Student Quick Guide —

Getting Started

Overview

You can use Family Connection to access online resources, communicate with your school and use the many planning tools available from Naviance.

To access Family Connection, you must have the following: • A computer that is connected to the Internet • Your username and password, provided by your

school.

Follow the steps below to log into Family Connection: • Go to _ • Enter your username in the Username field. • Enter your password in the Password field.

Add your personal e-mail address:

1. Click the About Me tab. 2. Click the Profile link. 3. Under Personal Profile on the right click

the pencil to add your email address on Family Connection.

Complete tasks:

My Planner

1. Click the My Planner tab. 2. Click the Tasks Assigned to Me tab. 3. Your list of tasks appears. 4. Click on task Create Goals. 5. From the Drop Down Menu complete goals:

• Academic Goal

1. Click the About Me tab. 2. Click the Tasks link. 3. Your list of tasks appears. 4. Complete Survey.

• Save survey after every task or use a different tab.

• Click on SAVE at the bottom of the page.

• After reviewing the Strengths Explorer, CLICK View Matching Occupation List

5. Click on task Build Resume.

NAVIANCE QUICK GUIDE:

STEP BY STEP

Update your 'Colleges I'm Applying To' 1. Click on the 'Colleges' tab 2. Select 'Colleges I'm Applying To'

3. Select 'Add To My List' and add all colleges you plan to apply

to (Do NOT check the box to send transcripts at this time!)

4. You may also 'Move To Application List' any colleges which

you have saved under 'Colleges I'm Thinking About' 5. Begin looking at each college's application requirements and procedures for Undergraduate Admissions

Requesting a Teacher Recommendation

1. Please check the requirements of each college to determine if and how many letters of recommendation are needed 2. SEE the teacher face to face to ask for a letter of recommendation on your behalf.

Note: If applying via Common App, an account and FERPA waiver must be complete to continue *See Common Application Section for details 3. Select a teacher from the drop-down list: It is important to

note that teachers will only be available in the drop-down list if

they have been added to Naviance, given a user account, and had the box checked to appear in this list. If your teacher is not in this list, please see your counselor

4. Review the colleges listed directly from the Colleges I'm

applying to list and check one or more boxes to indicate where

the teacher should be sending the letter of recommendation.

5. You can add a personal note (up to 3,000 characters) to the

teacher, highlighting any important aspects of their applications (such as first choice schools, early decision applications,

intended major or degree of study), that they may want the

teacher to consider when writing a letter of recommendation.

6. Click the Save button at the bottom of the screen which returns you to the recommendation status page. At the top of

the screen, a green status bar shows the teacher's name and

number of request for the student. 7. From here, you will see the status for all Teacher

Recommendations requests you have made.

Complete your application

1. Please check the application requirements of each college to

determine how you are to apply. (Most colleges accept ONE of the following: Online via the

college's website gg ,via printed application/mail rO, OR

through *Common App' (Often OPTIONAL) 2. IF you are using the *Common App (step by step section to

follow below) please log on to www.commonapp.org and

complete the application

3. If you are applying via the college's website complete your

application online

4. If you are applying with a printed application/mail you will

need to bring all materials that must be mailed along with 4

postage stamps to the counseling office

5. After you have applied, update your list of 'Colleges I'm

Applying To" by clicking on the link in the 'My App' column. Each

college you are applying to will appear. Check the box 'I have

submitted my application' for every completed application

6. Indicate the Application Type (Regular, Rolling, EA, ED, etc.)

for every completed application

7. Scroll down to the very bottom of the screen and click

'Update Applications'

*Common Application

1. IF using the Common App to apply, create an account at

http://www.commonapp.org (you will complete your

Common Application on this website-add at least one college) 2. Sign the FERPA Waiver

3. Click on the 'Colleges' tab

4. Select 'Colleges I'm Applying To'

5. Match your Common App by following the prompts in the

blue shaded area on Naviance

6. Click 'Match'

Requesting a Transcript

1. Click on the 'Colleges' tab

2. Select 'Colleges I'm Applying To' 3. Click 'Request Transcripts' under Current Applications 4. Each college listed in 'Colleges I'm Applying To' will appear

5. Check the box to request the transcript

6. Scroll down and click 'Request Transcripts'

Sending Official SAT/ACT Scores MTLHS School Code: 393730 1. Must send SAT scores from http://www.satcollegeboard.org 2. Must send ACT scores directly from www.ACTstudent.org

