Joey Yap’s BaZi Proles series of books comprises 10 individual titles that will reveal your personal, social and work masks you naturally exhibit in life.

Each BaZi Prole reveals a person’s self-image which shows how the individual considers themselves consciously and unconsciously. A person’s self-image determines how he/she sees the world, and how they respond to it. How a person sees the world ultimately determines what makes them happy and what success means to them. Every individual is dierent. Learn to see the world through the lens of 10 dierent proles!

Without achievements, life would not be meaningful. Achievements can come from social, intimate and work relationships in life. The BaZi Proles also reveal your work mask, which shows your natural tendencies and responses when at work. The Intimate and Social subtypes of your prole show how you modify your behaviour when in a relationship or when you are alone. This book will also help you understand how a person modies their basic nature when under extreme pressure.

Each prole can be at dierent states ranging from healthy to unhealthy.

By learning about your BaZi Prole you become AWARE of your strengths and weaknesses and begin the process of positive CHANGE.

Awareness is the rst step for change and positive life transformation. With awareness comes realization. With realization – we discover ourselves.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever experienced dealing with someone difficult and thought, He is so talented, but too bad he is impossible to work with, or She is a genius but too bad she can’t get along with anyone? It is disappointing to know that such people will never reach their full potential because they do not know their strengths and weaknesses. They don’t understand others, and neither do they seem to understand themselves.

But what if that person is YOU – and you just don’t know it?

Who you are determines your perception towards others. Who you are determines the angle or perspective from which you view the world. What people see is greatly influenced or perhaps even controlled by their self-image and their identity. Give it a test right now – people in the same room as you will see the exact things, issues, events, ideas and other people that you see - in a totally different way.

Why?

Well, because of their unique identity – their LENS with which they view life. This LENS is the subject of the third level in my BaZi Profiling™ series of books – known as the Ten BaZi Profiles.

Your personality comes through to others when you work with others, when you talk about others, when you are in a relationship with others or perhaps when you are just interacting with others. But it takes time for us get to know people, to mingle with them and learn things that we can’t learn through observation alone.

BaZi Profiles offers us the quickest way to look through the lens of others or even our own, clearly. Simply put, the only way to change how we view life is to change who we are on the inside.

Every human being has a unique BaZi Profile. This Profile represents our personal frame of reference that consists of our attitudes, assumptions and expectations concerning ourselves, other people and life. This unique set of factors determines whether we are optimistic of

pessimistic, happy or sad, jovial or gloomy, trusting or suspicious, friendly or conservative, courageous or shy, patient or temperamental, logical or emotional. These factors colour how we see life as well as how we influence or are influenced by others.

The BaZi Profiles: The Roles You Play in the World

My BaZi Profiling series of books are based on my BaZi Personality Profiling™ System, which I’ve developed based on an ancient, time-tested system of Chinese Astrology known as BaZi 八字. I’ve synthesized the entire system of BaZi into a simple and direct format that enables us to directly analyze a person’s personality and behavior at three different levels, based simply on his or her date of birth. And all this is done without the need for any technical knowledge of Astrology.

Too many people are only familiar with the “12 Animal Year Signs” type of Chinese Astrology. But the true form of character traits in Chinese Astrology stems from a complex interplay of all the factors in a BaZi chart, and not just the Year of Birth. This is because in BaZi Profiling™ there is actually a combination of 500 different types of personality models!

Of course, delving into the full system of BaZi in great depth can be a tad bit daunting. That is why I’ve endeavored to present the system in an extremely simple, easy-to-understand format to enable general enthusiasts to immediately utilize BaZi Profiling™ to understand themselves and motivate, inspire and transform others through understanding their profiles.

My first two series of books:

1. The BaZi Profiling: 10 Day Masters; and 2. BaZi Profiling: 5 Structures;

cover the first two levels of my BaZi Profiling™ System. To get a concise and clear idea of the full picture, refer to the following chart:

5 Structures (Level 2)

How You Approach the World – The Structure reveals your personality in relation to others. In essence, your BaZi Structure shows you your modus operandi – why you behave the way you do, and what attitudes you

project in life.

10 Profiles (Level 3)

What You Do – The Profile reveals your individual lifestyle. It helps you understand what you do in

the world, and how your actions are manifested. Your BaZi Profile explains your ‘style’ of operation in life. It is about the work, intimate and social masks that you wear to function as a unique individual.

The book you are holding in your hands belongs to the BaZi Profiling: 10 Profiles series, the Profiles being the third level of BaZi Profiling.

If you don’t know what your BaZi chart or Profile is, don’t worry. You can log on to my website at http://www.baziprofiling.com/profile to plot your chart and find out your Profile instantly.

Be Yourself, Only Better

We all know that our attitude is what MAKES or UNMAKES us. It is really not the circumstances, the bank account and the conditions of our birth that shape our life. We have complete control over our attitudes. Whether our outlook in life is positive or negative, expectant or reluctant, receptive or repulsive, open or closed is completely our choice.

I call this being at the “HEALTHY” or “UNHEALTHY” states of our BaZi Profile.

When your Profile is functioning at a healthy level, you exert a more positive attitude or reveal a more positive side of your BaZi Profile. When you are functioning at an unhealthy state, you tend to exert a more negative side of your Profile. It is important to clarify here that the level of ‘healthiness’ of a Profile has nothing to do with a person’s actual physical health condition. “Healthy” or “Unhealthy” is a term I use to describe the states of a BaZi Profile where healthy means it is in a positive state and unhealthy means it is in a negative state.

Do take note that the Profile of every person will fluctuate between the levels of healthy and unhealthy throughout his or her life. The degree of this fluctuation depends on some extent the time, events and circumstances in life as well as influences from other people. But here’s a secret – you can, BY CHOICE – choose to behave at the ‘healthy’ state of your Profile.

