6 About Birmingham City University

Welcome to a vibrant, multicultural university in the centre of the UK, with around 23,000 students and more than 2,000 staff. Our six faculties are spread across eight city campuses.

We have a long history of learning provision in Birmingham dating back to 1843. After gaining university status in 1992, we were known as the University of Central England until changing to our current name in 2007.

Birmingham City University: over 150 years of wisdom

Respect and recognitionOur reputation for practical, professionally relevant courses and excellent teaching is making us a first choice for students. According to UCAS figures, last year Birmingham City University saw the biggest rise in student applications of any UK university.

Our research work is attracting attention too, having been classed as ‘world-leading’ in the independent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008.

PartnershipsWe have built strong partnerships with industry and the professions to ensure every aspect of our courses equips you with the skills and qualifications you need in today’s job market. In fact, many of our three year undergraduate courses involve work placements, helping make you highly employable.

Make tomorrow yoursOur commitment to the future is underlined by the multi-million pound investment we’re making over the next five years. Plans include new student accommodation and a £7m City North Sports Centre, which boasts an 80-station fitness suite, an eight-court sports hall, and workout and spinning studios.

The Centre, which opened in January, offers state-of-the-art fitness training equipment and plenty of room for team sports including five-a-side football and cricket. A soon-to-be-completed all-weather pitch will add the finishing touches to the centre, which is located close to our City North Campus.

It’s a future you can be a part of. Join us, and bring your dreams with you.

Birmingham City Business School students, as well as bringing valuable additional resource to the department, also bring in fresh and new thinking, particularly in the case of new technology such as the use of e-Commerce, and the development of web pages. In addition, they bring a youthful dimension to the team and a challenge to established ways of working. Alan Oxenbury, Group Head, Standards and Systems Procurement Department, Magnox Electric

The University offered me the best opportunity to fulfil my potential in my chosen career by providing both theoretical and practical experience. The course has given me the skills not only in qualifications, but also personal development to ensure that I can be the best I can be and meet my full potential. The course and lecturers exceeded my expectations and helped me to gain the necessary qualifications needed for my future. I would encourage anyone to study here. Laura Ann France, BA (Hons) Accountancy

Everybody was really friendly and approachable, plus the Business School has a good reputation, the course was going to be varied and it wasn’t too far from home. The lecturers on the course are really willing to help, with first-hand knowledge of the subject area. This was the best three years of my life…I long to go back!Laura Conlin, BA (Hons) Marketing, Advertising and PR

22 Fees and funding

There are two main costs involved in going to university – tuition fees and living costs.

For our 2010/2011 student intake, tuition fees can be up to £3,290 (or as set by UK Government) for full-time first degrees, Higher National Diplomas and most Foundation Degrees*. In addition, we estimate that you will require approximately £6,000-£7,000 per year to cover the cost of accommodation, heating, food, books, stationery, travel and other basic living expenses.

* If you already have an equivalent level qualification, you may be charged a higher fee for your course. Visit www.bcu.ac.uk/ug-elqs for further information.

Funding for full-time studentsThe main sources are:

• Student Loans• Maintenance Grants • Special Support Grants• Bursaries

Additional grants include the Adult Dependant’s Grant, Childcare Grant, Parent’s Learning Allowance and Disabled Students’ Allowance. Student loansThese are Government loans – you repay them in instalments after completing your course once you’re earning over £15,000 a year. You could be eligible for:

• Tuition fee loan (up to £3,290 for 2010/2011 intake)

• Living expenses loan (up to £4,950 for 2010/2011 intake)

The interest on these loans is linked to inflation, so in real terms what you repay is roughly the same as you borrow.

Maintenance grantsThese are from the Government and don’t have to be repaid. You may qualify for a Maintenance Grant to help with your accommodation and other living costs. Grants of up to £2,906 are available for 2010/2011 intake and depend on your income/your household’s income.

Special support grantsThis is an alternative grant of up to £2,906 for students who are eligible for, but not necessarily receiving, means-tested state benefits (for example, if you have a disability or you are a single parent).

Eligibility is the same as for the Maintenance Grant. If you receive a Special Support Grant you will not have any amount deducted from your student loan entitlement.

BursariesWe can award students bursaries which do not need to be repaid. In 2010/11, bursaries can be up to £525 per year and are available to anyone paying a tuition fee of £3290 and receiving Maintenance of Special Support grants from the Government.

25

How do I know if I qualify for a grant or loan? You will need to apply online via Student Finance England at www.studentfinanceengland.co.uk or contact them for an application form.

