DININGOverall RestaurantFig Tree Café Fig Tree Café has intertwined casualPB dining on its spacious, outdoorpatio under a large Ficus tree withMediterranean cuisine. Fig Tree Caféserves largely organic, Califor-nia/Mediterranean food like smokedsalmon omelets or, on the hippy side, blue corn pancakes and whole graingranola. Johan Engman opened therestaurant in October of 2008 withthe intent to focus on organic, locallysourced ingredients. Among its mostpopular dishes are the organic, veg-gie-filled Wind ansea omelet com-prised of locally raised free-rangeeggs, and a BLT served on a croissantwith the unexpected addition ofturkey and avocado. Engman oversawthe remodeling of the formerRafaela’s Italian restaurant. The pationow features a wooden canopy andstonewall fountain, and the interiorhas been painted with Tuscan-inspired vineyard scenes.

Nick’s at the BeachThis neighborhood restaurant hasmade a name for itself by serving thebest seafood in a comfortable, casualenvironment. It’s also no stranger topress accolades - a local magazineonce rated it the top neighborhoodeatery. The sidewalk café can accom-modate up to 20 people, and theSports Bar upstairs touts a large out-door ocean-view deck and 29 - TVs.But what’s on the menu counts, too -like the tortilla-crusted mahi mahi, pastas, dinner salads, sandwichesand Chilean sea bass, a huge localfavorite. Add the banquet facilitiesand take-out service, and you’ve gotNicks, now 13 years on and nothing
in its way. Visit Nick’s at the Pier inOcean Beach, too!

Overall Service
Tower 23 Bar &Lounge/JRDNYou can actually credit the Tower’screative wine list to another establish-ment in the same hotel. It’s JRDN (or“Jordan,” for the purists who preferthe phonetic pronunciation), a veryhigh-end restaurant that swears bythe magic it performs on beef andother meats. Red wines go swimm-ingly with that kind of thing — andthat translates to a comprehensiveselection at the bar (the powers thatbe didn’t forget the whites, either).Meanwhile, the bar offers a casual yetsophisticated experience. The atmo-sphere is warm and inviting and thecrowd is hip yet mellow — everybodygets to enjoy an ocean view while sip-ping signature cocktails and nibblingon sushi.

The FisheryIn 1979, fisherman Judd Brownfounded a shellfish company in thespirit of the family members whosesepia-toned pictures line the walls. In the late 1990s, it morphed intoThe Fishery, where product sustain-ability is a company philosophy.Wherever possible, the venue pro-cures its product locally. Its har-pooned swordfish, sardines, rockcod,
shrimp and California spiny lobsterare seasonal delicacies coveted bysavvy chefs. The Fishery has earned adistinction as a beautiful PacificBeach landmark, and freshness is thehallmark of its success. A remodelbegins early next month.

You can’t drink on the beach any-more, unless you want a big fat ticket. The law, however, doesn’t say youcan’t drink near the beach – andthat’s what makes Pacific Beach ShoreClub’s locale so convenient. The flat-screen TVs are only feet from thewater to boot, as are the great HappyHour deals, goldfish races, Karaokeon Sunday , Red Bull slushies and’tater-tots.

Kono’s Surf Club CafeIf you like a little dinner with yourbreakfast, Kono’s is your place. That’sbecause nobody does potatoes likethis eatery, with cheese, bell pepperand whatever other topping you canthink of to boot. If you like a littleview with your morning meal, youcould do worse. Cross the boardwalkand sit on the modest patio that over-looks the ocean; you’ll see firsthandwhy you live in Southern California. And if you like quotes on the wall ofyour eatery, you’re in the right restau-rant as well, with a little eruditionadding to the flare of the décor. There’s a laid-back surfer vibe amid itall as well, which makes it perfect forPacific Beach and the surfer crowdthat stops off after an early morningon the waves.

Burger
Rocky’s Crown PubNothing fancy or schmancy about thisplace. Just expect a big, juicy, greatburger, the way Rocky’s has beenmaking them for centuries. One cus-tomer reported he went back afteryears away from PB and found theplace just as awesome as before heleft; another said Rocky’s is the rea-son he’s no longer a vegetarian. A lotof it has to do with the bun; the thingsare so fresh and warm they fall apartin your hands. The bar may be on thesmallish side, but a cold beer and acheeseburger make up the best mealin the history of the universe — so thebar doesn’t really need to be muchlarger, now, does it?