It’s all about being YOU, but only BETTER.

It is amazing how two individuals of the same BaZi Profile can still be so different. This is because one may be functioning at a healthy level while the other is functioning at an unhealthy level. So make a conscious CHOICE to be better, according to your personal profile. Change is easy as you are only being yourself (but in a positive state).

Page 17: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

Life Transformation – Designing Your Destiny

What is it that shapes our attitudes? It’s our character. And how can we change something like our character if we don’t know what our character is? That’s why it is essential to first begin by being aware of your PROFILE.

I’m sure you’ve met or even known people who are their own ‘worst enemy.’ They always, for some reason, manage to sabotage themselves when success (in the form of a relationship or a dream job, for example) is just within reach.

Who we are – our self-image – can restrict or expand our ability to achieve success in life. A person with an unhealthy self-image or at what I call the “unhealthy levels of their BaZi Profile” will not achieve sustainable success in life because he will eventually bring himself down to the level of his own innate expectations as permissible by the ‘health level’ of his Profile.

Isn’t it strange that human nature seems to endow all of us with the natural ability and instincts to size up or judge everyone else on earth except for ourselves?

Many people know that for things to change, they first need to change themselves. But how can they change, when they don’t know WHAT to change? That is why all change – begins with SELF-AWARENESS.

Page 18: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

17

This means the person you need to first get to know is YOURSELF. Many experts on relationship will say – you’ve got to be your own best friend first in order to improve yourself and have better relationships with others. True. But how do you ‘become best friends’ with someone you don’t now or you don’t even like? You simply can’t!

Hence the purpose of BaZi Profiles is to help you understand YOURSELF.

If we ask ourselves (honestly) to give a kick in the butt to that ONE person who got us into all our troubles and emotional pain in life, I think we will find ourselves rather sore by now.

Take a look around: the people who often complain about difficulties in work or in relationships are often looking at everyone else but themselves to explain the problem.

With AWARENESS of ourselves – we understand and clearly see WHO we are. When we understand who we are we can come to the next stage – and that’s REALIZATION.

We will begin to realize that the true source many of our problems are ourselves. We are the problem. Our mentalities, expectations, reservations, attitudes and habits form the biggest challenges and obstacles to our own success!

BaZi Profiling describes accurately our inner motives and habitual responses that greatly influence our individual character and molds and shapes our destiny. It allows us to diagnose how we function on the inside, and how we present ourselves on the outside.

Knowing What to Do… and Doing It

Everything you’ve ever experienced, good or bad is attributed to who you are. Your Profile is your lens to the outside world.

The printout of your Profile chart from my website, as mentioned earlier, will indicate clearly your Main Profile as well as its complementary side – that is, your Sub Profile (or Secondary Profile).

Page 19: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

18

The Main Profile shows your primary role in life while your Sub Profile tells you your secondary role. Both profiles are equally important as human beings are complex creatures. We play different roles in different circumstances and environments in life. Who we are at work can be totally different from who we are at home.

In this book, you will also see sections describing your Intimate Subtype and Social Subtype.

Intimate Subtype describes your relationship mask - how you respond, react and behave in a relationship. Your Social Subtype describes your social mask – how you behave with close friends and in the world at large.

There is also a section describing your Hidden Nature. A person’s hidden nature relates to what is on the inside. What subtly drives and motivates you to do the things you do and behave the way you do? Some of these hidden attributes may be aspects or traits that you aren’t even consciously aware of.

You will also discover how your Profile operates in your career, and while under pressure. Learn the types of jobs that are easiest for your Profile to pursue. Discover what kinds of industries or disciplines towards which you’re naturally inclined. And more importantly, learn how to become more effective in your work. To do this we will also discuss your profile’s leadership style and what kind of skills will need to acquire to enable you to become more influential as a leader.

One Profile Fits All?

Human beings are multifaceted and complex. It is impossible that any one person has only ONE Profile that defines their entire life. Most people have multiple roles, and hence will the need to know his or her Main, Secondary, Social and Intimate profiles.

You do also need to bear in mind that this book shows you the traits of a Profile in general, and doesn’t take into account the particularities of your entire BaZi chart.

19

If you find that you are living your life at the “unhealthy” state of your BaZi Profile, you will need to take conscious steps to initiate a change. This book may be used as a guide.

However if the DIY method is not effective enough for you, I will recommend that you engage one of my BaZi Personality Profiling ™ life coaches to help you. A one-on-one coaching session will do two things: 1. Help you better understand your Profile; and 2. Help you plan a course of action to make a transformation for the better. Let us help you maximize the strengths of YOUR profile so that you can be a better you.

And perhaps if you’d like to take this subject further and help others – I would suggest taking one of my BaZi Profiling™ workshops that are offered around the world. Learn how to decode BaZi Profiles and solve PEOPLE problems. I call this PEOPLE-knowledge. Or perhaps you simply want to know more about people so that you could choose friends wisely and manage employees better. Attending one of our live workshops would serve any one of these purposes.

BaZi Profiling™ is a study that is designed to helps us understand ourselves better and make informed decisions, and ultimately, enables us to shape our life for the better.

Your best investment in life is yourself. Once you activate the strengths of your BaZi Profile, you will begin to walk on the Path of Least Resistance to Success!

Three Levels of BaZi Profiling In BaZi Profiling, there are three levels that reflect three different stages of a person’s personal nature and character structure.

Level 1 – The Day Master The Day Master in a nutshell is the BASIC YOU. The inborn personality. It is your essential character. It answers the basic question “WHO AM I”. There are ten basic personality profiles – the TEN Day Masters – each with its unique set of personality traits, likes and dislikes.

