Description of countries
Germany (Article by: redmadness7, dimtsal)
Germany, officially the Federal Republic of
Germany, is a federal parliamentary republic in
west-central Europe. The country consists of 16
states, and its capital and largest city is Berlin.
Germany covers an area of 357,021 square
kilometers and has a largely temperate seasonal
climate. With 81.8 million inhabitants, it is the most
populous member state in the European Union.
Germany is one of the major political and economic
powers of the European continent and a historic
leader in many theoretical and technical fields.
A region named Germania, inhabited by several
Germanic peoples, was documented before AD 100.
During the Migration Period, the Germanic tribes
expanded southward and established successor
kingdoms throughout much of Europe. Beginning in
the 10th century, German territories formed a central
part of the Holy Roman Empire. During the 16th
century, northern German regions became the centre
of the Protestant Reformation while southern and
western parts remained dominated by Roman
Catholic denominations, with the two factions
clashing in the Thirty Years' War, marking the
beginning of the Catholic–Protestant divide that has
characterized German society ever since. Occupied
during the Napoleonic Wars, the rise of Pan-
Germanism inside the German Confederation
resulted in the unification of most of the German
states in 1871 into the German Empire, which was
Prussian dominated.
After the German Revolution of 1918–1919 and the
subsequent military surrender in World War I, the
Empire was replaced by the parliamentary Weimar
Republic in 1918, and some of its territory
partitioned in the Treaty of Versailles. Despite its
lead in many scientific and artistic fields at this time,
amidst the Great Depression, the Third Reich was
proclaimed in 1933. The latter period was marked by
fascism and World War II. After 1945, Germany
was divided by allied occupation, and evolved into
two states, East Germany and West Germany. In
1990 the country was reunified.
Germany was a founding member of the European
Community in 1957, which became the EU in 1993.
It is part of the Schengen Area and since 1999 a
member of the euro area. Germany is member of the
United Nations, NATO, the G8, the G20, the OECD
and the Council of Europe, and took a non-
permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the
2011–2012 term.
Germany has the world's fourth largest economy by
nominal GDP and the fifth largest by purchasing
power parity. Germany is the third largest exporter
and third largest importer of goods. The country has
developed a very high standard of living and features
a comprehensive system of social security; the
country has the world's oldest universal health care
system. Germany has been the home of many
influential philosophers, music composers, scientists
and inventors, and is known for its cultural and
political history.
The German national basketball team represents
Germany in international competitions and lies to
the 13th place in the FIBA Ranking system. Their
biggest successes are the victory in the European
Championship of 1993 at home in Germany, the
silver medal in the 2005 European Championships
and the bronze medal in the 2002 FIBA World
Championship.
Bballzone Time 4
The team is the successor of the West Germany
national basketball team, the basketball side that
represented West Germany in international
competition. Between 1955 and 1973, Germany
temporarily competed with an East German national
basketball team as well.
Until the German reunification in 1990, the team
played as the West Germany national basketball
team. (Basketball was not a popular sport in East
Germany). In decades of competitive basketball,
West Germany never had much success, partly also
because in that time, the NBA made it near-
impossible for German internationals to play on both
their NBA teams and the national team. For this
reason, important players like Detlef Schrempf, Uwe
Blab or Christian Welp often were unavailable in big
tournaments.
The win of the 1993 European Championship at
home in Germany, thanks to superb clutch play of
tournament MVP Welp (who had returned from the
USA), came totally unexpected. The team won the
election to "Team of the Year" by the German press.
There was a huge wave of enthusiasm, but arguably
due to lack of infrastructure and professionalism,
tangible results were rare. German basketball stayed
in the shadows, the next generation of youth
shunning the native league while being glued to the
NBA with Michael Jordan. The national team never
came close to repeat the success.
But then, German basketball got a lucky break when
a lanky youth named Dirk Nowitzki tried his luck
with the Dallas Mavericks and became a superstar.
He created new enthusiasm for basketball in
Germany, and in his slipstream, the national team
had a renaissance.
In 2001, Germany played Turkey and was one
second away from the final, when Turkey nailed a
buzzer beater to send the game into overtime.
Turkey won, and demoralized Germany lost the
third-place match and ended fourth.
However, success at last came in 2002, when
Nowitzki inspired Germany to win the bronze medal
in the 2002 World Championships. Nowitzki was
also named MVP of that tourney.
One year later, however, the team suffered its worst
setback in years. In the Eurobasket 2003, which was
also the qualifier for the 2004 Olympic Games, the
talented, but inexperienced team blundered through a
tournament, blowing late-game leads with appalling
anti-clutch play. Germany was eliminated early and
failed to qualify for the Olympics.
Before the Eurobasket 2005 expectations were not
too high. The German roster was depleted by injury,
and remembering the disaster of two years ago,
nobody dared to dream of a medal. However, an
inspired Dirk Nowitzki powered the team into the
finals, eliminating favourites like Spain and Slovenia
on its way. In the finals the team was blown out by
Greece, but Nowitzki was named MVP again, and
the team won the election to "Team of the Year" by
the German press again.
