What Is It?The versatile ILM Level 2 programme develops the full range of interpersonal skills and knowledge needed to be a successful Team Leader. At Level 2 learners can choose from NVQ and/or VRQ qualifications at both Award and/or Certificate level with the VRQ element being classroom-based learning, aimed at pushing the student forward and NVQ being assessment-based aimed at evaluating the level of the Student.

In order to qualify for funding students must complete both NVQ and VRQ certificate along with an integrated Functional Skills qualification.

Who Is It for?The course is aimed at practising or aspiring Team Leaders who want to learn new skills and extend their existing skills in the area of team leadership. This course is also often very useful for business owners who are looking to develop their Leadership Skills.

The ILM Level 2 Award in Team Leading and ILM Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading are qualifications specially designed to give practising or aspiring team leaders a solid foundation in their formal development as a leader.

The Award is a concise qualification designed to give learners a basic knowledge of the various roles, functions and responsibilities of a team leader and the limits of their authority and accountability. The mandatory unit in ‘Developing yourself as a team leader’ is a good starting point for team/cell leaders who are new to their roles or for aspiring leaders who wish to gain a solid understanding of the principles and practicalities of team leading.

The Certificate builds and broadens the skills and knowledge gained in the Award (please note candidates may join the Certificate directly and are not required to undertake the Award as a prerequisite). Here, practical techniques in motivating teams, plus planning and monitoring their work are exploredwithin the additional mandatory units of this larger qualification.

All learners can gain free development support for six months with ILM Trial Membership package. The ILM Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Team Leading has been designed for team leaders who have some personal autonomy and responsibility, and who collaborate with others to deliver work. The NVQ gives learners the opportunity to develop the core competences needed by team leaders in today’s dynamic business world.

ILM NVQs are assessed using evidence from the workplace. This could include observation, professional discussion, questioning/interviews/witness testimony, physical products of work (such as plans, reports, correspondence etc) or other methods allowed within the QCF. Please note simulation is not allowed.

There are no formal entry requirements however learners:

• will undertake an initial assessment to determine the appropriate NVQ level and optional units

• should normally be employed in a team leading role to gather evidence from the workplace for assessment

• who are not currently in employment may be able to join the qualification if they are able to gather evidence of recent team leading experience in a paid or voluntary capacity from within a period of three years of registration.

The ILM Level 3 Award in First Line Management, ILM Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management, and ILM Level 3 Diploma in First Line Management are qualifications that have been specially designed to give practising or aspiring first line managers a solid foundation in their formal development as a manager.

The Award is a concise qualification which gives an introduction to the basic skills, knowledge and understanding required by today’s first line manager. The mandatory unit ‘Solving Problems and Making Decisions’ is designed to develop practical techniques for tackling managerial problems and making decisions from gathering and interpreting information through to the effective communication of outcomes.

Level 3 Diploma

The Certificate provides a more comprehensive programme that builds and broadens the skills and knowledge gained in the Award (please note candidates may join the Certificate directly and are not required to undertake the Award as a prerequisite). Here organisational change is explored, giving participants a deeper understanding of this critical workplace issue and providing them with the tools to plan for and deal with organisational upheaval. The crucial skill of time management is also explored in the fourth mandatory unit for the Certificate.

The Diploma develops a very comprehensive range of management skills, providing learners with the broad body of knowledge required by a first line manager. The qualification builds on the Award and Certificate, though is more suited to the practising manager. (Please note candidates are not required to undertake either the Award or Certificate as prerequisites and may join Diploma programmes directly). The additional mandatory units cover business communication – writing for business and making presentations – creativity and innovation for the workplace as well as information gathering and analysis, and managing customer service.

The ILM Level 5 Award in Management, ILM Level 5 Certificate in Management and ILM Level 5 Diploma in Management are qualifications that have been specially designed to give practising or aspiring middle managers a solid foundation in their formal development in this role.

The Award is a concise qualification designed to develop basic middle management skills and knowledge. The mandatory unit examines organisational structure and function, the roles and responsibilities of middle managers and the effect of communication and interpersonal skills on managerial performance. The final element of the unit explores the evaluation of personal development opportunities.