Level 2 – The StructureThe Structure is your behavior and attitude – in other words, how you use your personality. It expands on the Day Master (Level 1). The structure reveals your natural tendencies in life – are you more controlling, more of a creator, supporter, thinker or connector? Each of the Ten Day Masters express themselves differently through the FIVE Structures. Why do we do the things we do? Why do we like the things we like? – The answers are in our BaZi STRUCTURE.

The Profile reveals your unique abilities and skills, the masks that you consciously and unconsciously “put on” as you approach and navigate the world. Your Profile speaks of your ROLES in life. There are TEN roles – or Ten BaZi Profiles. Everyone plays a different role.

What makes you happy and what does success mean to you is different to somebody else. Your sense of achievement and sense of purpose in life is unique to your Profile. Your Profile will reveal your unique style.

The path of least resistence to your success and wealth can only be accessed once you get into your “flow.” Your BaZi Profile reveals how you can get FLOW. It will show you your patterns in work, relationship and social settings. Being AWARE of these patterns is your first step to positive Life Transformation.

INTRODUCTION

What is known as the Direct Officer Structure (正官) in BaZi is called the Diplomat Profile. As evident in the name, Diplomat Profile folks are righteous and moral, and they are very law-abiding people who tend to toe the line. They tend to present a very proper demeanour. Diplomat Profiles don’t like to stand out in a crowd, or be marked out as different in any way. Therefore, they tend to be unassuming in their presence and will choose to blend in to the crowd.

The Diplomat Profile is very conscious of what others think, and eager to keep the peace and maintain the “balance of the force”, so to speak. They tend to suppress their own agendas in order to be a diplomat. Healthy Diplomat Profiles are serene, peaceful, and gently-assertive, with the ability to project a warm and calming vibe into the environment. They are often meticulous workers, great group leaders, and solid friends.

Page 27: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

26

Diplomat Profiles are also gracious and polite, and will rarely be the types who act out in public or reveal unpleasant and unwanted emotions. They try to emphasise the positive and focus on creating unity. On the flip side, however, they can often subsume their own interests and opinions in order to “keep the peace”, thereby appearing to lack a backbone. They may also do this so often that they begin to lack self esteem, and will choose to retreat in times of conflict and be only concerned with keeping a low profile. Diplomat Profiles can’t handle last-minute changes.

The 10 Profiles can be divided into two groups: Yin, and Yang. The Diplomat Profile falls under Yin. Diplomats tend to retreat from people because so much of their life depends on pleasing others – thus, human interaction starts to become tense and fraught after awhile. When healthy, they simply need time away to recharge and recuperate, and prefer solitude. The Diplomat are homebodies who would rather spend some quiet time indoors than be in the thick of things with lots of other people.

Their “pull” factors - Diplomat Profiles are motivated by:

• The ability to have unity and create harmony

• Having things in working order

• Emphasising the positive

• Avoiding conflicts and agitation

• Being able to preserve the natural essence and order of things

Their “push” factors – Diplomat Profiles are demotivated by:

• Conflicts

• Being cut off from others

• Being angry or disturbed

• Having their routine disrupted

• Having to be emotionally uncomfortable

• Being forced to face unpleasant realities

32

Easy-goingLaid-back and relaxed

Diplomat Profiles are quite often very popular. They are loveable types whom others often like because they are instinctively aware of how to please others, and are not selfish. Part of their appeal lies in their patience and tolerance. They don’t operate on their own timelines, demanding that everyone else should adhere to it. Diplomats are always one step ahead, thinking about other people and their circumstances.

They are very good at being steady, calm, and consistent in their work. Diplomat Profiles respect timelines and deadlines and create a procedure or schedule earlier on before they start. They do this so that everyone has ample time to do what they need to do without any rush. If they need to supervise someone else, they tend to hold very relaxed reigns and dislike having to push or prod someone to get their job done. Because they’re responsible, they assume that others often are and hold them up to those same standards.

Diplomat Profiles don’t really hit the fan or go mad with rage when there are delays or problems that crop up. While they dislike last-minute changes and get very flustered, they can absorb the tension brought about by delays. Their generally tolerant attitude makes it easy for others to discuss problems with them. They tend to have a reassuring and patient air that doesn’t exclude or single any one out.

Page 35: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

34

Rules-orientedCan’t bend the law

One of the most distinctive characteristics of the Diplomat Profile is their natural propensity to be law-abiding, rules-oriented folks. They usually have a strong sense of integrity and respect the norms and conventions of society. To them, breaking the rules arbitrarily is akin to trampling over the very structures that make society work, and enables people to get along.

As such, Diplomat Profiles may never have the devil-may-care attitude that certain other people have, and are averse to adventures that could lead to the possible flouting of law. In unhealthy Diplomat Profiles, they’re often too afraid to break the rules because they’re too afraid of being caught. Primarily, they’re interested in avoiding conflicts of any kind.

However, healthy Diplomat Profiles are essentially the people who uphold laws, rules and systems, and make it easier for others to get their work done. They follow procedure and are steady and direct in their nature, and are often very well-respected because of this. In the working world, such as in large corporations, they are very much valuable members of the team.

Page 37: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

36

ModestMaking an art out of being unassuming

The Diplomat Profile is very committed to being moderate and modest, always staying on the middle line and not going to any extremes. They dislike shouting out their accomplishments from the rooftop, and think that drawing attention to oneself is necessarily a very conceited thing to do. As such, they take great pains to cultivate an air of humbleness, and often remind themselves to not draw attention to themselves.

In healthy Diplomat Profiles, this is particularly refreshing – especially in a world of narcissistic individuals who wear entitlement as a badge of honour. But in unhealthy Diplomat Profiles, it can become somewhat dangerous. They become too invested in being “the same level as” their friends or family or colleagues. They tend to do this to the detriment of their own interests.

