“Gifts of Many Cultures”, Rabbi Chava

On this Sunday nearest Beltane (half way between the Spring equinox and the Summer sol-stice), which is widely celebrated in Gaelic culture, two days before Cinco de Mayo, and the day of Pesach Sheni (second chance Passover), this is a Sunday particularly suited to honor the many cultures in our congregation and the cultures that enhance our human understand-ing. June - CommUUnion

Communion means "fellowship, mutual participation and sharing".

In our June services, we will explore the idea of communion from a variety of UU points of view. Sunday, June 7th, 10:30am, Childcare and RE at 10:30 “Celebrating Our UUCGT CommUUnity ”, Rabbi Chava On this day we have so much celebrate in our togetherness. We will say "hello" to new members, with a warm and creative welcome, we will wish Linda Martin, our office administrator, farewell AND we will nurture our deep structure with our annual meeting. Sunday, June 14th, 10:30am, Childcare and RE at 10:30 “Being In and Out of Union and Flower Communion”, Rabbi Chava June is sometimes called wedding month. It is a time when we celebrate love. What does it mean to be in and out of love? How do we recognize and honor those who live singly as well as those who live in coupled relationships? How does the tra-dition of the flower communion honor the spectrum of relationships? Sunday, June 21st, 10:30am, Childcare and RE at 10:30 “June 21 - Father's Day Rabbi Chava”, Rabbi Chava On this Father's Day we are seeking men who wish to offer brief reflections on the role, meaning and relationship with fa-thers. Let's go a little deeper than platitudes and explore the relation in its depths. We are seeking two or three speakers for this day. Please contact Rabbi Chava. Sunday, June 28th, 10:30am, Childcare and RE at 10:30 “The Interdependent Web of Life: Healing the Earth”, Rabbi Chava The Citizens Climate Lobby is powerful call to action for energy equality. Join Mary Van Valin, Lisa Del Buono and Maura Brennen who will have attended the CCL conference in Washington DC for their insights, encouragement and call to action.

Appreciation of

CommUUnity

Holy friends, during May and June we will explore two beautiful themes: appreciation and communion. How fitting it is that our annual meeting (June 7) - my first with you - will be held within the container of these themes. The annual meeting is a good time for us pause and take stock. When I was growing up, we had a reading in our prayer book that has stayed with me for over 40 years. It is written by Rabbi Chaim Stern, of blessed memory. Not all of its language is applicable here, yet it speaks to the spiritual gesture that is our annual meet-ing: In this quiet hour of worship we reflect upon the meaning of our lives. I harbor within - we all do - a vision of my highest self, a dream of what I could and should become. May I pursue this vi-sion, labor to make real my dream. Thus will I give meaning to my life. An artist in the course of painting will pause, lay aside the brush, step back from the canvas, and consider what needs to be done, what direction is to be taken. So does each of us on this Sabbath

eve pause to reflect. As I hope to make my life a work of art, so may this hour of worship help me to turn back to the canvas of life to paint the portrait of my highest self. May my efforts to grow in moral stature bring me the joy of achievement. And may I always hold before my eyes the vision of perfection we call by the name of God ... At the amazing service on Powerful Women last month, we read the following UU affirmation by Michael Hennon, inspired by the Salem Covenant of 1629. (An interesting history of the covenant can be read here: http://www.firstchurchinsalem.org/long-history-22.html). Here is the text we shared: We covenant with one another and do bind ourselves together in the presence of this religious community To express our deepest and most cherished convictions, as they are borne by each person to find a common vision for a better world; To seek the life of the spirit, as it is known by each person, choos-ing with reverence its name; And to walk together in the way of truth and love, as it is shown to us and to all people, in word and in deed. I find this text so beautiful and meaningful, and it got me thinking about what it means to live in covenantal community. Did you know that we, as a congregation, have a covenant? As Jerry Beasley wrote to me, it is "our collective, public agreement to a set of fundamental principles." It was co-created by you, our members. It reads: Mindful of our vibrant Congregational history and steadfastly com-

mitted to a strong future, we strive to promote good in the world and aid each other in ethical and spiritual development. To this end I (we) willfully covenant to: Welcome with open minds and hearts all who gather here; Inspire and respect others, from youngest to oldest, on our various spiritual paths; Assume good intentions, communicate directly, share ideas freely, listen willingly, disagree respectfully and forgive easily; Support the ministry of our congregation through gifts of time, talent and money; Encourage all voices to speak and be heard, as we partici-pate in a collaborative and democratic process.

