  • PLEASE JOIN US AS WE ‘BREAK NEW GROUND’The very notion of CDU began with a groundbreaking idea: locating a health professions university in the South Los Angeles community of Watts/Willowbrook, an area that had exploded in revolt in 1965. But with lack of access to healthcare and education cited as two of the many causes for the unrest, L.A. County “broke new ground” and incorporated the forerunner of today’s CDU: the Charles R. Drew University Post Graduate Medical School.

Five decades later, we continue to “break new ground” literally—with planned campus improvements—and academically—with our unique approach to health professions education, the “CDU Advantage.” I invite you to join us on our drive to become a mid-sized health professions university and medical school with a mission that’s more important than ever: eliminating health disparities and ensuring proper access to healthcare for all. It’s an exciting time for us, and I’d like to share a few recent developments. We broke ground in October for two campus projects: a new main entrance on 120th St., facing MLK Community Hospital, and a student center. The student center is the first in a series of initiatives to enhance the campus experience for our students.

With the leadership and support of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors, who approved $800,000 in funding, Graduate Medical Education returned to CDU for the first time in ten years, with new residencies in Family Medicine and Psychiatry. The programs began in July, with eight Family Medicine residents (and will grow to up to 24 by 2020), and six Psychiatry residents (and will grow to 24 by 2021). I can also share with you some other “groundbreaking” numbers:

    • Enrollment has topped 700 students for the first time ever.• The University conferred a record 303 degrees at our 34th Commencement Exercise, held at the Stub Hub Center in Carson this past spring.• Our FY 2017 philanthropy and fundraising efforts topped $5 million, smashing our target of $3.33 million. This was our first-ever $5-million year and,

perhaps more importantly, our upcoming campaign will be the first time we have ever set a three-year goal of $15 million.• And here’s a very good number for our students, by way of a citation for earning power: According to a college salary survey by the website

payscale.com, CDU was ranked 48th out of 1655 colleges and universities across the country for highest-paid graduates. That puts us in the top

    three percent nationally—and ahead of USC (52nd), UC-Irvine (54th), UC-Santa Barbara (56th), NYU (61st) and UCLA (73rd).

As our growth trajectory continues, I welcome all our stakeholder groups—long-time and new donors, alumni, community members and business leaders—to join us on our journey to break even more new ground. In this publication, you will find a series of events—from the stimulating policy discussion at the President’s Breakfast in February, to our signature Legacy Leaders of Healthcare Spring Gala in April, to what has become a “can’t-miss” concert in Fall, “Jazz at Drew”—all with a variety of participation levels.

Our nation faces an aging, increasingly diverse population seeking more and more medical services. At the same time, the gap between those communities with access to care and those who lack that access continues to grow. Throw in uncertainty in healthcare policy and volatility in the healthcare marketplace, and the challenge of educating and training healthcare providers for this future is daunting. However, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is uniquely prepared and positioned to do just that: produce the healthcare workforce of tomorrow—physicians, nurses and other health professionals with the requisite technical education, policy leadership and cultural understanding and sensitivity.

Your generous, tax-deductible gift will help further the education plans of hundreds of students who are committed to creating healthier communities and eliminating health disparities in the most underserved areas of this nation. Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science was a groundbreaking concept over five decades ago that became a reality that is needed more than ever today.

    Thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

DAVID M. CARLISLE | MD, PHD
