Our Church is equipped with hearingloop for hearing aid wearers. Switching your hearing aid to the “TMode” position should allow you to hear the service. All weekend SJR Masses are live streamed on the Internet. Go to www.stjohnfairport.org and click on Live Streaming Weekend Mass. Beginning next weekend I am going to invite all of us to do just that for three minutes before our weekend Masses begin. A parishioner wrote me a few weeks ago having experienced this practice next door at Assumption while visiting there one weekend. He found it so helpful and wondered if we could not embrace the same practice. Our Music Ministrysometimes Brad on the flute, Marko on the organ, or one of our many talented High School and Middle School musicianswill prepare quiet meditative music as a reminder for us as we take some time before our Eucharist Celebration begins, to quiet ourselves. The Psalm text really says it all. It is in stillness that we open a path for God to break through. Much has been said and written about how ‘connected’ we are, and the toll it all takes on our spirits. While many of us have come to depend on that connectivity, it can easily consume not only our time, but our thoughts and spirits too. Silence (being disconnected) has been recognized in our spiritual tradition from earliest writings to be sacred time. Silence creates a space. Silence creates a break from routine and distraction. Silence creates the environment in which God speaks. Amid our constant press of activity, our minds and souls afford little space for God’s movement. Two minutes, you will say, is not much, and it isn’t, but it is space. On the practical side, our bells are scheduled to ring one minute before the beginning of Mass. We will invite the church into quiet at the three minute mark. Many of you may still be arriving; please know that quiet is being observed inside the church starting at the three minute mark. Our Lector will begin the announcements following the ringing of the bells. This may take a few weeks to become comfortable and familiar. I hope you will embrace it, and be conscious of one another as we make time for stillnessboth within ourselves and around us in church preparing for Mass. The Second Vatican Council taught that the Eucharist is both the source and summit of our faith. Creating even this brief time of quiet can be an enormous help as we ready ourselves to enter into the celebration. In a column following Christmas, I attempted to thank the many, many individuals and groups that made it all possible. I learned that I missed our Video Techs! As you hear announced every Sunday, all our Masses are broadcast to the Web by our Video Tech teams. Thank you so much to them not only for Christmas….that was huge….but for the many, many hours that they have given to operating our system. Last year, JanDec ‘1814,920 visits were logged on our live stream. When you sort out repeat visitors that represents 5,728 individual visitors. Most 5,728 come for the US. However, 62 from the United Kingdom, 69 Canada, 60 Argentina, 33 Netherlands, 17 each from Italy and Ireland, Germany, Mexico and Australia accounting for the remaining 45. Our message is spanning the globe, and it is due to a dedicated team of Video Techs. WE NEED YOU AT THE VIDEO CONTROLS! This is a perfect ministry for parents with teens as a team. So, whether as a parent/teen team or individual, we need you. Contact me and I will pass your information along to the Video Team. STEPHEN MINISTRY CORNER “Christ caring for others...through others.”

Was It Really Only Last Year?

You stayed up to watch the New Year come in together. You talked about the past year, all the memories, good and bad. How you laughed over some of them. But this year you’re alone. And memories bring you nothing but pain. During this painful time, a Stephen Minister would like to be there for you. S/He will listen and care as you sort through your feelings. Call 2485993 x16 to leave your confidential message...and your phone # too.

SCOUT SUNDAY

All parish Boy & Girl Scout units and individual Scouts belonging to other units are invited to participate along with their family at St. John of Rochester RC Church for Scout Sunday observance. It will be held on Saturday, February 2nd at the 5:00 P.M. Mass. At the service, special recognition will be given to those Scouts that have received their religious emblem this past year. If you have earned one and would like to have it presented to you at Mass call Earl Knab at 585.202.1846 (cell) or email [email protected] to make arrangements. Scouts will meet in the Ministry Building Gathering Room (adjacent to the church) at 4:30 P.M. in preparation for the procession into church. There will be reserved seating for Scouts and leaders. All other family members and friends may use the available seating in the church. Scout units should bring their unit flag and stand. Any Scout interested in being a Greeter, Altar Server, or be a participant in the reading of the petitions should contact Earl Knab or call the parish office.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

The next meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry will be held on Monday, January 14th from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. in the Gathering Room. Keep warm with us while knitting and crocheting for those in need of prayers. Come see what we are all about. Bring your yarn and needles or crochet hook.