Annual meetings are about more than mechanics - it is a joyous, deep time to take stock, appreciate and shape our shared future. Thank you for taking some time to consider this. Bless you for co-creating a community of love, honesty and growth. In love and blessing -

Events and Announcements from R. Chava

Wednesday Meditation “The mind can go in a thousand direc-tions, but on this beautiful path, I walk in peace. With each step, the wind blows. With each step, a flower blooms.” ― Thich Nhat Hanh Meditation is the practice of being present in the moment, of bringing compassionate awareness to whatever arises, cultivating friendliness to what is. Good news friends! We will now be offering Wednes-day morning silent meditation EVERY week, from 10 to 10:30 AM in the sanctu-ary! We are seeking friends to ring the bell at the start and finish on the first Wednesdays when Rabbi Chava is not present.

Brew Crew Join Rabbi Chava and a host of ever-changing marvelous fellow UU folks for coffee and conversation at Brew, 108 E. Front Street in Traverse City, Friday May 8 and Friday June 5, from 10 to 12 Noon. As Forrest Gump said, "You never know what yer gonna get." It is SO FUN.

Small Group Ministries You may have noticed that the UU is of-fering a number of small group ministries. Some are longstanding and some are new and emerging. We want to ensure that our small groups are engaging, meaningful and safe for everyone involved. This Fall we will be facilitator training for all small group ministry leaders. Watch your Bea-con for details!

Seeking Speakers for Mother's Day

and Father's Day Services Friends, we are seeking 2 to 3 speakers for a our services on Mother's Day (May 10) and Father's Day (June 21). The Sunday Services Committee and Rabbi Chava want to explore these holidays and the constellation of relationships they repre-sent in depth. We are seeking speakers who can reflect meaningfully on the beau-ties, challenges and lessons of parent/child relationships or what these days mean to you. What story might you share for about 4- 5 minutes? Please contact Rabbi Chava if you are interested.

NOTES NOTES NOTES NOTES

No-Fault Choir—Want to Come and Sing? Traditionally, the Vocal Ensemble takes the summer off, and re-turns to sing on Resumption Sunday. It’s hard to do anything rou-tinely through the summer in northern Michigan, with the Bays sparkling and company—so much company—filling up our bed-rooms. But the wonderful singers in the VE miss each other, and miss singing. So—we’re going to try something new this summer: No-Fault Choir. Here’s the plan: we’ll meet at 9:00 a.m. in the sanctu-ary, prepare something fun and easy to sing—then sing it at the

10:30 service. Music will be available on the bench next to the front door a week or two in advance, for the conscientious, but you won’t have to spend time preparing. You can just show up at 9:00. Side benefit: good parking.

If you’re too busy to rehearse on Thursday nights, or if you always

wanted to try out singing with the choir, this is your chance. The

music will be very easy—I promise—and the camaraderie great.

Tentatively, we’ll do it two Sundays: July 12 and August 16. Join-

ing the No-Fault singers for one Sunday doesn’t mean you’re com-

mitted to anything. If you’ve got company, bring ‘em along.

Community Needs Committee

Wow, what a generous congregation! The Local Community Needs Committee was able to make several donations to local charities this quarter. In keeping with the focus on violence, hunger and homeless-ness advocated at GA last summer, we donated $1000 to Jubilee House, $700 to the Laundry Project, and $500 to each of the following agencies: the Women’s Re-source Center, Habitat for Humanity, Food Rescue, Students in Transition (STEP) and Planned Parenthood. We are deeply appre-ciative of your generous donations to those in need. Ann Geht has resigned from the commit-tee. She was a valuable member with many good suggestions and we appreciate her service. Chris Walter has joined us. As always, if you have a favorite charity that supports people’s basic needs, please fill out a Donation Request Form and put it in the Local Community Needs mailbox in the office or contact any committee mem-ber: Liz Bruning, Shari Cope, Joan Geht and Chris Walter.