They can also give you information about whether you qualify for any grants and how big a loan you’re entitled to. Any grants or loans for living costs will be paid directly into your bank or building society account, usually in three instalments.

You do not need to wait until you receive an offer of a place before you apply for financial support.

EU studentsIf you are an EU national, you can apply for a loan to cover your tuition fees. Unless you’ve been living in the UK for three years before the start of your course, you will not be eligible for support for living costs through student loans, grants or the Access to Learning Fund. International studentsThere are a number of scholarships and bursaries which may be available to students from countries outside the EU. You may also be exempted from the higher rate international fee by showing a ‘relevant connection’ with the UK or EU. For more information, see the international students section on page 32.

Funding for part-time studentsFinancial help is available towards your tuition fees and other course costs. The value depends on your personal circumstances and your course.

The main sources are:• Fee Grant (to help with tuition fees) paid directly to your college or university.

• Course Grant (to help with study costs such as books, materials and travel) paid directly to you.

You won’t have to repay Fee Grants or Course Grants.

The maximum Fee Grant you can get is based on how ‘intensive’ your course is and how long it will take to complete compared with an equivalent full-time course.

Your household income and whether you have a live-in partner or dependent children will influence the amount of grant you receive. If you’re receiving certain benefits, you will get the maximum Fee Grant and the maximum Course Grant available for your course.

To apply for the Fee Grant and Course Grant, both you and your course must be ‘eligible’. Your course must last at least one year; be a higher education course leading to a qualification such as a Certificate or Diploma of Higher Education, a HNC, HND, BA or BSc; and must not take more than twice as long to complete as the equivalent full-time course. Postgraduate courses, part-time Initial Teacher Training courses and concurrent part-time courses aren’t eligible.

You can also apply to the Access to Learning Fund.

To find out more about funding sources, visit www.direct.gov.uk/en/educationandlearning

36 Research excellence

Birmingham City University has embarked on a new era of research after being officially recognised for its world-leading work by a national survey of research excellence across the UK.

In March 2009, our research funding was more than doubled after an outstanding performance in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE-2008) which revealed that we had world-leading research in all subject areas submitted for review.

This success was followed up in August 2009 with the announcement that nine centres of research excellence would be created to build on our current research strengths and extend into key new areas. To support the initiative, we are investing an additional £3 million over three years on top of the £10 million already allocated. The expenditure allocated will help to fund 36 PhD bursaries.

The centres of research excellence cover: • Business, Innovation and Enterprise • Criminology• Design and Creative Industries • Digital Participation and Technology • Education • Fine Art• Health, Social Care and Well-Being • Low Carbon and Sustainability• Music and Performance

38 Courses

Which type of course would you like to study? You can view the undergraduate course offering in Birmingham City Business School as being on a spectrum; at one end of the spectrum you have the specialist single honours courses: Accountancy, Accounting and Finance, Marketing and Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations. In these courses you study subjects in great depth, but only one subject (or subject area) you don’t get a generalist view of the complete field of business.

At the other end of the spectrum is the generalist single honours BA Business Studies, you study every aspect of business, but you don’t study them in as great detail as you would with the specialist single honours courses.

The middle ground is held by our portfolio of joint degree courses. In these courses, you choose to study two subjects in substantial depth, but not in as great depth as you would if you were studying specialist single honours courses.

The advantage of studying two subjects is that you can look at the interface between those two areas of business and see how they interact, as well as opening up employment opportunities in two separate areas following your graduation.

Once you decide the nature of the course you are interested in, you can move on to the next section and explore further the courses we offer.

Best wishes for your future studies.

• Gain a broader perspective of business-related issues through studying two distinct fields.

• Develop skills within the context of two complementary subject areas.

• Discover the links between two business-related subjects.

• Keep your future career options open.

At Birmingham City Business School, you have an excellent choice of Joint Honours degrees, including subjects in Management, Marketing, Business and Accountancy and Finance.

Page 64: BCBS Undergraduate Courses

63

Flexibility for your futureIn a Joint Honours degree, your study time is split roughly half-and-half between two subjects (also known as subject pathways).

You can study all our Joint Honours degree courses as either a 3 year full-time programme or as a 4 year sandwich programme, including a one-year business placement.

the Common first yearThe Joint Honours degree programme has been developed to offer the flexibility of a common first year.

It allows you, at the end of your first year, to move course to any available Joint Honours degree programme or BA (Hons) Business Studies. This means you can tailor your degree programme based on your first year experience.

For example, you could enrol on the BA (Hons) Business Law and Human Resource Management course, but develop an interest in marketing following the Marketing and Business Operations module. At the end of the common first year (and subject to availability), you would be able to change to a marketing-based Joint Honours programme.

importantly, this means you:• Spend your crucial student years on a programme you really enjoy.

