A Message from the Local Organizing

CommitteeAugust 24, 2018

On the behalf of California State University, Long Beach, it is with great pleasure that the Beach Crew Alumni Association and rowers of LBSU welcome all competitors, officials, parents, and spectators visiting Long Beach for the 2018 Naples Island Collegiate Rowing Challenge.

The NICRC offers two exciting races. The first is a challenging head race designed for experienced rowers. In this race rowers travel 4400m around Naples Island and finish in Marine Stadium. Following the Head race are the Novice Sprints. The Novice Sprints event continues to offer the best venue for athletes new to the sport. Novice rowers test their newly acquired skills in racing conditions, sprinting down our 850m course within the sheltered Marine Stadium. The event is managed by an outstanding group of US Rowing Referees and experience volunteers. As in past years, all athletes and coaches will be treated to a free pancake breakfast courtesy of the Seal Beach Lions Club.

This year marks the fifth year of this regatta. We thank the Queen Mary for their continued support and challenge all collegiate teams to compete for the Queen Mary Trophy. This is a perpetual trophy awarded to the collegiate team with the highest total points for the head race event.

Our regatta is a community effort. We’d like to thank our alumni, the Seal Beach Lion’s Club, the Long Beach Yacht Club, the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, the City of Long Beach, the Long Beach Aquatic Capital of America, the Long Beach Rowing Association, our Southwest Region USRowing referees, and our volunteers who have contributed countless hours to make this regatta a landmark event for west coast rowing.

We hope you will join us this November for a great day of competitive rowing! We hope you will also take the extra time to enjoy some of the tremendous attractions in the City of Long Beach.

See you in November!

Kenneth Glenn, John O’Donnell Bill Eldon, President Regatta Director Chief Referee Beach Crew Alumni Assoc. Long Beach State USRowing CSULB 49er Foundation

Check-inTeams may check-in at the Marine Stadium 5S Building from 6:00 A.M. to 7:00 A.M. on the day of racing. All crews must be checked in by 7:00 A.M. A race schedule for the head race will be released in your packet when you check-in.

Coaches/Coxswains MeetingThe regatta staff will conduct a quick meeting starting at 7:00 AM at the 5S Building to review any changes and important items before the crews launch. Any questions or concerns can be addressed at that time or at check-in.

CourtesyThe Marine Stadium is located in a residential neighborhood. We ask that you respect the privacy of our neighbors by keeping the noise down prior to 7:00 A.M.

Bow Balls, Competitor Numbers, Heel TiesNo shell may be launched without a bow ball. All heel ties will be checked before your boat can enter the water. Heel ties may not exceed three inches from the baseboard. A USRowing referee will affix a sticker on the starboard-bow side of each shell, and record the name of your boat. This may occur when you are not on site. Checking this ahead of time will expedite your launch. Launching before checking heel ties will exclude you from your race. This is a USRowing regulation and we must adhere to it. At check-in, each crew will be given competitor numbers for the coxswain and the bowman, and a paper bow number. Participants are responsible for providing their own plastic bow card.

FoodAll crews are invited to join Beach Crew for breakfast from 9:00A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Building 5S (West side Marine Stadium). This event is provided free-of-charge to all athletes and coaches by the Beach Crew Alumni Association and the Seal Beach Lions Club. Please indicate the number of participants in your crew on your entry forms so we can give a proper head count. Parents and spectators are welcome to join us for a $5 minimum donation. Please arrive before 11:00 A.M. before the kitchen closes.

Launch SiteAll crews should plan on launching from the beach at Marine Stadium. As a reminder, please bring your own slings. Restroom facilities are available on both ends of the parking lots and other areas along Marine Stadium, buildings noted 9S and 7S. On the boathouse side, the restroom is 8N. 6:00 P.M. unless other arrangements are made with the LOC. Only regatta traffic may pass through this gate. Please leave space for the fire lane next to the curb.

SpectatorsSpectators may gather along the beach area, or along the concrete paths around Marine Stadium. This is ideal as it gives the viewers a full view of the entire stadium course. Please DO NOT confront the regatta staff or gather in front of the judges’ stand (“3S” Building) at the finish line.

We advise that spectators not gather around the loading dock, ramps, and washing platforms, at the Pete Archer Rowing Center due to the high amount of boat launching traffic that is expected to be there. Thank you for your cooperation.

Spectators should use the following address when traveling to the regatta by entering through the main gate noted in the maps:

Long Beach Marine Stadium | 5255 Paoli Way | Long Beach, CA 90803

Traffic PatternsPlease see the attached course maps for the head race and novice sprints. If departing from the Pete Archer Rowing Center, watch for any boat traffic traveling through the Cerritos Chanel. Crews will warm-up between the 5S Building (where you checked-in) and the Davies Bridge. Do not pass the finish line on your warm-ups as you will be penalized. Follow a counter-clockwise course to warm up before meeting by the Appian Way bridge to head to the starting line. A race volunteer will assist you from the bridge in dispatch order.

Head Race CourseA run-through video of the course is available online:

http://www.beachcrew.org/location/

See the maps for further details and the times when you should launch. Coxswains, your crew will approach the low Second Street “Lewis Bridge” (see the video) when you begin your warm-up and later return to starting line through the “Sweat Box” along Bayshore Avenue. Crews may not race through this area. Do not pass other crews in the Sweat Box without good judgement. It is advised to travel under the right span to ensure the path is clear on the other end. This will require your crew to pull harder on starboard side once under the bridge, then port side once approaching the starting line.

The Alamitos Bay Head Race course starts behind the low Second Street “Lewis Bridge” at the L-shaped dock. A referee will be on the beach side. Two large buoys will mark the start line.

Once started, crews proceed south along the Belmont Peninsula, through “Dog Bark” (Dog Beach Park). This is the narrowest part of the course. Stay to the right of all large yellow buoys (yellow dots on the maps). As you approach the waterway going out to the jetty, start turning left towards the Long Beach Yacht Club (LBYC). Once at the corner your crew will need to make a 90 degree turn to head up the Marine Stadium for the remaining 2000 meters. As you approach the tall Davies Bridge (Second Street), proceed under the center span between the two bents. On the other side of the bridge look out for regatta staff controlling the Davis Launch Ramp. The center span should be cleared for you at all times. Once the crew approaches the 1000 meter pole at the Cerritos Channel, you have a clear waterway for the remainder of your race.

The total distance is 4,200 meters. Orange triangular buoys are planted along the course for your safe

navigation. Always stay to the right of them. They are marked as yellow dots on the maps. Once past the

finish line, red buoys mark your return lane. Stay inside the return lane. Please do not enter back onto the course for any reason unless instructed by a referee. After warm-up/check-in with course clerk at the Appian Bridge.