As such, they may stifle their own potential in order to maintain this sameness. Standing out and shining as a diamond in the rough makes the Diplomat Profile very uncomfortable. But in healthy Diplomat Profiles, they know how to play down their own achievements in order to play up the achievements of others, and to foster a spirit of “we’re all in this together”. They are rarely “divas”, and don’t need to be hogging the attention in order to feel useful.

Page 39: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

38

SupportiveProviding support for people and causes

At their best, Diplomat Profiles are excellent supporters or other people and causes. They are typically very kind and have a very accommodating nature, and are not keen to fight with or enter into competition with others in order to get ahead. To them, it’s important that everyone gets a fair chance, and peace is maintained. Therefore, they strive to ensure that others do well, and will go all out to provide their support and their backing.

Because of this nature, as well, Diplomat Profiles are often seen as nice people and are rather popular. They work hard and work responsibly, and they do things the right way without aggressively pushing others aside. As such, others are similarly keen to see the Diplomat Profile do well.

Thus, Diplomat Profiles are often the recipients of goodwill, help, and favours due to their kind and supportive nature. Because Diplomat Profile folks are loath to trample upon others in order to get ahead, others are willing to lend them a hand. Healthy Diplomat Profiles are excellent supporters of a cause, and will be keen to come in and improve upon an existing system to help others.

Page 41: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

40

ComplacentContent to rest on their laurels Unhealthy Diplomat Profiles tend to be underachievers. When they’re at their worst, they run the risk of becoming complacent and passive, with their focus more towards maintaining the current status quo or keeping things as they are. The possibilities of change and upheaval are too rocky to contemplate. However, this is not the case with healthy Diplomat Profiles, who are often “given” breaks and opportunities, and who work hard and reliably to cultivate these opportunities. But the opposite is true when they are unhealthy.

When unhealthy, Diplomat Profiles are also too invested in identifying with the group. They become overly-concerned with upsetting the equilibrium and somehow blame themselves if they do better than the rest. The responsibilities that come with success can be alienating, and this is what the Diplomat Profile is reluctant to face up to.

Therefore, it becomes important to stay with and be with the team, and not be better than anyone else. Over time, this desire can take deep roots and become complacency and passivity. Also, Diplomat Profiles specialise in being “hard to attack.” If they hunker down and lay low, emotionally and intellectually, they can’t be visible enough for attack or for brickbats and criticism. Not taking a chance to achieve something great is their way of melting into the shadows, or remaining out of the spotlight.

Page 43: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

Lacks courageLess of a lion, more of a kitten In extreme cases Diplomat Profiles may seem to lack courage in most issues, and this is more pronounced when they are unhealthy. Again, this simply boils down to their need to please people. The fear of offending others is too great. Life seems to be too dangerous to unhealthy Diplomat Profiles, and so the best thing they can do is simply hunker down and play it safe.

Diplomat Profiles are generally motivated to avoid a fight. To them, to win a fight is to avoid a fight. Prevention is better than cure. Hence, this may often come across as lacking courage. Even if they might disagree with someone, they rarely say it if they know it will lead to an argument. They often acquiesce to others in order to keep the peace. They dislike getting drawn out into fights and arguments, as raised voices and bad tempers tend to make them uncomfortable and nervous.

Throughout their lives, unhealthy Diplomat Profiles have learned how to negotiate – so they see everyone’s position clearly, but have trouble seeing their own. Due to this, they tend to put other people’s opinions and input on a pedestal, and have learned to ignore their own. Through practice, this has eroded their self-confidence, leading them to lack the courage needed in order to make a stand or count for a difference.

Hidden Nature

The section on Hidden Nature highlights the private traits of each Profile, traits that are not made easily visible to the external world. In some cases, these traits will continue to lie submerged in the Profile’s psyche, known only to the people themselves, or is only revealed to those who are closest to them. Alternatively, these traits may be unconsciously revealed to others in particular moments.

It is called “hidden” because it’s the sub-conscious behaviour that apparently they themselves are not aware of, and others may only have a glimpse of this after knowing them for a long time as it is concealed and out of immediate sight. The hidden self is typically the driving force of their behaviour.

Page 47: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

46

AngryImploding on the inside

It often comes as a shock to others to learn that the Diplomat Profile has an angry side. In fact, others may not even see this side of the Diplomat, as the anger is often turned inward, and directed at the self. It usually boils over as a result of resentment. Constantly ignoring or avoiding one’s own needs in favour of keeping other people happy, and maintaining peaceful ties, can make the Diplomat Profile be filled with unhappy rage.

Diplomat Profiles often have a sweet quality about them, and appear to have no hard edges. They are great at playing and looking innocent. When they’re angry, it implodes and it turns on the self. Sometimes it smoulders, but it doesn’t explore very often. Then, their anger is manifested in passive-aggressive behaviour. They don’t come right out and say what they want or what is wrong, but will sulk or become distant.

Thus, Diplomat Profiles may very well be simmering balls of anger that no one ever really pays attention to – until, of course, they boil over. The healthier the Diplomat Profile and the more able he or she is able to express anger at appropriate times, the less inwardly-resentful they will be. More often than not, this anger remains hidden because Diplomat Profiles are hesitant to express it to the others – even those whom they’re close to – because they’re afraid they might “lose” the connection.

Page 49: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

48

InsecureThe fear of being discoveredDiplomat Profiles are always secretly afraid of being caught. Somehow, because they’ve managed to suppress their true needs and opinions for so long, they’ve tend to lose sight of who they really are. As such, this lack of foundation or self esteem leads to their insecurity. If they’re unsure who they really are, how can they reveal their “true self” to others? What if others find out about this true self, and leave them?

