Baltar Cassola Guitar Duo

They started in 2005 during their studying years in the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla y León (Salamanca, Spain).

Their repertoire includes a wide variety of styles and periods, starting from the great classical works of Mozart, Rossini, Giuliani and Sor, the renaissance and baroque period such as Dowland, Bach, Scarlatti and Pachelbel, or the modern times brought by the music of Bartok and Gnatalli. They also played several Brazilian popular masterpieces known as chorinhos with the Brazilian percussionist Fernando Chaib, in a tour called Rio de Janeiro 1020. Finally they also premiered new guitar works by Portuguese composers, such as José Peixoto and Nuno Peixoto de Pinho. Among all the dozens of concerts already made, it stands out their regular performances in France, Lisbon, Madrid, Salamanca, Oporto or Lanzarote, in many Portuguese Music Festivals and other important cultural events.

In 2012 the Duo started the project MIRRORS.

It tries to offer a new path and new sounds to their guitar duo. Their newest project juxtaposes

several Portuguese music languages, such as contemporary music, baroque or even folksong arrangements and tunes also played in a different plucked instrument known as the Portuguese guitar. In the last couple of years they toured extensively along many Portuguese cities and different countries such as Madrid, Paris, Bordeaux, Nice or Aix-en-Provence. Baltar Cassola Guitar Duo has been playing this program in guitar festivals such as the “25th International Guitar Festival of Ponferrada 2013” (Spain), “4th Guitar Festival from the Conservatório de Música of Oporto 2014 (Portugal), or even the “Quinzaine de la Langue Portugaise 2014” (University 3 of Lille, France). This same year they started to record their new album. . MIRRORS –synopsis

In this concert it becomes clear for the listener the tendency to explore and give a new sonority to the guitar universe. This program gives to the Portuguese guitar an important role in it, putting its popular origins side by side with some baroque or contemporary music. Mirrors offers to the public a selection of some of the finest pieces we can barely listen to nowadays. This program is intended to be a reflection on the multiple cultures that give to the Portuguese character its unique expression, but with no time or place assigned. In this concert we can easily travel from the 17th century brought by some Portuguese baroque sonatas, to the colorful and artistic contemporary music written for two guitars, together with the clear tone of the traditional Portuguese Guitar. We invite you to enjoy some of the expressions, images and memories of a timeless country pictured by our guitars.

About the musicians

Eduardo Baltar is graduated in guitar by the Conservatório Superior de Música de Castilla y León, in History by the University of Oporto, and has also a master degree in Musical Pedagogy by the University of Minho (Portugal).

Widely interested in the musical expressions used as an artistic intervention and a form of community awareness, he tries to match his work with several artistic expressions, such as literature, painting, dance or theatre. Therefore he works not only as a performer, but also doing arrangements, or creating several artistic projects, workshops and interdisciplinary researches all over Europe.

He played in several festivals in many different places, such as Aix-en-Provence, Bordeaux, Lanzarote, Lisbon, Lille, Los Angeles, Munich, Madrid, Nice, Oporto, Paris, Salamanca, Vibo Valentia, among other places.

He played as well with the Remix Ensemble (Casa da Música, Oporto) directed by Peter Rundel, and played solo with the Taller de Música Contemporánea of the CSMCL (Salamanca), directed by Zsolt Nagy.

In 2005 along with Tiago Cassola they created the Baltar Cassola Guitar Duo, with plenty of concerts all over and unveiling new works to the public, as well as spreading the Portuguese music for two guitars and commissioning new works to the

youngest composers. In 2013, after a large period of collection, ethno-musicological research and composition, he built up the project Voar na terra, a collection of Portuguese folk melodies for guitar, available online. He won the IX Concurso de Formação e Execução Musical of the FCRG, and the II Concurso Legato (Oporto), as well as being awarded in the 1st and 2nd International Contest Concello de Gondomar (Spain). He presented articles on musicological research topics in the 1st International Symposium of Music and Musicians of Guimarães, and the 2nd International Conference APIHM of the University Portucalense. Having a wide teaching experience in Portugal and Spain, he now teaches at the Professional Music School of Espinho (EPME, Portugal).

Tiago Cassola teaches at the Conservatório de Música of Oporto since 2010 and at the Professional Music School of Espinho (EPME).

Starting his guitar studies in the Conservatory of his Portuguese hometown, Aveiro, he then moved to Lisbon to study with Paulo Amorim and with the multi-awarded Croatian guitarist Dejan Ivanovic, before heading to Spain and Italy. He obtained his guitar graduation in the Conservatorio Superior de Salamanca (Spain) with high marks, under the guidance of the Argentinean guitarist Hugo Geller. He got then a scholarship in Italy in the Conservatorio di Musica of Perugia studying with Leonardo de Angelis. He attended several guitar master-classes with Ricardo Gallén, Joaquín Clerch, Roberto Aussel, Àlex Garrobé, Fábio Zanon among other great artists.

Along with the guitarist Eduardo Baltar, he is the co-founder of the Baltar Cassola Guitar Duo, developing within these past years many musical and artistic projects, as well as performing on dozens of concerts in Portugal, Spain and France, and premiering guitar works from Portuguese composers. He plays not only solo and duo recitals but has also played with the famous young singers Susana Gaspar, Maria Eugenia Boix and Ana Barros, as well as the Brazilian percussionist Fernando Chaib in many music festivals all over Europe.

He played soloist with the Lisbon Conservatory String Orchestra and with the Philharmonic Wind Band of Famalicão in the New Year’s Concert of 2014. He also conducts the Young Guitar Ensembles and Orchestras of the Conservatório de Música of Oporto since 2010, playing an important role both for children and adults in many cultural events around the city. He obtained his master degree in Musical Pedagogy (2012, University of Aveiro) with the dissertation “Leo Brouwer – Contributions for the guitaristic pedagogy”. He is also graduated in Portuguese and English Studies, and he now writes for the Guitarra Clássica Portuguese magazine.