Checking transcript status 1. Go to the 'Colleges' tab 2. Click on 'Colleges I'm Applying To' 3. View the status in the columns for 'Transcript', 'Office Status', and 'My App'

Scholarship Search 1. Click on 'College' tab. 2. Scroll down and click on 'Scholarships and Money' 3. "Scholarship List" provides local and private or publicly

sponsored scholarships. 4. For LOCAL scholarships, click on "Scholarship List'

NCAA Clearinghouse Transcript Request 1. Student must register with NCAA Eligibility Center 2. Transcripts will be sent through NCAA website, not through Naviance 3. Counseling Office will monitor and process requests through NCAA website.

Sign up for a College Representative Visit

(College representatives meet with interested PRE-registered students at MTLHS during the school day) 1. Click on 'College' tab 2. Under 'My Colleges' in the column on the right, select 'View All Upcoming College Visits' 3. To view the college visit details click on 'Information'

4. To register for the college visit click on 'Sign Up' (If you have registered and are no longer interested in attending please follow the same steps above selecting 'Cancel' to remove your

name from the list) 5. Inform your teacher about your attendance and complete missed work 6. Arrive on time for your scheduled college visit

DO NOT FORGETIIIIII

• Be sure to give your Counselor at least 10

days to process your transcript request. Do

not wait until the day before application

deadline to send your requests!!!

• Be sure to see your Counselor if you have any

questions about Naviance or the application

process.

Naviance Family Connection Quick Guide

Talk to your student about how to log onto his/her Naviance account and explore it as a family. The school does not have access to passwords that students have chosen. If you are having problems logging into your account, ask your student to see either his/her counselor

COLLEGE-RELATED FEATURES

Feature Description How to Access (all instructions

SuperMatch Use different criteria to widen or narrow search results. When viewing a college profile, you can click on the tabs to learn more details about majors and degrees, financial aid, admission info, etc. You can save your searches for later reference.

1. Click on the Colleges tab. 2. Click on Super&latch

Document Library Contains pdfs, presentations, and other files that can be downloaded as resources for the college application process.

1. Start at the HOME page. 2. On the top right hand side of the

screen, click on Document Library. The Document Library is accessible only through this page.

Maps Visual maps of colleges that many students have applied to, enrolled in, and more.

3. Click on the Colleges tab. 4. Click on College maps.

Summer Enrichment

Opportunities

A database of hundreds of summer programs and internships across the world. Use the drop-down menu to browse by category of interest, or do a keyword search. Be sure to go directly to the program's original website in order to get the most recent information.

1. Click on the Colleges tab. 2. Click on Enrichment Programs.

Scholarship List Local, state, national, and college scholarship opportunities are listed here and updated regularly during the school year. Use the drop-down menu to browse by categories such as Athletic, Careerinterest, Local and State„ etc. Click on column headers to sort entries by deadline, award amount, etc.

National ' Scholarship List

Naviance partners with another company called Sallie Mae which keeps a database of national scholarships. You may input your profile (GPA, test scores, interests, etc.) and it will search its database for scholarships that match your profile.

Tasks Not sure what you should be doing in order to graduate and apply to college? Check out the Tasks assigned to you by your counselor.

1. Click on About Me tab. 2. Click on Tasks.

Resume Record all your high school awards, activities, volunteer work, sports, etc. in Naviance here. Counselors rely on what you put here to help them write your recommendation letters, so make sure this is updated regularly. This feature also allows you to create printable versions of a resume for jobs and colleges.

These graphs provide historical data on admissions results for students in the last three years. (Data is self-reported by students.) They can be used to give you an idea of how competitive a school might

Keep a list of colleges that you are considering. When you have finalized your list and are ready to begin your applications, transfer them to the Colleges I'm Applying To list.

1. Click on the Colleges tab. 2. Click on Colleges I'm Thinking

About, 3. Search for the college you want. 4. Click on Add to List.

Colleges I'm Applying To

This list allows your counselor to see what schools you are applying to, and it also allows them and your teachers to electronically submit recommendation letters, transcripts, secondary school reports, etc. (i.e. all necessary forms for your application) to your colleges. Only colleges in your "Colleges I'm Applying To" will be able to receive recommendation letters, transcripts, and other materials that counselors and teachers need to submit on your behalf, so make sure that this list is up-to-date, and to inform your counselor and teachers if you make any changes to this list