They are very self-conscious and tend to see themselves through the eyes and perspective of others. Oftentimes, what they find is not likeable or pleasant enough, so they continue to deny its existence. Diplomat Profiles can become too needy and ready to please, and sometimes this may annoy others. They may care “too much” and become dependent on others good opinions of themselves.

Diplomat Profiles, however, are also very concerned about their image and reputations, and need to present a good front to the world. Therefore, they need to appear calm, implacable, and like they’ve got it together. They don’t like to appear insecure or unsure of themselves, even though they very often are. Their easy-going, always ready to go with the flow facade is very often a mask for some deeper fears.

In BaZi, the Profile is only one aspect of what is a very complex study. There are other concepts to take into consideration as a whole, such as the Day Master and the Structure, and more importantly, the strength of the elements that form the Day Master, the Structure, and the Profile.

The concept of strong or weak elements is a fundamental aspect of BaZi, and plays a big role in determining whether a particular Profile is healthy or unhealthy. The strength and quality of your Profile, or its level of health, are based upon the factors that are inherent in your individual BaZi chart.

The Profile Under Pressure reveals how a person belonging to the Profile is likely to behave in situations that are stressful or nerve-wracking, or around other people who create a taxing atmosphere.

Page 55: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

54

The Positive Side (Healthy Level)

Profiles are very clear about their own flaws and strengths, and can be surprisingly free of the self-deception that others can sometimes fall prey to.

•Self-aware

Diplomat Profiles are often very self-aware, due to their keen practice of the virtues of modesty and humbleness. Lacking hubris, healthy Diplomat

Page 56: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

55

•Humble

Their goal is not self-aggrandizement, and thus Diplomat Profiles are rarely motivated by selfish or narcissistic impulses. If they do well or achieve success,

they understand that they go to where they were because of other people’s efforts, as well. They can be very warm and appreciative.

Page 57: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

56

•Proactive

At their best, Diplomat Profiles are very committed to making sure things turn out right. They enjoy taking what is useless and transforming it into something better.

Being proactive and efficient is part of this impulse. If left to their own devices in a supportive environment, they can be very productive.

Page 58: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

57

•Punctual

Diplomat Profiles value time, and are very efficient with how they use it. Typically, they are very punctual and will not like to linger or delay and cause problems to others or

steamroll the system. They often have an inherent sense of good timing, as well, and are rarely scattered or perpetually behind on things.

Page 59: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

58

•Peaceful

Out of all the Profiles, Diplomat Profiles enjoy and appreciate a sense of peace. In any group dynamic, they are keen to bring balance to the harmony and foster a sense of unity that leads to peaceful

resolutions, meetings, and discussions. The extremes of emotions are something they try to avoid in public domains. As such, others find the Diplomat Profiles very calming and reassuring.

Page 60: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

59

•Unpretentious

Diplomat Profiles deeply dislike artifice and fakeness. They are not one to be sympathetic to posers who display themselves flagrantly for a bid to gain

attention. At their heart, Diplomat Profiles are unpretentious and natural; they generally have plain and simple desires, and have a very basic sense of how to live life.

60

The Negative Side (Unhealthy Level)

their endeavours and get projects going. They may simply leave things to “luck” or a prayer and hope that things turn out. They fall prey to fatalistic thinking.

•Passive

At their worst, Diplomat Profiles can be alarmingly passive. They can sometimes settle into a comfortable stupor and will lack the energy to kick start

Page 62: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

61

•Procrastinator

Diplomat Profiles are experts at avoiding a problem or pretending it isn’t there. To do this, they may push something important until the very last minute. Or, they keep holding off

on something without taking any amount of action. They refuse to take the responsibility to deal with the problem when it occurs.

Page 63: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

62

•Stubborn

When they’ve got their minds made up, they refuse to be budged. Diplomat Profiles often do a lot of hinging and hemming and hawing before making a

decision. Thus, once they’ve made it, they’re reluctant to be open to other interpretations, and can be rather mulish about sticking to their guns.

Page 64: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

63

•Self-conscious

When unhealthy, Diplomat Profiles rarely just do things because they want to. They are always thinking of the world watching them, and are too awkward and ill-at-ease to simply go ahead and do

it. Although no one probably cares that much (as they’re too busy focusing on their own lives!), Diplomat Profiles are convinced that the whole world is watching them – and judging them.

Page 65: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

64

•Depressive

Because of so many stifled desires and a particular brand of thinking that assumes everything’s going to go wrong, Diplomat Profiles can often be depressed and stuck in a rut. They rarely

transform their anger or dissatisfaction into productive energy, and thus perpetuate a cycle of complacency and lack of results. This further creates a sense of depression.

Page 66: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

65

•Inattentive

The same impulses that give them a lack of energy also makes the Diplomat Profile easily inattentive. They lack focus and drive, and are bound to amble about

aimlessly when they’re at an unhealthy level. They may have slow reflexes and be unable to concentrate on things or what other people are saying.

Page 67: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

66

The Diplomat Profile Under Pressure

• Aggression

Their pent-up anger and resentment can manifest as aggression, especially when they’ve been pressured to do things differently. Although very rarely violent, they can become hostile and belligerent.

• Denial

When pushed into a corner or faced with a quandary, the Diplomat Profile resorts to going into denial. They pretend a problem doesn’t exist and hopes that it will go away on its own.

Page 68: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

67

• Doubt

They can be paralysed by intense doubt when feeling great amounts of stress. This usually makes them unable to come to a decision without the aid of someone else. Their thoughts are usually disorganised and in a tumult.

• Suspicious

As they’ve long trusted others and may have been used by others because of their niceness, Diplomat Profiles can quickly switch over to the other side – suspicion. They will become highly apprehensive and distrustful of most people who come to them for help.