In the 2006 World Championship in Saitama,
Germany won most of its first-round matches, only
losing to Spain. In the knock-out phase, Germany
fought a tough match versus underdogs Nigeria,
ending in a 78–77 win when Nigerian star Ime
Udoka missed a last-second layup. In the quarter-
finals, Germany played top favorite USA, and
managed to play an excellent first half, trailing only
39–41. However, led by Carmelo Anthony, USA
outplayed Germany 20–8 in the third quarter and
won 65–85. In the consolation round, Germany lost
73–75 against France, losing a lead in the last 18
seconds with two turnovers.
Germany qualified for the Summer Olympics 2008
in Beijing, by taking the final spot with the third
place in the qualification tournament in Athens,
Greece.
In Germany, professional basketball is known for
developing players whose parents or grandparents
are immigrants. The national team routinely uses
many players who have family roots in Africa,
Eastern Europe, United States or others, but have
grown up in Germany, speak fluent German and are
native Germans by law. The last point is especially
important, as the new FIBA rules prevent the use of
more than one "naturalized" citizen per country.
However, the most famous German players are Dirk
Nowitzki, Chris Kaman and Detlef Schrempf, all of
them with a remarkable career in the NBA.
Bballzone Time 5
The German community in Bballzone is consisting 2
divisions (3 leagues), with a total of 51 clubs and it
is a low activity community so far.
Deutschland.1.1 started at Season 7 and the most
successful teams are "stunde des siegers" and
"KRAFTWERK SAAR" with 6 titles each.
In the World League the best German teams, are
playing in the World League's 4th division.
The highest sponsored team in German leagues is
also the team "BC Bayern" which is getting 64132
Eu.
The best German player is Derick Diermissen (PF,
214cm, 30y.) who is playing for "BC Edwis" in
Lietuva.2.1 at the moment and his overall rating is
306.
The best German player who is playing in German
leagues is Walter Lukenda (SF, 205cm, 29y.) who
is playing for "stunde des siegers" in
Deutschland.1.1 at the moment and his overall rating
is 277.
The most well-paid German player is Stefan
Gronimus (SG, 193cm, 26y.) with an overall rating
of 252 by getting a salary of 24565 Eu, and is
playing for the club "Spinazza" in Italia.1.1.
We had the opportunity to have a talk with
TheTruth − the manager of "Berlin
WallBreakers", which are the most recent
champions Deutschland.1.1, twice in a row.
redmadness7: Hello. Please introduce yourself.
TheTruth: Hello, my name is Michael, I'm from
Berlin and I like traveling, basketball, watching
movies and photography.
redmadness7: How did you start playing this
manager game?
TheTruth: I found this game via Google. I was
looking for a good online basketball manager, tried
a lot and decided that bballzone is the best for me.
redmadness7: What do you think about this
manager game?
TheTruth: I like the daily games, the opportunity to
watch the games live, the chance to compete with
managers around the world. I think the skill set of
the players is simple and a good fit. The chance to
see all this stats is also great. But for me the biggest
strength of this game are the makers. There is so
much development and work they put in. And this
together with a good communication via mails,
forum etc. I don't like the balance between the
countries with many managers and the "smaller"
ones. It makes no sense for me to play in the German
final in front of 1000 people if I can get 2-3 times
more in a normal 4(!) World League season game.
And it makes hard to compete.
redmadness7: Tell us something about your team
and your goals for the future.
TheTruth: The Berlin WallBreakers won the German
championship last season way ahead of the plan. I
would like to play in the 2nd World League in 5
seasons from now. I want to reach this goal with self
developed players.
redmadness7: Do you play basketball in your free
time? Is basketball your favourite sport?
TheTruth: Basketball is my favourite sport, I play it
since almost 20 years and started some coaching
too.
redmadness7: Which is your favourite team and
who is your favourite player?
TheTruth: My favourite team is of course my
hometown team, Alba Berlin, and I'm a fan of the
Boston Celtics since the last days of Larry Legend.
Larry was my favourite player, nowadays it is Dirk
cause he is not only a great player, he is a real nice
guy too.
redmadness7: Thank you and good luck.
TheTruth: Thank you for all your work you put into
your paper, I read them regularly. Cheers Michael!

Jokes about basketball (Article by: redmadness7)
Q: Why did the basketball player go to jail?
A: Because he shot the ball!
St. Peter and Satan were having an argument one
day about basketball. Satan proposed a game to be
played on neutral grounds between a select team
from the heavenly host and his own hand-picked
boys.
"Very well," said the gatekeeper of Heaven. "But
you realize, I hope, that we've got all the good
players and the best coaches."
"I know, and that's all right," Satan answered
unperturbed. "We've got all the refs."
Rasheed Wallace approaches the referee and goes:
I was just wondering, is there a penalty for thinking?
The ref goes, ahem, no.
Rasheed says, well I think you're the biggest a**hole
I've EVER seen.
Funny Quotes
"I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money,
money, money. I just want to play the game, drink
Pepsi, wear Reebok."
Shaq O'Neal
"You can say something to popes, kings and
presidents, but you can't talk to officials. In the next
war they ought to give everyone a whistle."
Abe Lemmons
"If you make every game a life and death
proposition, you're going to have problems. For one
thing, you'll be dead a lot."
Dean Smith
"The secret is to have eight great players and four
others who will cheer like crazy."
Jerry Tarkanian
"I believe in higher education. You know, 6'8", 6'9",
6'10"."