UU Book Club Our UU Book Club will get to see a view of Spring around the area as we travel to Empire for our May meeting. The May book is "The Garden of the Evening Mist" by Tan Twan Eng. Our host and discus-sion leader for the May 17th (2:00 pm) gathering is Misty Sheehan. Misty's ad-dress is 8950 W. Stormer Rd, Empire and plans are underway for carpooling -- probably meeting in the parking lot at Tom's West Bay. Be sure to call Misty at 326-4014 to let her know whether you can attend or not. This always helps the host in making seating arrangements and pre-paring snacks. We've had some fantastic discussions the last couple of months. We're on a roll so don't miss out on what should be another evening of super discussion, good wine and food, and outstanding fellowship. As always, newcomers are welcome!

Voting Opportunity at the

June 7th Annual Meeting

One of the most important rights you have as a member of the UUCGT is to vote for your governing board and annual budget. After the Sunday Service on June 7th, there will be a meeting of the congregation at which time we’ll vote to approve next year’s proposed budget, as well as to elect the Board of Trustees, and new members of the Endowment and Leadership Devel-opment Committees. Further reasons to attend are that Rabbi Chava will address an item of importance to our Congregation (See her article above), and I’ve heard there will be some “fun surprises.” Child care and lunch (for the children only) will be provided. Don’t miss this important event. However if you really can’t be there in person, absentee ballots will be available.

I wonder what country I live in and what century this is? I cannot believe the regres-sion our country is taking in the respect, dig-nity, and preservation for human rights. All lives matter, not just Black but white women, Asian women as well as everyone else. Is putting someone in jail for potentially 40 to 60 years an answer to a miscarriage? Yet that is what is happening, just south of us in Indi-ana, and for the second time too! Purvi Patel is 33 years old from a conserva-tive Hindu, Indian family who had the mis-fortune to get pregnant outside of marriage. To her and her family this would be a giant disgrace. She apparently went into labor at 22, 23 or 25 weeks of pregnancy and appar-ently delivered a stillborn fetus. Note the words “apparently.” She was recently sen-tenced to 20 years in prison. She emailed a friend and thought of taking pills to abort, but there was no evidence in her blood that drugs were ingested. Yet they charged her with purposefully ending her pregnancy, aborting it, feticide. To charge her with neglect of a dependent, the prosecution had to show that the fetus was at a viable age when born and that it was alive, not dead at birth. Both these necessary facts are missing from the case as scientifi-cally proven; yet she was charged with ne-

glect of a dependent, the fetus. These two charges are contradictory, obviously. In 2011, a Chinese- American woman, also in Indiana, was imprisoned for a year before charges of feticide were dropped. She was depressed, had tried to commit suicide. She survived but her fetus did not. Is jail where a pregnant woman can obtain help, mentally and physically? I quote (#1): the fact that the only two women charged with infanticide are Asian American is important to note because women of color often lack access to basic health care, counseling, and other reproduc-tive health resources. The Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law's 2013 study on arrests and forced interventions on pregnant women in the U.S. found that approximately 71 percent were low-income women and 59 percent were women of color.” These cases clearly show areas of prejudice and misguided thinking. Are these women getting the counseling and care they need? “It is important to note, that the Right-to-Life organizations have constantly affirmed that their beliefs would never be used (bolding my emphasis) to punish the women involved. Many “pro-life” activists promote anti-abortion measures as “women-protective,” - --- No Indiana law, including its feticide law, has ever been proposed and enacted that

claimed it could or should be used as a basis for prosecuting and incarcerating women who have abortions. Yet, as a result of the Patel case, such a law now apparently exists in Indiana.”(2) “What the Patel case demon-strates is that women who have abortions and those who experience pregnancy loss, may now be subject to investigation, arrest, public trial and incarceration.” (2) Where can a woman safely go for medical help, if their pregnancy is in trouble? youth event in May!

