ISSUE 5 JUNE-JULY 2017

The summer months in the Midwest can be torture for those who’s skin burns easily. I

should know; being of Swedish-Irish decent, and having red hair, blue eyes, and fair skin, the

sun and I do not see eye-to-eye. Over the last 30+ years, I have dealt with the sun in every

possible way: 70 SPF sunscreen, long-sleeves, hats, shade, etc.; I have done it all.

Here are some easy tips for others that have skin that reacts more severely to the sun than

others (courtesy of the Mayo Clinic):

Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m: The sun's rays are strongest during these

hours, so try to schedule outdoor activities for other times.

Cover up: Wear tightly woven clothing that covers you, including your arms and legs. Consider

wearing clothing or outdoor gear specially designed to provide sun protection. Also wear a broad-

brimmed hat, which protects you better than a baseball cap or golf visor does.

Use sunscreen frequently and generously: No matter what your skin type is, use a broad-

spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply it every

two hours (or more often if you're swimming or perspiring). If you're also using insect repellent,

apply the sunscreen first.

Wear sunglasses when outdoors: You offer your eyes the best protection outdoors by choosing

the highest UV protection-rated sunglasses. Darker lenses are not necessarily better at blocking UV

rays. Check the UV rating on the label when buying new glasses.

Don't expect a base tan to protect: Some people think getting a base tan prevents sunburn.

The idea is that a few sessions of indoor tanning will protect them from burning in the sun. Research

doesn't support this. A base tan is no substitute for good sun protection. Plus, the risks of long-term

tanning outweigh the unproven benefits of a base tan.

I hope this helps your summer skin troubles. Be smart, wear sunscreen, find shade, and

enjoy your summer!

Theme Songs of the Five Branches of the Military

Chuck H., husband of our current resident, Dottie H., was kind enough to deliver the lyrics of all five military branch’s

theme songs. Chuck is a member of the Friendship Singers, a men's group of singers that visit our community each

month. The Friendship Singers serenade our residents with some of their favorite music during their visits including

these military songs. They are also generous with their time and do such a nice job visiting with our residents during

their stay.

Air Force

Off we go, into the wild blue yonder, climbing high, into the sun. Here they come, zooming to meet our thunder; at ‘em

boys, give ‘er the gun! Down we dive, spouting our flame from under, off with one terrible roar! We live in fame or go

down in flame, for nothing can stop the US Air Force!

Army

First to fight for the right, and to build our nation’s might, and the army goes rolling along. Proud of all we have done,

fighting ‘til the battle’s won, and the Army goes rolling along. Then it’s Hi! Hi! Hey! The Army’s on it’s way. Count off the

cadence loud and strong! For where e’er we go, you will always know, that the Army goes rolling along!

Coast Guard

We’re always ready for the call, we place our trust in Thee. Through surf and storm and howling gale, high shall our pur-

pose be. “Semper Paratus” is our guide, our fame, our glory too. To fight, and save, or fight and die, Ah Coast Guard we

are for you!

Navy

Anchor aweigh, my boys, anchors aweigh! Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day. Through our last night on

shore, hail to the foam. Until we meet once more, here’s wishing you a happy voyage home.

Marines

From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli; we will fight our country’s battles, in the air, on land and sea. First

to fight for right and freedom, and to keep our honor clean; we are proud to claim the title of United States Marines!

We celebrated National Nursing

Home Week, May 14-20. We had

music, food, games and more. We

were lucky enough to have friends,

family, and volunteers come visit

throughout the week. We also

hosted a Minute to Win It staff com-

petition. It was a blast! We can’t

wait for next year!

We hope that everyone had a great Memorial Day! On May 31st, Aberdeen Health &

Rehab celebrated National Senior Fitness day with a walk outside along the bike path,

followed up by delicious fruit in the Community Life room. It was all about getting up and

remembering why it is important to move. Thank you to those who participated. Summer

is quickly approaching and we are looking forward to everything that it brings. The patios

are now open and ready for summertime use. Remember if you are going outside be sure

to use sunscreen. Make sure you grab a Wellness Calendar outside of the Community Life

room for a full list of coming events.

Aberdeen Health & Rehab has been a member of the American Healthcare Association

since 2008. The Quality Award Program has been around for many years, encouraging

Healthcare Providers to make the commitment to quality. The first step in the National

Quality Award Program is the Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award. The goal of this

award level is to provide applicants with the tools and resources they

need for continuous performance improvement. Through the Bronze criteria, based on

the Organizational Profile section of the Baldrige Health Care Criteria for Performance

Excellence, members will assess their organization’s mission, vision, and key factors that

lead to success. This will provide a strong foundation for the second step—the Silver –

Achievement in Quality Award level. The next level is the Silver Award achievement in

Quality, and last is the Gold Award which is excellence in quality. Aberdeen Health &

Rehab wrote and submitted the Bronze Award application in January of 2017. On June 1st

2017, Aberdeen Health & Rehab was notified that they were a recipient of the Bronze

Award! The award ceremony will take place October 18th, 2017. We are all very excited

to be a recipient of this award and continue to strive to provide high quality care. We will

continue to advance in the American Healthcare Association Quality Award Program and

hope to be a recipient of all 3 awards.
