodable books. The company was founded by children’s author and co-founder of Junior Learning, Anna Kirschberg. After 10 years of developing phonics based resources and books, Anna has created a trusted brand of decodable books that deliver transformative reading experiences worldwide. Anna has used her expertise in phonics based instruction and has set about developing purely decodable reading books around a phonics sequence, for young children and older, struggling readers. Beanstalk Books decodable readers are built on the principles of the science of reading and supports the worldwide movement of evidence based reading instruction.
Letters & Sounds is a phonics-based reading programme designed to teach the letter patterns of the English language, with the aim of helping children become fluent readers by the age of 7. The programme follows a systematic progression, where children are introduced to a core set of letters (s, a, t, p, i, n, m) and are encourage to build words and play with these new sounds.
A decodable reading book is a book that only contains phonetics that a child has already learned. For instance, a child starting out in the earliest stages of reading who has learned the sounds s / a / t / p, would be able to decode words in a book such as at, sat, tap, and pat. Therefore, the decodable book would only contain these words and would not introduce any unfamiliar letters and sounds.
The Letters & Sounds Decodable Readers range are 100% decodable. Our reading programme is designed to help children build on their reading success and feel a sense of accomplishment as they work their way through each decodable story. Each Letters & Sounds series of books follows children week-by-week through the programme providing them text-based context to practice their emerging reading skills. Every story in both the fiction, and non-fiction range of books, has been written with a strictly controlled text.
Each Letters & Sounds series follows children week-by-week through the programme providing them text-based context to practice their emerging ready skills. Children are only exposed to words and text that is decodable (can be sounded out), based on the letter-to-sound correspondences already learned. High frequent or tricky words have been incorporated into the progression where it is deemed appropriate.

Decodable Texts vs Non-Decodable ReadersDecodable readers are different to non-decodable readers. Children will not need to rely on using the context of the story to try to read a word. They will acquire the tools to sound out each part of the words in front of them. All of Beanstalk Books decodable books carry a good story. Both fiction and non-fiction titles enable building comprehension skills, picture-to-text match and enable pre-reading discussion and prediction.
Teaching Tricky WordsIn each title, only the words using the sounds already learned would be used in the book title. There are some exceptions of course, where a high-frequency word that is not easily decodable might be used in a story. These words are called ‘tricky words’, for example: the, is, to, no. Each tricky word is listed on the inside inner cover of the book that they are featured in.
