Deeper In the Word

Nate Babcock, Senior Minister

Sunday Evening Fellowship This Fall “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers… And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God…” (Acts 2:42, 46-47a)

From the very beginning the church has been a community of shared worship and fellowship. This fall at BCC there will be two interconnected opportunities on Sunday evenings for you to be engaged in and growing through this kind of community.

Praise! Sunday Evening Worship Three times this fall we will gather for a different kind of worship service on Sunday evenings. These gatherings will: 1) be relaxed and informal, 2) provide opportunities for emerging leaders and students from BCC, as well as for ministry students from Impact Campus Ministries and Great Lakes Christian College, to lead out in music, preaching, and prayer, and 3) feature fresh ways of connecting with God and each other. These gatherings will be held in the fellowship hall from 6:15 to 7:15 pm on September 29, October 27, and November 24. Look forward to more information about Praise! coming your way soon.

Small Group Bible Studies

Will resume on Sunday October 6 and run through October 20, and then again from November 3 through November 17 (6:00 – 7:45 pm each evening). Our small group Bible studies this fall will be focused on discussing and applying the book of Revelation. I will be preaching from Revelation this fall, and so our small group studies will be coordinated with that sermon series. Revelation is a handbook for Christian discipleship more than it is a roadmap for the future, and our small group bible studies will help us all see how to apply what Revelation teaches to our daily lives. As always, we will begin small groups each Sunday evening with a potluck dinner and each group will also share life and prayer together. This fall teens will be integrated into small groups with adults, and there will also be a separate small group for grade school age children.

We are providing these opportunities for fellowship and worship because community matters. Community is where we connect with others in meaningful ways, as we connect more deeply with each other, we grow in our relationship with God. So, plan to be actively involved in both Praise! and our small group Bible studies this fall.

American Heritage Girls is a scouting type program for girls ages 5 – 18. There are over 50,000 members in the US and around the world in mission fields. Locally we have 15 girls ages 5 -12 (we would love some older girls also). Our troop meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from September – May (except December when we meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday). Our meetings are held in the fellowship hall and lower level classrooms of BCC from 6:30-8:00 pm. New girls are always welcome. Over the summer our troop has been busy. In June, 4 girls and 3 adults went to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Traverse City for 5 days. We met up with an AHG troop from Traverse City and camped, backpacked South Manitou Island, and explored Sleeping Bear. In July, 4 girls and 2 adults spent the day at the History Center at the Old Courthouse in Berrien

Springs working on the Our Heritage Badge. They learned about pioneer times and life also playing some games and doing crafts from that time period. In August, 9 girls, some siblings, and adults worked on Shooting Sports Badge

by learning gun safety and shooting BB guns on a range. During the fall of this year, the troop will be working on Personal

Finance Badge. The girls will be learning the basics of handling money, needs and wants, and spending, saving, and giving. Our Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser is at noon on Sunday, September 29.

We accept donations to our troop for the meal. This fundraiser provides most of our troop operating expense for the year. The Chili Cook-off in January is used to pay our Program Support

fee to American Heritage Girls, Inc. The garage sale in June supports High Adventure camping trips and other troop camping.

For more information contact Kathy Furst or Gloria Britton.

Focus on BCC’s Elders:

Roland Earnst (Interview by: Phil Brackett, Chairman of the Elders)

Q: Briefly describe the history of your faith: A: Growing up, Roland’s mother, who was raised as a Methodist, began attending a Church of Christ/Christian Church in Sumner, Illinois. Roland’s father, however, hated the church and wouldn’t have anything to do with it. He was opposed to Roland and Roger (Roland’s younger

brother) coming to their own faith. After some hesitation, Roland and Roger were eventually baptized on the same Sunday that Roland’s mother gave her membership to that Christian Church in Sumner. Eventually, Roland felt the call of the Lord to a lifetime of ministry, and despite fierce opposition from his father, Roland set out after high school to attend Cincinnati Bible Seminary to study for a life in the ministry. It was there that Roland met Judy; they married while they were both in the process of finishing degrees from the college. Since college, Roland and Judy have worked side-by-side, supporting each other through different ministries all over the Midwest. They ended up in Buchanan, around the time of the birth of their second son, and Roland took the opportunity to get a Master’s Degree from Andrews University in Communications, which has allowed him to pursue different avenues in the faith and in broadcast technology and communications throughout his life. He has worked for most of the major broadcast organizations in this area, and he ran his own video engineer-ing business for many years. Roland has now arrived in the ultimate ministry of his career, working for the ministry of the Does God Exist? website.

Q: Favorite Old Testament Book: A: Roland loves the book of Genesis, since it tells the story of the foundations of the universe and the whole of creation. As a defender of the faith, Roland has become very familiar with the Genesis creation account and loves the story of “where it all began”.

Q: Favorite New Testament Book: A: Roland loves the book of John, specifically because it begins in a manner that is similar to the beginning of the book of Genesis. Reading the first chapters of John and of Genesis, Roland likes the similarity and symmetry of the two books. He thinks that the Gospel of John feels more personal than the other synoptic gospel accounts.

Q: Describe a time when your faith grew significantly: A: When he left home against the will of his father to pursue his education at Cincinnati Bible Seminary, being on his own, Roland felt as if the foundation of his faith was being built in that hardship. While he didn’t enjoy disobeying his earthly father, he decided to obey his heavenly father in following his calling to the ministry of God’s work.

Q: Favorite Part of Being An Elder: A: Roland feels burdened by the responsibility of eldership most of the time. However, he knows that the service of God’s people and the church, to keep things going in the right direction, is an important role to fill.

Q: Any Other Message to the Congregation: A: Roland has had opportunities throughout his life in ministry to witness the dying and the deaths of congregations for many different reasons. Roland wants to warn our congregation against those things that can kill churches: a lack of solid leadership, a lack of devotion to the Bible and its message, and a lack of a sense of cooperative community. Congregations that work together, grow together, and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit are often much better off.
