Background Lifeboat incidents are reported each year, resulting in injury and
in some cases fatalities. Sadly, most accidents derive from insufficient
maintenance, knowledge and training on LSA (Life Saving Appli-
cations) equipment. SOLAS - International Convention for the Safety
of Life at Sea address these concerns through minimum maintenance
and proper training requirements. Over the years, Norsafe has put
more focus on the importance of proper use of equipment through
training. Although we strive each day to make our products safer, we
recognize that insufficient knowledge is at the heart of many incidents.
Norsafe has always been at the frontline of LSA development and the
company has a 100-year old history in the lifeboat industry.
Today, Norsafe is a recognized world authority on LSA systems;
renowned for technical development, high quality and professional
maintenance.
Norsafe is an ideal partner for maintenance of lifesaving equipment, providing:

we aim to serve our clients in a professional way
with both cost and safety in mind.
Life boats and davits are usually subjected to extreme weather
conditions, such as corrosion from salt water and extreme temperature
changes. Therefore, maintenance is crucial to ensure 100% operational
capacity in case of an emergency. Norsafe provides annual and 5 year
service inspections conducted by our highly qualifi ed and certifi ed
service engineers in accordance with SOLAS requirements.
This includes• Deliveryofnewequipment.

• OperationalTraining.
• Preventivemaintenancetraining.
• Technicalsupport.
• Regularandintermediateinspections.
• Spareparts.
• Mandatoryannualand5yearlyinspections.
•Returnanddestructionofoldlifeboats.
Lack of maintenance is not only a threat to safety but it is also costly
in the long run. Typical examples of incurred costs are port detention
and platform production stop. In many cases entire LSA systems have
to be replaced due to their condition and this is both expensive and
time consuming.
There is no misalignment between maintenance and cost control.
Our objectives are clear; to deliver excellent service that ensures a
long lifespan & fully-operational LSA equipment.

UpgrAdes innovating safety Background Standards and regulations for LSA equipment has changed rapidly over the last decade. Regulations may vary substantially from vessel type
and operating location as many nations have their own legislation for operating. This is particularly applicable for the offshore & gas segment
where potential fallout of an accident is considered to be much more consequential for human life and the environment. Norsafe is a large supplier
of LSA equipment to the offshore & gas segment and we have in-depth knowledge and experience with regards to the regulation your company
operates under. Norsafe has developed many innovative safety products to meet the increased demand from regulations and customers alike.

nOrsAfe TOr mkii next generation on-load release hooks for lifeboats
As a response to industry concerns, Norsafe has undertaken an
extensive process to improve release gear for lifeboats. This targets
safety issues, especially the avoidance of a premature release.
Norsafe is proud to present this new concept; a further development
of the long proven TOR MKI hook. The latest TOR MKII hook is
substansially safer and includes safety devices required by operators
and regulators. The new hook has already been well received by Nor-
safe key customers and is probably thesafesthookonthemarket.
The TOR MKII hook has been designed specifi cally for simplicity of
use and clearly understandable operation. The yellow padlock, clearly
visible on both sides of the hook - indicates clearly that the hook is
set and release cables correctly located. The locking mechanism of the
new TOR MKII hook is such that securing pins through the hook
(as a locking device or set indicator) and free fall preventers are
not necessary.

The simulated free fall solution is an independent system that latches
on to the boat and secures it thorough 4 metal plates. This allows for
testing of the release mechanism without actually performing a free fall
drop. The simulated free fall system complies with current regulation
(SOLAS; part B, regulation 19 – “emergency training and drills”) which
states that free fall systems must be tested and released regularly.
In short, this means that theoperatordoesnothavetospendtime
andresourcesgettingthelifeboatbackintothedavit,normake
extensivepreparationsasassociatedwithstandardlifeboattesting.
The free fall lifeboat is connected to the davit with a hook on the
release bracket attached to the boat. The hook is fi rmly secured
through a bolt on the davit which holds the boat in place. To release
the lifeboat a hydraulic cylinder is pumped outwards by a manual
hydraulic pump. The cylinder lifts the aft end of the lifeboat. The hook
on the release bracket is then lifted free from the davit bolt and the
lifeboat slides down the davit (shown in images underneath).
hydraulic pumps are mounted at the helmsman seat, and should
this system fail to operate an identical and totally separate system is
installed at the aft bulkhead.
To simulate a free fall, four plates are bolted to the hooks on the
release bracket as an extension of the hooks. This allows for boat to
be lifted but prevents the boat from launching, as shown in the images
underneath. With the simulated free fall system a safe and easy test
can be conducted without having to drop the lifeboat. (shown in
images underneath).

