Be careful who you get to do the job, according to Len Friesen, owner of Air-o-Vac Ltd.“There are no government standards or regulations. Anybody can get into the business,
no matter what their qualifications or equipment. We’ve been in business since 1974 and have a reputation as one of the best companies in the province.”
There are a few questions you should ask the duct cleaning service before hiring them. “You’ll want to know if the vacuum unit they use is portable or truck mounted, and how
they are going to loosen the materials in the ducts,” Friesen said.Both these operations must take place if the ducts are going to be cleaned properly. Many
companies use brushes to loosen the dirt, but, Friesen says that is not the most effective way.“All the brushes were developed in Europe where the ducts are round,” he said. “North
American ducts are rectangle, so round brushes don’t reach the corners.”Air-o-Vac performs this operation using a special, pressure driven octopus tool with
tentacles that reach every part of the duct. Then they employ a rotary backsweep that uses 230 PSI of air pressure to drive the loosened debris back to a powerful, direct turbine vacuum.
“We use a truck mounted vacuum unit that has a rating of 16,000 cubic feet per minute. Portable units just don’t have the power to do the job properly.”