The Certificate builds on and broadens the areas covered in the Award in a flexible and practical way (please note learners may join the Certificate directly and are not required to undertake the Award as a prerequisite). Here, ‘managing improvement’ is explored, covering both organisational and personal improvement. The crucial skill of ‘making a financial case’ is also examined in the third mandatory unit for the Certificate.

The Diploma develops a comprehensive range of basic middle management skills, assisting learners in gaining the knowledge required at this level. The qualification builds on the Award and Certificate, though is more suited to the practising manager. (Please note learners are not required to undertake either the Award or Certificate as prerequisites and may join Diploma programmes directly). The additional mandatory units cover ‘developing critical thinking’ – evaluating theory against reality – and ‘leading innovation and change’ – identifying opportunities for development and exploring the impact of organisational change on stakeholders

ILM NVQs are assessed using evidence from the workplace.

This could include observation, professional discussion, questioning/interviews/witness testimony, physical products of work (such as plans, reports, correspondence etc) or other methods allowed within the QCF. Please note simulation is not allowed.

There are no formal entry requirements however learners:

• will undertake an initial assessment to determine the appropriate NVQ level and optional units

• should normally be employed in a team leading role to gather evidence from the workplace for assessment

• who are not currently in employment may be able to join the qualification if they are able to gather evidence of recent middle management experience in a paid or voluntary capacity from within a period of three years of registration.

The ILM Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Management has been specifically designed for middle managers with a wide span of control and accountability for performance, in particular those with responsibility for determining resource allocation and operational methods in their department or organisation.

Learners take four mandatory units covering developing and implementing operational plans, working productively, providing leadership and direction, and planning change. They then choose from a diverse range of optional units to complete the qualification, tailoring their learning to meet their individual and organisational needs.

Is Not Having a Degree Holding You Back?At BDM, we have worked tirelessly to make sure that we are able to provide our students with the most appropriate and cost effective way of gaining a degree that is relevant to your role, within your organisation, whilst committing as little as one day per month for one year.We are finally pleased to announce that BDM has now partnered with a number of local Universities such as UCB to offer the chance gain a Business Enterprise BA (Hons) degree in just one year on the completion of a ILM Management Level 5 Diploma.

Who is this degree for?If, either, you don't have a degree and want to be fast-tracked towards promotion or you already have a degree but want a qualification that is more relevant to the role you are currently in, our programme is open to anyone who has completed a Level 5 Diploma in Management, which BDM still has the ability to provide funding for. However, we do suggest that you are employed in a mid-to-senior management position as the qualifications are largely work based.

What does the degree involve?The degree is currently comprised of 120 credits to be completed within one calendar year, attended one day per month with multiple start dates throughout the year.

Funding Information

BDM work closely with a number of government agencies and training consortiums allowing access to a variety of funding streams for training courses. This ensures that the costs of courses are kept low and where possible can be fully funded.

Some examples of current funding programmes are:

Management Apprenticeships Director Development Fund - Provides BDM with up to £1,500 of funding towards the development for directors and senior managers.

Management Apprenticeship programmes – Enables fully funded qualifications for any size businesses. Funding available for a number of apprenticeship programmers.

The Employer Ownership of Skills - Offers all employers direct access to public investment; up to£250 million over two years to design and deliver their own training solutions.

Youth Apprenticeships

Small Employer Incentive - Offers up to £1,500 payable in two stages to small firms in all industries and for youth Apprenticeships at all levels from April 2012. The incentive is part of a wider £1 billion package of support to encourage small businesses to employ young people.

Employer subsidy to employ a jobless young person From April 2012, an incentive of £2,275 will be available for small employers who employ a jobless 18-24 year old for a period of 6 months. The subsidy will support work and training placements.

Links between the incentive and subsidy We will work with Job Centre Plus to ensure that the two schemes complement each other. The Apprenticeship incentive focuses on enabling small employers to recruit new employees aged 16-24 into sustainable jobs that provide the opportunity for the young person to achieve a national recognised qualification and the work placement subsidy outlined to date covers a 6 month work placement with supporting training for 18-24 year olds.