The Intimate Subtype and

What It MeansIn BaZi Profiling, the Profile can be divided into two subtypes, the Intimate Subtype and the Social Subtype.

The Intimate Subtype essentially refers to the growing awareness of the self with an “other” – i.e. another person. It starts out in life with the Profile’s parents or primary caregivers, and then as the person grows up and starts taking his or her place in the world, with one’s close friends, partners, and/or spouse.

This section typically emphasises how the Profile engages with the intimate other, and the psychological thinking and behaviour that may motivate or give impulse to their actions and words. The Intimate Subtype reflects how the person of this Profile behaves when in a relationship, or looking for one. It refers to their relationship mask.

Page 73: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

72

EncouragingNurturing others to fruition

In their intimate relations with others, Diplomat Profiles are often intensely-loved for their ability to be extremely supportive and encouraging of others. They care for others in a way that is absolute and complete, and often put the needs of others ahead of their own. They rarely complain or show any form of aggression to the people closest to them.

They are also very comforting to others, because they downplay the flaws that other people have. Diplomat Profiles are concerned with ensuring that they nurture the talents and the abilities of their friends or partner, going all out to provide a warm and accommodating environment. They don’t try to compete or put their needs ahead of others.

Diplomat Profiles will become extremely focused on the partner. In healthy Diplomat Profiles, this is a good thing, although unhealthy Diplomat Profiles may then start to merge with the partner or almost start to “live through” the close friend, partner, or even their own family members.

Page 75: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

74

UndemandingNot asking for much

In relationships, Diplomat Profiles can be very uncomplicated and undemanding. They don’t ask for much, and they don’t make themselves the centre of the relationship. In fact, their partner or the other person becomes the focus of the relationship. Therefore, their own demands always come second, or third, or sometimes, never at all.

On the one hand, this makes for an ideal relationship on most counts. Diplomat Profiles are rarely demanding excuses for a partner’s absence, or wanting to know why a friend cancelled on them at the very last-minute. In romantic relationships, Diplomat Profiles adapt very well to domestic life and like to keep things tension-free and stable.

On the other hand, though, Diplomat Profiles run the risk of becoming doormats in the relationship. They may not demand for much because they’re unaware of their own demands, or have suppressed their own needs. Then, they may rely on the partner to give them purpose and focus, and thus inadvertently place other more serious demands on the partner without realising it.

Page 77: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

76

Emotionally-unavailableDucking out of the “hard” things

When they’re unhealthy, Diplomat Profiles may fulfill all of the superficial needs of a relationship but may not be emotionally-present for the important things. They will extend themselves in less-important ways, such as keeping the house clean, doing the chores for the busy partner, or sacrificing their own time for their spouse’s business dinners and socialising.

However, they may be absent emotionally and intellectually when it comes to discussing important issues. Or they will retreat during fights and conflicts, surrounding themselves with a wall. This is how the Diplomat Profile becomes emotionally-unavailable in a relationship.

In certain situations, things can become pretty serious, as important emotions are left unattended to. In fact, their ability to become unavailable where it counts allows them to remain in denial to any serious problems in the relationship, thereby absolving them of the need to take responsibility or make some unpleasant changes.

Page 79: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

78

DetachedPresent, but not really thereAs mentioned earlier, one of the traits of the unhealthy Diplomat Profile is their ability to be inattentive. This can be a ruse to simply “opt out” of a difficult emotional situation that involves other people. As they are reluctant to rock the boat, and will prefer things to remain unchanged, Diplomat Profiles become extremely adept at being in a relationship but being detached.

However, this sense of detachment doesn’t really lead to greater independence or autonomy. They may, for instance, stay too long in an unhealthy relationship because they allow the partner to create and enforce the unspoken rules in the relationship. The Diplomat Profile simply assumes that those rules are necessary for their partner, and may go along with it for years especially because they maintain a sense of emotional detachment and are not aware of their own needs.

Unhealthy Diplomat Profiles also tend to have low standards in relationships (as higher standards will require greater effort, or more serious forms of sacrifice), and they may settle for too little and then be disappointed. When this happens, they can either become fickle and look anew, or simply disassociate themselves from the emotional realities of their connection to the other person.

The Social Subtype and

What It MeansIn BaZi Profiling, the Profile can be divided into two subtypes, the Intimate Subtype and the Social Subtype.

The Social Subtype essentially refers to the self in interaction with the larger community of family, and extended group of friends and acquaintances, and the world at large. This will include its interactions with schoolmates, university peers, and at work, the colleagues as well as the superiors and subordinates.

The Social Subtype essentially asserts the Profile’s right to belong in the world; and quite naturally, different Profiles operate in different ways in order to assert this need, and gauge its sense of place in the grander scheme of things. The Social Subtype provides hints on how the Profile may approach social causes and interact with issues and events that affect the surrounding community.

Harmonious

A good team leader In their interactions with the world, Diplomat Profiles prove to be very harmonious, and are key figures in ensuring unity and peace among others. They tend to exemplify the song lyrics that say, “All we are saying, is give peace a chance.” They want to have everything in working order, and this includes having people also all lined up in peaceful order!

As such, when healthy, Diplomat Profiles make good and sound leaders within a community. They tend to observe conservative values and uphold traditions, and have strong respect for conventions and laws. They will not promote the interests of one group over other. They will usually not go into extremes of beliefs of practice.

Team-spiritedBlending into group concernsDiplomat Profiles also tend to be popular for the simple reason that they have marvellous team spirit. In fact, many of the best professional athletes and top CEOs and GMs are from the Diplomat Profile. They enter fully into the flow of the team, and because of their special ability to see all sides of everything all at once.

