Here’s the Sitch…

My Dear Parishioners,

In commemoration of Respect Life month, we are restoring and revitalizing the Respect Life ministry here in our parish. The purpose of this ministry is to build a culture of life by embracing our mission as messengers of God’s love. Through prayer and education, the ministry will provide information regarding Catholic teachings on the dignity of human life and on issues such as: Abortion and Post-Abortion Healing, Assisted Suicide, Conscience Protection, Contraception, Euthanasia, Stem Cell Research, IVF/Reproduction Technology, Capi-tal Punishment, January Roe Events, and Prayers for Life.

The ministry will also focus on implementing ways to raise awareness about the benefits of a world that has greater respect for human life and greater commitment to justice and peace. If you would like to join Respect Life Ministry, please call the Parish Office at 510.797.1660 or email [email protected]

Blessings,

Fr. Ken

Friends, perhaps, we can easily identify with the disciples’ pleading in today’s Sunday gos-pel: “Lord, increase our faith.” Whether we consider ourselves the worst of sinners or the greatest of saints, each one of us feels the need to have more faith. What is faith? What does “believing” really mean?

Faith is more than just an intellectual assent to certain teachings about God or doctrines of the Church. Rather, it is an act of the will wherein I freely choose God and to believe in Him; and to entrust myself to Him who loves me, a love that has been fully revealed in Je-sus of Nazareth. In other words, faith is not how much I know about God; rather, it is how deep my relationship is with Him. It is how I respond to the love and faithfulness that He has first shown me. And it is how I trust in this love and how I turn over my life to His love that sustains me and saves me.

Sometimes, however, we are tempted to look at the saints or people whom we consider holy, and say, “Well if I had their faith, I would be able to do the things that they do.” But Jesus’ response to his disciples and to us is: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, and would say to the mulberry tree, be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it would obey you.” Friends, if we have true faith, true trust, and true confidence in God and His love, we, too, are capable of great things like the saints because each one of us has been given the seed of faith. And this seed, small though it may be, contains in itself a tree.

October is the month of the Rosary and Respect for Life. This is a fitting and blessed time to let the seed of faith grow within us by committing ourselves to God in love and service by praying the Rosary and participat-ing in our parish Respect Life events. Check the bulletin for information about planned events for this month of October.
