Did you know manufacturing is BerksCounty’s largest industry sector by economic output and by employment?Did you know that BCTC’s Engineering& Manufacturing Technology CareerPathway offers six programs in state-of-the art facilities to prepare students forhigh skill and high demand careers inmanufacturing?

Precision Manufacturing is theLifeblood of our 21st Century Society The machining industry utilizesprecision tools and equipment totransform engineers’ and designers’visions into finished products.Equipment and tools are used to shapeplastics, metals, and other materialsinto parts, molds, dies, and othercomponents used in millions ofproducts we use every day.

The Precision / ComputerizedMachining Technology (PMT/CMT)program at BCTC focuses on skills thatare in many high-demand high-techmodern manufacturing businesses inBerks County and beyond. In fact, graduates of the program often findimmediate employment after highschool with local companies.

Precision/Computerized Machining Technology

Employment OutlookAccording to the BerksCounty WorkforceDevelopment Board,Manufacturing is BerksCounty’s largest industrywith over 31,000 peoplewith average annualearnings of over $56,000per year employed inover 500 companies. A critical problem is that a large percentageof manufacturingemployees are nearingretirement age. In fact,of the 31,000 workers,54% are age 45 or older

and 25% are age 55 and older.

Because of the aging employeepopulation, the Berks CountyWorkforce Development Board isprojecting that local manufacturingemployers will need to hire at least6,000 skilled and semi-skilledreplacement workers by the end of2025. The projected shortage ofworkers with key manufacturingskills translates into job opportunitiesfor BCTC’s PMT / CMT graduates.

What Students LearnStudents begin their course ofstudy with foundational conventionalmachine tool training and progressthrough more advanced topics including Computer NumericalControl (CNC) programming andElectrical Discharge Machining(EDM). Training also includes interpretation of engineering drawings and the use of precisionmeasuring instruments.

High Skill and High Demand Leads to Immediate Employment
