    Orientation 2019Be a Beaver Chompion

  • On behalf of the UMF faculty, staff, and current students, welcome to the University of Maine at Farmington. We are so glad to have you here.

As you settle into Farmington in the next few days, I encourage you to consider both what sources of strength you bring with you from your home community and the new freedoms and opportunities that await you in the coming weeks and months. College is a chance to build on your existing skills, knowledge, and interests. It can also be a time of self-reinvention, radical discovery, and world-opening. We are ready to support you: both you as you are now and the person you will become in the months ahead.

I also encourage you to draw on what you know--subjects you aced in high school, sports you have excelled in, ways of relating to others--as you begin to freely explore what you do not know. As you are getting to know the campus, the community, and what being in college is all about, try also to get comfortable with not knowing. Or to borrow a phrase from the poet John Keats, find a way to embrace “negative capability,” that ability to survive without concern even when surrounded by “uncertainties, mysteries, doubts.”

Learning anything entails the understanding that we do not already know everything. None of us do, not your fellow first-years with higher GPAs, not the seniors, not even your most brilliant professors. And we have to honor our not-knowing if we want to learn. So, when you find yourself worrying about not knowing something--whether it is how to solve an equation, close-read a poem, play an instrument, or just find your classroom--remember that, in an important sense, not knowing is what you are here for. We are here to help.

    Dr. Eric C. BrownInterim President