It would seem like the phrase ‘go with the flow’ was created for the Diplomat Profile. Even while they lead from within a team, either at work or in their community, they subtly groom the team, support the team from the inside, and make them bigger and stronger. Their commitments merge harmoniously with the commitments of the team.

To be successful as this type of leader, Diplomat Profiles have the strength of playing down individual performance and emphasizing the teamwork and collective effort that went into something. They appreciate everyone’s opinions, and more importantly, everyone’s contributions, making them easily liked and respected.

Page 89: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

IndecisiveNeeding someone else to decideWhen they’re at unhealthy levels, Diplomat Profiles often lack the gumption needed to make strong decisions and stick by it. They find it much more comfortable to discard the duties and obligations of decision-making, because they know that decisions are partisan, and any decision they make is bound to upset at least one other person.

Thus, they may completely reject the mantle of leadership; or if they are leaders, will not know how to choose. They can be fickle-minded, always thinking big and expecting too much, and regretting their decision after the consequences prove to be different, thereby moving on to the next decision.

Alternatively, they may simply need other people to do the big decisions for them. This lack of being able to stand up for what they want may make them insignificant in the public eye, as they tend to go along with whatever someone else decides, or prioritise the agenda of someone a little stronger and more forceful that they are.

ConservativeCoasting by on ‘safe mode’When Diplomat Profiles enter the world in an unhealthy state, they may simply manifest as extremely conservative beings. They think conservatively, and they act conservatively. They are primarily concerned with not rocking the boat, and to getting to the shore safely and in one piece.

In some ways, they don’t think clearly – especially with words. They often have an uncanny intuition or a gut feeling, but they tend not to be articulate. For that reason, the Diplomat Profile is middle-of-the-road and traditional, and are always comfortable working within a pre-approved, existing system.

Diplomat Profiles are often good at supporting others in the workplace. They make the ideal “number two” person in a hierarchy of command, below a leader and above many. HUMAN RESOURCE

Diplomat Profiles primary concern are other humans. As such, they tend to flourish in Human Resource because it’s an industry that focuses on taking existing systems of practice and methods and making it better. Moreover, it’s about making it better for the humans, and will require Diplomat Profile’s talent for multiple perspectives.

The Diplomat Profile’s inherent talent for smoothing over conflicts and for creating a more peaceful environment for everyone concerned also works well for this discipline. They will be adept at handling the day-to-day management of people and will put in a lot of effort to ensure that things turn out right.

They will also do well in non-profit organisations or in social work, where their respect for both individuals and systems or proper rules of law comes into play. Ensuring that the defenceless have a voice, and have their rights taken care of, as well as access to proper legislation are all jobs that the Diplomat Profile thrives in. When needed, Diplomat Profiles can be extremely strong and assertive on behalf of weaker others.

They will be committed to looking after the community and looking out for others’ welfare, although they may have trouble dealing with the competitive, ruthless spirit of modern-day politics. 1) Make more decisions

Diplomat Profiles should strive to act independently and train themselves to be systematic, disciplined thinkers. They should avoid thinking about what other people would think, and simply think about the problem itself, and then attempt to make a decision that would best lead to a resolution. They need to build up their trust in their own decision-making skills, and that means less of a reliance on others.

Page 115: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

114

2) Lead small teams

Although Diplomat Profiles often make good leaders, they tend to underdevelop the qualities that make them significant and powerful ones. This includes being willing to stand by their individual assessments and opinions – not to the detriment of others, necessarily, but sometimes they must recognise that the best decision may not be a popular one. They should cultivate themselves this way in small teams and groups and develop their confidence this way.

3) Suggest ideas

In meetings and discussions, Diplomat Profiles should volunteer their ideas – of which they’ll discover they have plenty, if they only shed their self-consciousness. Too often, Diplomat Profiles hold their tongue for various unfounded fears and insecurities. They should try to contribute at least one unasked opinion or idea at a time while in meetings. If it makes them feel better to do this in smaller groups, or in one-on-one settings, then they should start this way and gradually work themselves up.

Page 117: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

116

4) Do things that are uncomfortable

Too often, Diplomat Profiles often confuse thoughts with feelings. They may feel afraid, but that doesn’t necessarily follow that their opinion is stupid or worthless. But they will refrain from saying it because they cannot handle the discomfort of potential failure or rejection or being wrong. Therefore, Diplomat Profiles need to practice on getting used to feeling uncomfortable – because that’s life. They can start with one thing a day, and gradually, it’ll become much easier.

5) Break a rule (or two)

The Diplomat Profile’s absolute adherence to regulations and laws is commendable, but sometimes it becomes more of a crutch to avoid risks and unpleasantness than it is a strength. Therefore, they should know that there some rules that are meant to be broken – after they’ve understood what those rules are there for! Discoveries can only be made when tinkering with the prescribed conventions. Diplomat Profiles will find their world a lot richer if they dare to step outside of the box.

The Democratic / Participative Leader

Democratic or participative leadership refers to the Diplomat Profile leader who is concerned primarily with employing minimal direction, and allowing team members and employees to feel in control of their own destiny when they are included in the decision-making progress. The Diplomat Profile leader acts as a guide, accepts input, and seeks ideas and suggestions through discussion.

IDEAL in situations where time is available because thus approach can take more time; but often the end result is better. The approach can be most suitable when working as a team is essential, and

when quality is more important than speed to market or productivity. It also helps team members feel included and valued, and enables them to feel invested in the team’s objectives and mission.

LESS IDEAL in situations where decisions need to be made quickly and swiftly, and in time-strapped scenarios. It also is less effective in a group of new or inexperienced members who need to be more firmly lead, and may also backfire if the team has less trustworthy or aggressively competitive personalities who will be out to undermine each other in discussions.

