Beach volleyball is a sport in which two pairs of players playing in a court of 8 x 16

meters. This sport began on Santa Monica s beaches in USA at the 30 s and being included in

the Olympic Games program 96 Atlanta. In the particular sport of volleyball, performance

analysis have been much conducted using observational methodology. For beach volleyball,

authors have focused on the technical of players and description of patterns movement of

players. The literature has also focused on the relationship between success and unsuccess

points. As a result, notational analysis has focused on purely technical and tactical elements,

analysis external influences and their relationship in achieving points in professional games.

The aimed of this study was to know the different types of serve in a set depending on

the period in which the players are establishing, whether there are significant differences

between the uses of one serve or another. Serve is one of technical elements that are used in

beach volleyball. Serve is the time when the player starts with the ball. It is important to

know which types are most commonly used during the match.

Participants of this study was five men s team with a total of 10 players in 4 games of

the European Beach Volleyball Championship in 2005. The participants are 30 4.6 years of

age, 87 5.3 kg of weight and 1.90 0.04 meters of height. Researchers have used two

cameras of Panasonic NV-GS21 camcorder mini-DV recording placed in the frontal plane.

To see the full court, the camera is put distance of five and a half meters from the baseline.

Another camera is a Sony mini-DV recording Handycamm as lateral camera that allows us to

clearly the action from both on one side and the other. The type of serve used by the two

groups were analyzed. Serve a total of 327 have been recorded. Types serve namely, float

serve (SF), jump float serve (FS) and jump serve (SP). For each of the sets analysed, 3 score

period were established as Period 1 (F1) from point 1 to 7, Period 2 (F2) from point 8 to 14

and Period 3 (F3) from point 15 to 21. Sportcode v.8.5.2 software was used to analysed the

videotape. The statistical analysis was conducted using the statistical software SPSS 19 in

order to calculate descriptive statistics and frequencies. The analysis to establish the

significance (p 0.05) of quantitative data was performed using the Chi- square test. From

all the serves by each, it made a mean of 10 7 SF, 21 8 FS and 51 10 SP. From the

researched found that 11.6% (38 serves) were float serve (SF), 26.0% (85 serves) were jump

float serve (FS) and finally 62.4% (204 serves) were jump serve (SP).

If you look to serve use during the period was found that for the period 1 (F1), jump

serve (SP) has decreased from 89.7% to 27.3% in period 3 (F3). For float serve it increased

from 6.3% in period 1 (F1) to 23.4% in period 3 (F3). The significant increase occurred in the

jump float serve (FS), from 4% in period 1 (F1) to 49.4% in period 3 (F3). Jump serve (SF)

decreased from period 1 to period 3 because players were tired. This is due to the jump serve

    requires a lot of energy.

Float serve (SF) and jump float serve (FS) used in period 3 (F3) because this kind of

serves are seeking certain areas and distortion on the balls flight path caused by the flight,

creating difficulties in accept on the opposite team. This is because in period 3 (F3), the

players are desperate to get victory points before performing a powerful serve and less

    controllable the jump serve.

Beach volleyball was introduced in Malaysia in the early 1990. The Malaysia s team

(4- players) were invited to participate in Hong Kong, China, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and

Philippines Opens. Malaysia hosted the international invitation in 1992 and 1993 at Batu

Ferringhi, Penang. In 1992, the 1stINTEL National 4-player event was created in Penang.

Beach Volleyball made its way onto the city in Shah Alam in 1995, then moved to the

beautiful beach resort in Awana Kijal, Terengganu. The 2-player event was introduced to

replace 4-player event. In 1997 ISOMAX Beach Volleyball Tour was launched at Kuala

Terengganu, Kuantan and Penang. Our men champion pair of Mohd Nasiruddin and Lee Kok

Peng won silver medal in the 1997 Jakarta Sea Games.

Found that beach volleyball has long played sports in Malaysia in early 1990, but the

game is not yet included in the list of co-curricular activities in schools . Perhaps if any, it

played in schools near the beach . In this article , a technique that is important in the game of

volleyball serve was studied. As a teacher I can apply the discussion of this article to be

taught to students during physical education activities .

This article selected for my study because it is carefully done by using two cameras

placed outside the court to capture the movement of athletes . Researchers have shown

available data on the types of serve used in the form of a pie chart that is easy to understand

using different colours . A bit confusing is that the symbols used for serve like SF for float

serve , FS for jump float serve and the SP for the jump serve . Similar studies should also be

carried out on female athletes so that comparisons can be made . As a conclusion this article

can add our knowledge of another game that is not so highlighted i.e beach volleyball. .
