Dear Friends of Marion First UMC,

French writer Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting America in 1831, said “I sought for the greatness of the United States in her commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields, and boundless forests—and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich mines, her vast world commerce, her public school system, and in her institutions of higher learning— and it was not there. I looked for it in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution—and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!”

As you venture forth upon summertime excursions I hope you might reflect on that which has made for the greatness of our shared history as a nation. Has it not been opportunity to freely seek out and live a life devoted to the righteousness proscribed by our creator with the individual gifts he has granted each? Many have given much if not all of their life for this great liberty unknown for most of human history.

That greatness Tocqueville noted did not spring from a bounty of natural assets, nor from grand institutions of our own design, but from a teeming abundance of people seeking God’s word weekly in places of worship. Please continue to put first neither flag nor constitution but God’s word in your daily life. Take up his eternal word before you read a temporal word of the day.

If we all aspire to the righteousness of God, we shall continue to be a good in relations to other nations and great among nations. While some reject God entirely, let us become better citizens of this nation by having become better citizens of heaven. And for the sake of those who have not yet discovered the love of God themselves, may we maintain charity toward all.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Warren

Operation College

Bound

We met our goal!

We raised $600 for each of the three college bound kids

that needed help with dorm and college supplies.

This has been such a meaningful blessing for our

youth and our church that we will continue this

ministry in the future. Thank you to all who

supported this great cause!

Because of you, three people who may not have had the

opportunity, will be going to college this fall with the

things that they need!