Further traits displayed by the Diplomat Profile leader at work:

Principled

Diplomat Profiles principle-centred leaders, based on the reality that they cannot violate what they tend to take as “natural” laws with impunity. Individuals are more effective and organizations more empowered when they are guided and governed by these proven principles. Diplomat Profiles believe that there are no easy, quick-fix solutions to personal and interpersonal problems. Principles, unlike values, are objective and external. They operate in obedience to natural laws, regardless of conditions, and thus as leaders they operate out of this framework.

Page 123: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

122

Systematic

Diplomat Profile leaders are very much invested in adhering to a very systematic mode of procedure. They believe that progress does not come from a sense of chaos, and is no fan of the “last-minute” method of work. If something needs to be done well, it needs to be done early – that’s their belief. They create systems in place to encourage efficiency and heighten productivity. They have no patience for those who come in at the final minute with a new “idea” that is absolutely essential. They have key directive and standards, with clearly defined performance expectations. Sometimes, this may make them rigid or inflexible in terms of leadership.

By-the-book

Diplomat Profiles are not keen to reinvent the wheel. As leaders, they tend to lead from established values and norms, and don’t see the need to upset the status quo. They won’t change it and will maintain it unless given very good reasons for the need to change it. Even so, they might only want to make minor alterations.

Identifying the Super Diplomat Profile at Work: The Obedient When their qualities are manifested in excess in an unhealthy scale, there is something known as the Super Diplomat Profile – in other words, The Obedient. 125

• The Obedient person is always rule-abiding. They seek a clear purpose or goal from which they can develop an orderly plan and organise their actions. Once a project has begun, they fight tenaciously to achieve their objectives. As a result, they can be perceived as stubborn and opinionated. To deal with them, intervention is sometimes necessary to change their direction. They may have to be spoken to, and the need for a different route or path will have to be clearly explained to them.

Page 127: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

126

• The agenda of the Super Diplomat Profiles is to get along, not to push their own. Until they get focused, they are practically immovable, and may not want to upset the apple cart in any tangible fashion. Sometimes, this means that they may be completely stuck in a rut and still unable to move. Deal with it by giving them a gentle shove. They will need, but the trick is not to be too harsh or aggressive. They will dig in their heels deeper.

127

• Despite being mild-mannered, The Obedient folks have a strong need to control the environment. They tend to exert this control indirectly by requiring others to adhere to rules and standards. This is when their passive-aggressiveness comes into play. They can be extremely annoying in this manner, because they create discomfort without saying what they want. When dealt with openly and honestly, however, they can’t run. They are not hypocrites and abhor telling lies, so plainly and frankly calling them out on their behaviour is usually good enough to get them to alter it.

Page 129: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

128

• Because they value self-discipline, The Obedient folks evaluate others on the basis of their ability to focus on daily performance. They have high expectations of themselves and others, and they tend to verbalise their disappointment. In general, this is not a bad thing, because they’re proactive. One must only need to intervene if their criticisms are demoralising, or they become overly-critical to the point of letting it interfere with the relationship or productivity.

•Avoid great expectations

Diplomat Profiles perform best when they think no one’s watching, and if they assume that there are no expectations on them. “Give it a try” is what they like to

Diplomat Profiles need to feel valuable and that they are of use. To be ignored and sidelined can make them feel very unwanted and thus depressed. If they

have done something that is of use to the team or to someone else, tell them that! Make sure that it’s sincere appreciation, and they will glow.

Page 140: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

•Give them time

Diplomat Profiles need time to make decisions. They can’t be rushed; the more they are rushed and prodded, the more they will refuse. In fact, they will simply dig in

painful, but it matters more that one does not charge up to them and confront them, or get into an argument. Then, they will simply retreat. A relaxed, informal decision is what they respond to.

For too long, Diplomat Profiles have kept their real needs and wants stifled. They go along with whatever their spouse wants for dinner. They have lunch where their colleagues want to eat. They refuse to decide on what colour to paint the living room, and then are

to please others, it’s akin to abandoning the self when it needs to be supported. If they themselves don’t support their ideas, who else will? That’s a very important question that Diplomat Profiles should ask themselves.

Let conflicts brew on occasion

Diplomat Profiles must accept conflicts, arguments and disputes as an inevitable part of life. When someone disagrees with them, it doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the relationship. When they disagree with

their boss, it is not the end of the job. People won’t leave them for getting into a fight with them. Diplomat Profiles must see their irrational fears for what they are – irrational. Conflicts will resolve themselves if they just let it be.

Page 150: BaZi Profiling Series - The Diplomat (Direct Officer Profile)

Develop self confidence

Most importantly, Diplomat Profiles must take the right steps to developing their own self-confidence. It’s no use looking to the external world for validation. People are important, but not to the detriment

of the self! If it would be better to eliminate certain ties to poisonous people, do it. If they’re stuck in a rut in a dead-end job, think about what they would like to do instead.

Without achievements, life would not be meaningful. Achievements can come from social, intimate and work relationships in life. The Diplomat is righteous and law-abiding; a well-mannered personality committed to goodwill.

The Diplomat Profile is an upright citizen and a protector of values. You enjoy good esteem among others and are often humble and unassuming. You will not be easily won over by lies and fraud; you respect principles and strive to uphold them. You are a great supporter of rightful causes.

Sometimes you can sacrifice your own needs and become overly accommodating to others to the point of being used. In some cases you may be too concerned with rocking the boat, and surrender your own opinion in favor of the bigger picture.

Discover how you relate to the people and the world around you in terms of work, close relationships and the community at large. This book outlines your strengths, weaknesses and hidden nature, and provides ideas for you to effectively connect with others and be the best you can be in life.

Master your own strengths based on your BaZi Profile and cultivate your inborn talent and nature to create positive change in your career, relationship and friendships.