We are looking for new members. How about joining us? If you don't know how to knit or crochet, we will teach you.

Shawls can also be made privately without coming to a meeting. For details, please call Judy Knab at 2233434, Lois Rixner at 3771242 or Donna Stein 6985014.

Prayer shawls will be blessed by the presider at the 12:00 Noon Mass on Sunday, January 20th. After this Mass only, shawls will be available if you would like to give one away. You may also call Judy or Lois to obtain a shawl at any other time.

RED CROSS THANK YOU!

Thank you so much to you and St. John of Rochester for hosting the special winter holiday blood drive on January 2, 2019. We are very appreciative that you answered the call to help us host additional blood drives at this critical time of year.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have the turn out we’d hoped for and we missed collecting our “goal” of 19 units. But we did collect 12 units of blood and those 12 units will impact and save up to 36 lives!

Mark your calendars now for the annual Fairport Angels Memorial Blood Drive on Thursday, June 20, 2019 from 1:007:00 PM in the Gym.

MASS INTENTIONS

GRIEF is a necessary aspect of continuity in our relationship in the Communion of Saints. It deepens our appreciation of the person who has died...it helps us understand things we had not realized before...and it takes us onto a new and more mature level of personal growth. Offering Masses for the deadand being present when that intention is offeredis no idle exercise. It is truly an act of Faith in the continuity of a relationship in Christ (Who is the same Yesterday, Today and Forever) between ourselves and our deceased loved ones. It is something eternally more significant than the best coffins or the most elaborate tombstones can provide.

Consistent Life Ethic CORNER Cloning

"The act of cloning is a predetermined act which forces the image and likeness of the donor and is actually a form of imposing dominion over another human being which denies the human dignity of the child and makes him or her a slave to the will ofothers. The child would be seen as an object anda product of ones fancy rather than as a unique human being, equal in dignity to those who created him or her.The practice of cloning would usurp the role of creator and would thus be seen as an offensebefore God." Pontifical Academy of Life, Reflections on Cloning (1997), no 3 (www.usccb.org website)

PARISH TITHING Family Promise of Wayne County (FPWC) has been chosen to be St. John of Rochester’s tithing recipient for January, 2019.

Family Promise of Wayne County is a nondenominational, nongovernmental organization dedicated to helping children and their families move from

homelessness to sustainable independence. FPWC is affiliated with National Family Promise, founded in 1986.

Through a network of local organizations and congregations, Family Promise of Wayne County provides shelter, meals, and support to homeless children and their families. Their professional staff coordinates with existing social service resources to expand opportunities available to their guest families.

Family Promise of Wayne County is a coordinated local effort that is bringing communities and congregations together to help homeless families regain their housing, their independence, and their dignity

The Mission of FPWC is to help homeless and lowincome families achieve sustainable independence through a nongovernmental, nondenominational communitybased response. Basic elements of the program include:Lodging and Meals: About four to six times a year for one week at a time Host congregations provide overnight lodging, meals (supper, breakfast, and brownbag lunch), and hospitality. Hosting rotates among the eight to thirteen Host congregations in FPWC, which provide lodging for three to five families (up to fourteen individuals) from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the next morning.Volunteers Host Guests: Volunteers are the heart of FPWC; without them, it cannot exist.Volunteers provide a variety of services: cooking and serving meals, playing with children or helping them with homework, and staying overnight. Beyond providing lodging and meals, volunteers interact with the guests, treating them with respect and responding with compassion.Social Service Agencies Provide Associated Services: Local social service agencies refer families to FPWC. The agencies may also help guests find housing, jobs, and other services. Since Family Promise is primarily comprised of volunteers, the social service agencies help assess potential guest families for active substance abuse, domestic violence or psychiatric problems and provide appropriate services.Professional Case Workers Provide Support at the Day Center: Guests use a local day center, the Manse of the Lions Presbyterian Church, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to shower, care for preschool children, and seek employment. Many guests are employed during the day and go to work. During the school year, children go to school. The day center provides guests with a mailing address and a home base from which to conduct their housing search.

Transportation Support for Guests: Program vehicles transport guests to and from the day center.Bedding and luggage are also carried to the next Host Congregation.
