C a n C e r .

We all know someone who has lost the battle with cancer. We all fear

it could happen to us.

the fight against cancer is one of the most daunting challenges

confronting our nation today. and nowhere in the united states

is that battle raging more fiercely than right here in Kentucky.

We have the most at stake. We lead the nation in the number of

people stricken by this disease.

We can’t continue to endure the price. cancer must become a thing

of the past.

the James graham Brown cancer center at the university of

louisville is determined to make that happen.

the Brown cancer center opened in 1981 with a $12 million gift

from the James graham Brown foundation and a visionary group of

louisvillians, with the purpose to do something about the very high

cancer rates experienced by the people of Kentucky.

and we have. over the past 30 years, the Brown cancer center

has become home to some of the best scientists and physicians

anywhere – delivering many exciting breakthroughs and the highest

level clinical care. We have enjoyed monumental growth, especially

over the past decade. throughout it all, we have kept our original

goals at the heart of everything we do. We will:

> deliver the latest medical advances to our patients with

compassion and respect

> raise the standard of cancer care in our region while

teaching the next generation of providers

> generate new knowledge that helps us not just cure cancer

in patients today, but to prevent it in the next generation

> address the prevalence and impact of cancer on Kentuckians

through outreach and prevention programs

the James graham Brown cancer center shares key characteristics of excellence with other leading cancer centers around the country.

CanCer FoCusthe Brown cancer center is home to more than 200 cancer researchers and physicians, supported by scores of research fellows, lab technicians, nurse coordinators, clinical support staff and others, all working across disciplines and toward one common goal: diminishing the burden of cancer.

strong Leadershipdonald M. Miller, M.d., Ph.d., has been director of the Brown cancer center since 1999. during his tenure, the cancer center has increased its annual research funding from $300,000 in 1998 to more than $50 million in 2010.

transdisCipLinary CoLLaborationsPhysician scientists and research scientists routinely collaborate on translational research projects both in the lab and in the clinic.

WorLd CLass FaCiLitiesWith the complete renovation of all clinical areas in the Brown cancer center complete in 2009, and the opening of the clinical and translational research Building in 2010, Brown cancer center patients, physicians, and researchers have access to the most advanced equipment and laboratory space available.

institutionaL Commitmentthe James graham Brown cancer center is a top priority of the university of louisville, dedicating a lion’s share of resources to its continued growth and clinical success.

Page 5: BCC Overview

as an academic medical center, we are responsible for bringing to light new cancer treatments. the center is home to

groundbreaking clinical trials in a dynamic collaboration between some of the best physicians and researchers anywhere.

James graham Brown cancer center scientific programs focus on what is called “translational research.” simply put, this

means we are fast tracking promising research discoveries found in our labs and putting them to work helping patients as

soon as safely possible.

to get the most mileage from our resources, and to address those targets that we believe have the greatest potential to

conquer cancer, we concentrate on Five key researCh areas:

moLeCuLar targets > this area is aimed at identifying new drugs

or other substances that block cancer by interfering with the molecules

necessary for tumors to grow and progress.

struCturaL bioLogy > defining the structures and functions

of cancer-related protein and nucleic acid complexes will provide

a starting point for designing new cancer therapeutics.

tumor immunobioLogy > if we can understand the role the

immune system and inflammation play in the development and

progression of cancer, this will help us harness the immune system’s

power to develop new cancer therapies and vaccines.

deveLopmentaL bioLogy > stem cells are at the heart of this research area. cancer results from uncontrolled cell growth

and proliferation, so an understanding of the mechanics of stem cells is particularly pertinent to the discovery of new

therapies and for regulating treatment side effects and regenerating damaged tissue, too.

CanCer prevention and ControL > cancer can strike anyone at any time, but there are things we can do to make

ourselves less of a target. focusing on the interplay between biology and behavior, the cancer Prevention Program focuses

on developing more effective ways to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality, through research, education and preventive

interventions. Kentucky’s scourge — tobacco-related cancer — is a major target.

the Brown cancer center’s work in each of these areas is gaining a reputation as some of the strongest in the united states.

even more important, it is leading to new drugs and therapies that hold great promise for helping patients — discoveries such as:

> a novel type of adult human stem cell that promises to alleviate many of the ethical issues surrounding the use of these

cells in therapeutics

> a dna-based anti-cancer drug that has proven quite effective in early clinical trials

> a pioneering approach to cancer therapy that puts to work new drugs inhibiting cancer cells’ ability to use glucose

> the first tobacco-produced vaccine for human cancer

We’re proud of our achievements. But it’s what they mean to our patients that really matters: they are often among the

first in the world to have access to new therapies that have the potential to not only save their lives, but also to restore their

quality of life.

