    Meaning and PurposeAn interview is the culmination of the job or selectionprocess. Most often the interview is the most crucial part ofthe job or selection process.The term interview has been derived from the French wordenter voirthat means to see each other or to glimpse.An interview is a classic example of communication thattakes place through the process by which meanings areexchanged between people through the use of common set ofsymbols.An interview reveals the views, ideas and attitudes of the

    person being interviewed as well as the skills of theinterviewer.Both, the interviewer and the interviewee must be wellprepared for an interview.

    DIFFERENT TYPES OF INTERVIEW

    Admission interview of a candidate for admission to acourse in higher education /professional training.

    Interviews held by some companies for periodicevaluation of workers.

    Interrogation of a person by the police about somehappening.

    Job or employment interviews for the selection ofsuitable persons on the basis of their qualification andexperience.

    Important features of an interview:-

    Some essential features of an interview are:At least two participants in the event an interviewee

    and an interviewer. But in general only oneinterviewee is there and many interviewers are there.

    In an interview we generally exchange our informationbut may or may not be, the secrecy is maintained.

    Both the parties need to prepare for thecommunication event.

    There is a definite purpose, and it is known to boththe interviewer and the interviewee.

    Stages in Interview process:-

    Warm up stage: - In such stage non-verbalcommunication plays the most important role. It startswith a knock on door and asking for permission tocome in. How do we greet the interviewer or thepanel? Since there is little to say and more to act on,non- verbal communication plays the pivotal role eventhough its duration seldom exceeds the first 50 to 60seconds.

    Question Answer stage: - This stage is the most

    time consuming part because one has to face threetypes of questions:

    Generic question

    Question on bio-data or resume

    Specific subject related question

    Closing stage: - this stage should be in brief and ismarked mostly by non verbal communication

    Types Of Interview

    Structured Interview: - In a structured interview,

    the interviewer uses preset standardized questions,which are put to all the interviewees. Such interviewsare also called guided or patterned interview. Suchinterviews are useful for valid results, especially whendealing with large number of applicants.

    Unstructured interview: - In such interview, theinterviewers put rare questions. Interviewee doesmost of the talking. These types of interviews arecalled unguided or non-patterned interviews.

    Unguided interview is advantageous as a much itleads to a friendly conversation between theinterviewer and the interviewee and in the process,the latter reveals more of his desire or her desires andproblems.

    Mixed Interviews: - In general practice we usestructured and unstructured questions; this approachis called mixed interview. The structured questions

    provide a base of information that allows comparisonsbetween candidates. But in unstructured interview,questions make it more conventional and permitsgreater insights into the unique differences between

    applicants. Behavioral Interviews: - Such interviews focuses on

    a problem or a hypothetical situation that theapplicant is expected to solve. This interview

    technique has a limited scope. Evaluation is based onthe solution and approach of the applicant towards aproblem.

    Stressful interviews: - Stress interviews attempt tolearn how the applicant will respond to the workpressure. In such interviews, a series of harsh, rapid-fire questions are asked to upset the applicant.