Bare Back GrillThose aren’t manhole covers on top ofyour plate, you big silly. Those are thetwo giant organic beef patties thatcome with the Bare Big & Dirty, thecentral jewel in the Bare Back Grill’samply adorned crown. And that’s nota piece of driftwood sitting on yourplacemat, you big silly again. It’s themenu, hand-cut and laminated byBare Back co-owner P.J. Lamont him-self. Lamont is one of a trio of NewZealanders who built a lot of this placefrom the ground up - but that was fineby them, because the final product wasthat much more genuine. They touttheir lighter dishes like chicken and fishsandwiches with the same enthusiasmthey do their beer and wine and burgers- they even serve beet root as one oftheir gazillion toppings on the latter.

Burrito
Margo’s Mexican Grill Margo’s is a family-run restaurantthat opened in 2006 and prides itselfon its original Southern Californiaburrito – with its own added twist ofcourse. A meal at Margo’s is not thesame as grabbing a burrito – rather,it’s partaking in the comfortableatmosphere of a family home. Checkout Margo’s website for happy hourinformation and free coupons.
Margo’s Mexican Grill 2015 Garnet Ave. (858) 581-1408www.margosmexicangrill.com
Taco SurfThe burrito is to fast Mexican cuisinewhat the hamburger is to the unedu-cated American palate. Each item isincredibly tasty when it’s done right— and in the case of the former, TacoSurf has it knocked. There’s not much
to the decor of the place other than apick-up counter and a few smalltables — but the ceiling is lined withsome sweet classic surfboards to fuelthe local flavor. The burritos, tacosand fajitas are big and fat to boot, andyou get to experiment with a massivechoice of toppings. You reportedlycan’t go wrong with the Californiaburrito, topped with hashed browns.

Chinese Restaurant
China InnHow this place charges almost noth-ing for its food and at the same timemaintains its flashy decor is beyondus. The funksters that populate thisplace, young and usually without a lotof money, can expect to let go of lessthan $10 for generous helpings ofChinese staples such as egg foo yong, chow mein, chop suey and variationson chicken and beef dishes (prices forthe Imperial Lobster and PekingDuck are somewhat higher). If youhave even less to spend, you’re wel-come to spend time at the full bar —cocktails, like the rest of the fare, areanything but pricey.

Filippi’s Pizza GrottoIn name, Filippi’s has been in SanDiego since 1950, which makes it olderthan most of you. The thing is, it didn’tstart out as a pizza restaurant at all. Itsorigins were in Little Italy, where Vin-cent dePhilippis and Madeleine Ste-fani ran a deli grocery — the couple’sbusiness savvy fed on itself until Filip-pi’s pizza took hold. Fifteen deliciouspizza entries, with mountains of thetraditional toppings, spearhead amenu that includes lasagna, ravioli, spaghetti, soups, salads and subs. Ifyou’re not satisfied with that, you canalways go back for more somewhereelse. Filippi’s has locations fromTemecula to Chula Vista.

Woodstock’s PizzaWoodstock’s Pizza has been makingits mark in college towns across Cali-fornia for more than two decades, andthis year Pacific Beach finally got itsown location for families and studentsto enjoy. Here, the secret really is inthe sauce, which is baked into thefolded crust for a spicy kick from yourfirst bite to your last. Founders Chuck
Woodstock and Mike Chew commit-ted early on to using only fresh doughand piling on more toppings thantheir competitors. They also estab-lished a family friendly environment, where parents can enjoy an adult bev-erage and watch sporting events onlarge-screen TVs while their childrendig into the gooey slices of pie.

If you don’t, youmay wait a while on the area’s mostcomprehensive Greek menu, whichincludes terrific gyros, souvlaki, moussaka and no fewer than 1 milliondesserts. The three-room decor istasteful yet upscale and reflects aGreek islands motif. The cuisine isshaped by simplicity and spawned byingenuity. Latitude 32William Walker opened Latitude 32on Cass Street 14 years ago aftermanaging Cass Street Bar & Grill fornine years. Walker intended Latitude32, named after the latitude in whichSan Diego falls, to resemble the sortof English pub that sits on everyneighborhood block in England, which originated as a public housewhere men would meet to discusspolitics, business and women. Morethan a dozen English and Irishmenhave made the Cass Street pub theirhome, which they visit every day fora drink or two and to hang out by thejukebox. The pub also took on anIrish character on its own accord.Walker casually hung an Irish flag;the sign and carpets are, by chance, green and so Walker eventuallysealed the deal by adding a fewShamrocks to the sign. The pubcaters to singles or couples seeking areasonably priced dinner – not just abowl of chili. The serendipitous Irishflag also sparked a collection of flagsafter a donation and now more than60 flags from around the world hangfrom the ceiling. The only stipulationis that the flags must be purchasedfrom their place of origin.