The Kentucky Robotic Oncology Network at university hospital and the James graham Brown cancer center gives our patients access to treatments available no where else in the region.

the Brown cancer center’s comprehensive clinical trials network ensures that our patients have access to emerging treatments – developed both right here and at centers around the world.

along with groundbreaking therapies, patients at the Brown

cancer center benefit from a team-focused care approach made up

of specialized physicians, clinicians and other providers — such as

our Patient navigator program, which provides support for patients

and their families in finding, organizing and utilizing the numerous

resources, treatment services and support services needed to receive

the best care possible. the team develops and treats each patient

according to a plan customized for his or her specific needs.

Just some of the considerations are the patient’s type of cancer

and the stage it is in, the patient’s lifestyle and overall health.

the center has recruited a talented group of specialists from around

the world to lead these teams. among them are hematologists/

oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiologists,

pathologists, psychiatrists and others, augmented by highly trained

oncology nurses, social workers and other supported programs.

they work in clinics organized by area of expertise including:

> Blood and Marrow transplantation

> Brain and neuro cancer

> Breast care

> gastrointestinal cancer

> genito-urinary cancer

> gynecologic oncology

> head and neck cancer

> lung cancer

> skin cancer and Melanoma

each clinic reflects the combined strength of groundbreaking

research, leading-edge technology, accomplished specialists and

exceptional collaborative care. With the continued focus on our

multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment planning and care,

we believe we are able to provide the highest quality patient

experience possible.

the James graham Brown cancer center holds three-year accreditation with commendation from the commission on cancer (coc), the group’s highest level of accreditation possible. according to the coc, only 42 percent of cancer centers in the u.s. receive three-year accreditation with commendation.

the cancer center’s Blood and Marrow transplantation program is the only program in Kentucky to receive full accreditation in all areas from the foundation for the accreditation of cellular therapy (fact). accredited programs have met rigorous standards, as defined by the leading experts in the field, and based on the latest knowledge of the field of cellular therapy product transplantation and in compliance with governmental regulations. Programs are accredited for the types of transplants they perform or the services they provide.

the James graham Brown cancer center is the first center in Kentucky to be granted a full three-year accreditation by the national accreditation Program for Breast centers (naPBc), a program administered by the american college of surgeons. accreditation by the naPBc is given only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.

obviously, cancer is a huge problem for Kentucky and one best

tackled in conjunction with strong and determined partners.

that’s why the James graham Brown cancer center team extends

far beyond our facility’s walls to sites statewide. our outreach

programs take vital health services into the community, making

sure the underserved and those in remote locations have access

to top quality care.

our partners take us to communities throughout Western Kentucky

where we are contributing much to Kentucky’s battle with cancer,

including the innovative research happening in owensboro whereby

we are turning the tables and using tobacco to cure cancer rather

than cause it.

the Kentucky cancer Program is yet another powerful ally.

the Brown cancer center administers this model network of cancer

control specialists who work to improve cancer health disparities

in Kentucky’s minority, urban and rural communities by providing

leading-edge continuing education for health professionals and

creating a regional outreach network focused on detecting and

preventing cancer. Working in collaboration with KcP, we provide

multiple detection and screening programs including Mobile

Mammography, horses and hope, head and neck cancer screenings,

and cancer prevention education programs. With 12 regional offices

and 15 district cancer councils statewide, KcP identifies cancer

problems and mobilizes communities to action.

the people of Kentucky deserve world-class cancer treatment.

no one should feel compelled to leave Kentucky to seek advanced

treatment for cancer. that’s why the university of louisville, the

community and state made a considerable investment 30 years ago

in the development of the James graham Brown cancer center.

and it’s paying off.

guided by a strategic plan emphasizing strong translational research,

the best quality treatment for our patients and by creating detection

and prevention programs, we have experienced rapid growth and are

attracting some of the best minds available to help us win this war.

We are dedicated to finding the answers to cancer. We have many

successes to prove it. and we are on the verge of many more.

as a result, the James graham Brown cancer center is emerging as

one of america’s finest cancer treatment and research institutions.

and that is something that is critical to the future health and