Freezer Meal Exchange Groups

Consider joining our Freezer Meal Exchange Groups – There’s

still room! As a ministry to our UUCGT community, especially young

families, we are organizing groups to help make evening meals just a little

bit easier. Here is a website describing how one woman organized her

friends for a Freezer Meal Exchange Group. http://

Please contact me for more details, or if you are interested in signing up!

Closing Thoughts... Calvin does it again! Something COULD happen today and usually does! So many exciting things are happening here at UUCGT and there is so much yet on the horizon. Sometimes we are “ready” for it, and sometimes we aren’t… but “by golly” we can work together and embrace the possibilities that are waiting just ahead. We may want a suit – sometimes the path may seem uncertain – but who needs a suit when you have the support of an entire community walking with you! May we be each other’s shoulder, helpmates, cheerleaders and companions as we journey forward. Something COULD happen today my friends – are you ready for the awesome possibility of it all?

“Sometimes our light goes out, but is blown again into instant flame by an encounter with another human being.” ― Albert Schweitzer

The Membership Committee held a Prospec-

tive Member Orientation on Sunday, April

19th. We were so pleased to welcome inter-

ested attendees and even more delighted to

sign on eight new members! We are a grow-

ing community! What an exciting time to be a part of UUGCT!

Our own Rabbi Chava, Marco Cabrera, Judy Myers, and Sarah

Montgomery-Richards gave excellent overviews of our congrega-

tion. Also attending were Sue Pyne, Rick and Chris Walter, and

Jane Watts from the Membership Committee. Thank you all for

your help and expertise.

We will introduce and formally welcome these new folks at a Join-

ing Ceremony during the service on June 7th. All new members

who have joined since March will be honored at this event.

We do have a date change for the next Prospective Member Orien-

tation. It will be held after the service on June 28th. Please mark

your calendars if you are interested in attending.

The Membership Committee

is also seeking more help ! Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 19th at 4:30 at the church. We

will be planning the New Member Joining Ceremony. If you would

like to join this team for the fun work of welcoming others, contact

Cathy Annelin at 941-1497 or [email protected]

Please note: My email in the latest directory is incorrect. There is a

period between cathy and annelin. Hey…mistakes happen.

New Member

We are pleased to welcome and introduce new member, Karen

Stewart Williams to our Congregation!

Karen became a member on April 5. She is a somewhat retired mas-

sage therapist. Karen enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, snowshoeing

and reading. Her current favorite books are The Dance of the Dissi-

dent Daughter, and The Alphabet v the Goddess, and her favorite

film is The Imitation Game. Karen came to UUCGT because she

wanted a church that “was open at the top”--not Christian; and she

became a member after reading UU literature and enjoying laughing

during services.

Life is Beautiful!

Have you noticed what is happening around you? The Life is Beautiful show, displayed here in our Sanctuary, in-

cludes artwork from our members. YOU! The show extends into the Social Hall, where unframed, and even a few

small framed pieces are on display for all to enjoy during the coffee hour. This is your show, your expression of

Beauty.

Joan Chittester says “Beauty scatters the seeds of hope in us” These are some of the beautiful seeds that you are

tossing about and sewing for the spring. Mary Ann Force’s depiction of reflective moonlit glow over a river. Arline

Howe has a similar sentiment, with a silent landscape- did you ever notice that light is most often at the end of a

tunnel? Claire Cabrera’s electric doodle reminds us of the electricity that life is. Helen Wells depiction of her

daughter looking outward and away from the viewer symbolizes the turning out towards the unknown, much like

Miriam the tambourine player. Paxson’s elusive color palette reminds me that life is a subtly changing rainbow into

loveliness. Josephine’s portrait of a traditional African woman gives us a up close look at (perhaps) an unfamiliar

face . Karen Mars and Shelley Burns' weavings remind us of the traditional and lovingly crafted hand work that has

been developed over hundreds of years by countless women. Paula Hartman captures the peacefulness and har-

mony of a Japanese inspired look at landscape. Krista Cain’s declaration of motherhood stands squarely and

proudly in front of us. Mary Cheney’s watercolors are peaceful expressions of life on our planet.

We are a community of people with different ideas and different perspectives that merge into the whole of this

community. And it’s all beautiful. Every small and large piece contributes to the weaving of this beloved commu-

nity.