Studies and GAP Analysis for Life Saving EquipmentNorsafe has extensive experience conducting studies and GAP
analyses on LSA equipment and regulations such as SOLAS, dNV-
OS-E406, Norsok R-002 and NMd 853, especially for corporations
operating on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and offshore in general.
All our studies are individually tailored for customer and product.
The main objective behind a GAP study is to identify misalignment
between onboard lifeboat equipment and current, upcoming and local
regulations. Norsafe performs a comprehensive analysis that enables
the operator to make informative decisions regarding their future Life
Saving equipment needs in light of regulations the operator is or will
be subjected to. Norsafe will document through academic studies
the gaps between regulations and equipment and advice on concrete
compensating actions that can be taken in order to meet new
regulations, with safety and cost in mind. Not to mention ensuring
hat the installation is not forced to shut down operations.

In collaboration with Scanmatic, Norsafe offers the NAS
(Navigation Assistance System) to its customers.
during free-fall drops in rough sea and conditions direction of the
lifeboat might vary as the boat surfaces. Smoke, fog, darkness and
limited vision might disorient the operator of his position to the
installation. It is also very diffi cult to navigate rough sea with
a traditional compass.
Traditionally, navigation systems onboard life boats do not provide
any guidance to safe escape direction after launch. The NAS brings
easy to read, visual information to the pilot, helping him choose a safe
direction away from the escape point in limited visibility conditions,
such as smoke, fog or darkness.
NAS (Navigation Assistance System) logs and locks course information
from the point of drop, alerting the operator after-drop of his current
position to the initial drop position and angle, enabling the operator
to direct the lifeboat away from the installation no matter visibility.
The NAS’ “black box functionality” logs 6 dOF angles and
accelerations at 100 hz for 1 hour from the time of life boat launch.
The logfi le is stored in none volatile memory and can be downloaded
to a PC through the USB interface for analysis.

neW reinfOrced grp seATswith 5 points safety harness
The new 5 point safety harness GRP seat was designed to meet the new safety recommen-
dations from OLF. The new seat is designed to lessen the G-force exposure and impact from
free-fall drops, reducing the risk of injury. The seat is designed in line with new average weight
recommendations per person. The seat is strongly secured to the hull and made of
reinforced composites. The new pillow has also been designed to absorb G-force impact.
cOxsWAin cHAir reduce G-force impact
The coxswain chair reduces G-force impact, is equipped with 5-point restraints and
enables secure and speedy position change from drop to coxswain (driver).
The new coxswain chair locks into two different positions: horizontally in order to reduce
G-force impact on the individual and vertically when operating the lifeboat. Changing
positions is easy and intuitive. Simply by pulling a lever the chair is released from its
locked position. The coxswain operator can sway the chair forward into driver position
and operate the lifeboat in a matter of seconds.
15
remOTe sprinkLer sYsTem
The sprinkler system pumps seawater and distributes it across the
exterior of the lifeboat. For vessels operating with, or transporting
fl ammable cargo, it is plausible that the lifeboat will be subjected
to extreme heat in emergencies. The easiest way to counter this
atmosphere is through a sprinkler system. The solution is designed
to meet dNV-OS-E406 regulations; sprinkler system should
be operational from the coxswain position.
Led LigHTening
In emergency situations the lack of lighting can be a frightening
experience and it is also diffi cult to attend to injured personnel,
especially at night. In collaboration with its customers Norsafe has
outfi tted lifeboats with Led lighting that lights up the entire lifeboat
from stern to aft. Led light technology is one of the most energy
effi cient ways of providing light and the Led lights provided by
Norsafe are powered by a supplementary on-board battery.
The Led lights can stay on continuously for one week without charging.

BOx fOr BOp acoustic release systemIn collaboration with offshore operators Norsafe has custom designed
aluminum BOP acoustic release system boxes. The aluminum box
is designed to contain BOP simulator with cable, portable command
unit and a dunkin transducer with cable drum.
The purpose of this installation is to secure equipment that enables
platform personnel to remotely close valves on the platform from
the lifeboat in the event off an emergency, where quick and decisive
evacuation is necessary.
BAckUp sTArTerSpring starters The spring starter is a mechanical way of starting up the engine
should all other safeguards fail. This is easily done by winding up
a spring attached to a handle. By pressing a button, the spring is
released and the engine is started mechanically, and no electricity/
battery is required.
Spring starters are reliable, versatile and rugged and are
extensively used with a variety of lifeboat engines.
Hydraulic startersThe hydraulic starter and the associated system provide a sparkless,
reliable method of engine starting at a wide temperature range. The
system used to support the hydraulic starter includes valves, pumps,
fi lters, a reservoir, and piston accumulators.

rudder. Whether you are mancsuvring, power steering or changing course, an accurate
readout of the rudder position will be displayed on a tricoloured three-inch display.
As the lifeboat hits the surface during free-fall drop the rudder might change position due
to the tremendous forces at work. Theoperatorwillknowinstantlywiththerudderindicator
