Read the following paragraph:

I was having some cash flow problems and so I asked a loan officer for a loan. He told me that I would have to talk to the bank teller to get my bank statements from both my checking account and savings account. Additionally, he wanted to hear about credit card debt, money market accounts and any other activity I had in the stock market. He would then take a look at my balance sheet. Practicing New Skills in Conversation 1. Become aware of yourself and the habits you use. Tape record/videotape yourself speaking at a presentation or while talking on the telephone. 2. Find a small portion of your day to practice a newly-learned skill. The goal is to practice the new skill daily so that you will no longer need to think about it and it will occur naturally and unconsciously in speech. Here are some ideas to get you started but ultimately find a time/place that works for you:

a. Listen to the videos again—repeat the words in the video—remember that repetition is essential to making something automatic.

b. Choose a number of words to work on each day. c. Go through a reading, circle the compound nouns and then read the paragraph. Use the

newspaper or work related materials. d. Speak with a certain person concentrating on a new skill

Remember that learning something new takes time! We can’t learn to do play the piano or learn to roller-skate well without practice. You can do it! I am cheering for you! ☺