• Follow a programme you have already performed well at.

• Increase your career opportunities in your selected area once you graduate.

The standard first year structure is under continued review to ensure it provides an effective introductory skill set. Please note that the structure outlined below is for guidance purposes only.

Birmingham City Business School is one of only a small number of institutions granted status as a Platinum Approved learning partner by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) for its professional accountancy tuition programmes.

Recognised and valued by employers, this accolade is the highest level awarded by the ACCA. It means you study the Accountancy pathway in a professional, progressive environment.

The Joint Honours degree portfolio benefits from a practice-based learning approach which is encouraged by the common first year structure.

During your first year, you participate in an integrated business plan which stretches across several business subject areas. You gain, develop and utilise subject knowledge including finance, human resources and marketing, and apply this to a real business problem.

You and your team then ‘pitch’ your plan in front of experts from industry in the style of ‘Dragons’ Den’, and you could win £1,000 for your team to develop your business plan further during the rest of the year.

The choice and monitoring of an international share portfolio also allows you to bring financial markets to life, with a cash prize of £500 awarded to the student who makes the greatest return on their capital investment.

Why did you choose to study at the University? The University offered the course I was looking for and was at the top of its game in the areas covered by this degree. The Business School was and still is famous for its links with industry and the School of Law had just been assessed by the Law Society and had scored top marks in each of the categories.

Why did you choose to study the course you completed?I didn’t want to do a degree I would never use but I didn’t want to specialise as early as University so I decided to do a combined degree. Not only did the course I took keep multiple options open to me, it provided me with an understanding of the legal implications of my actions if I became a manager.

What did you most enjoy about the course and why?Because of the degree I took, I had lecturers from the Birmingham City Business School and the School of Law – and every single one of them had ‘real life’ experiences that they could relate to during lectures. Not only did this make lectures more interesting – it also helped me to remember the course content.

What did you most enjoy about studying and living in Birmingham and why?Birmingham is a very diverse city giving you access to pretty much anything you want to do – from Snowboarding and Rock climbing to the late night curry houses of the Balti triangle. Add to that the large student population which commands a number of deals, nightclubs open seven days a week, shops that sell course-specific books and lots of cheap student accommodation and it seems Birmingham is the perfect city to be a student in. Additionally, because of the large number of non-students, it is relatively easy to get work that will fit around university and lectures.

How has studying at Birmingham City University helped you in your career? My application to the BT graduate scheme was successful and obviously one of the prerequisites for this was the successful completion of my course which was made easier because of the way lectures are taught. During lectures we were encouraged to challenge the theories and text books, to question what we were being taught rather than simply accepting it. This made the lectures interesting and interactive and gave me the confidence to continue challenging established processes and to look for improvements wherever possible – something which has been invaluable at work.

Who is your current employer? What is your job title and what does your role involve?I am a flexible resource in the Project and Programme Management Community in BT which means that I work on projects for specific, agreed time periods and then move onto other projects in Project Management related roles. Currently I am working on two projects – as the Project Manager for rolling out internet and networking capability to a number of sites in Ireland for one of our customers and as a Project Control Manager rolling out a new operating and reporting model on one of our large Government contracts.

Key facts

The subject of intense scrutiny in recent months, and probably for years to come, it is difficult to overstate the importance of economics in understanding business strategy, behaviour and performance. This study programme offers you a strong intellectual and practical background to enable you to understand and efficiently resolve such issues faced by economists.

The Joint Honours degree portfolio benefits from a practice-based learning approach, encouraged by the common first year structure.

During your first year, you and your team put together a business plan which draws from several business subject areas, including finance, human resources and marketing.

You then ‘pitch’ your plan to a ‘Dragons’ Den’-style panel, and you could win £1,000 for your team to develop your business plan further during the rest of the year.

The choice and monitoring of an international share portfolio also allows you to bring financial markets to life, with a cash prize of £500 awarded to the best return on capital investment.

Key facts

Management is a process of forming a plan, allocating resources to implement the plan and finally measuring the outcomes of the plan.

The Management pathway first establishes a foundation of management and organisational theory and practice, and then proceeds to adopt a critical questioning approach, through exploring, analysing and evaluating key issues and challenges facing managers and organisations today. The links between theory and practice are critically examined, to help to develop strong working relationships, and so enhancing performance.

You will study the development of the management discipline by commencing with an examination of the practices of management. Later modules build on this foundation, inquiring into the theoretical models and concepts that form the academic basis of management as a field of study.
