Advent Greetings! One of my favourite Christmas stories as a child was “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss. A revised animated version was released this November. In the original film I always liked the song, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”. Although the words were not very flattering to the Grinch, they did convey his personality. It began with, “You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch. You really are a heel. You're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch. You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel!” Children thought this was so funny. Dr. Seuss was expressive in his words and images. The story is about a Grinch who had a very small heart. He really only cared about himself. He did not like the people in Whoville. They were always so happy and caring towards one another. They loved Christmas and that made the Grinch even more upset. The Grinch was so jealous that he decided to steal Christmas from the people in Whoville. On Christmas Eve he stole all their presents and even their Christmas dinner. The Grinch thought the people would cry and be so upset, but instead they gathered in a big circle, held hands and sang a song to welcome Christmas. When the Grinch heard their joy even when everything had been taken from them, his heart began to grow. He too began to feel the joy of Christmas. He realized Christmas was not about gifts and food, it is about the love of family, friends, and neighbours. Christmas is about being together and caring for each other. One of the joys of being part of a church is that we are part of God’s family who seek to support each other and in turn seek to help people in need in our community and around the world. Advent Greetings! One of my favourite Christmas stories as a child was “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss. A revised animated version was released this November. The story is about a Grinch who had a very small heart. He really only cared about himself. He did not like the people in Whoville. They were always so happy and caring towards one another. Council’s Annual Planning Day was held on Saturday, August 25th in Fellowship Hall with 30

members attending. Rev. Cindy led a lively discussion on the meaning of happiness and what makes us happy. After lunch we completed the calendar of worship services, events and meetings for the upcoming year, September through June. Council met in September and October to receive reports from the Ministry Teams and updates from the teams are included in this newsletter. In July, the 43

rd General Council of the United Church of Canada enacted the seven remits passed

by the majority of presbyteries and congregations across Canada. The new structure approved will be implemented in 2019. The effect of these changes to our congregation will be outlined our Annual Report. We continue to carry out the mission and vision of our church through the commitment by all members of the Ministry Teams and Committees and the support of the congregation.

We all agree that the young people and youth of BUC are a small but vibrant part of our church life. They add an extra spark of joy and meaning to our congregation. They participate in our worship service each week during the Time with Young People and sometimes they sing or play a musical instrument, read scripture, or take part in the Christmas Eve drama.

We are grateful for the commitment of our Nursery and Sunday School teachers. Most of them have been teaching Sunday School for years and we cannot thank them enough for their dedication in nurturing our young people’s faith life.

Currently we have three Sunday School teachers and youth volunteers but we have been unsuccessful in hiring a new leader for the youth and currently the youth class is without a leader. We will continue to advertise our need in the wider church, but in the meantime we are calling on the support of parents or perhaps some adults in our congregation who would be willing, with the support of a youth resource, to lead the youth class once every 6-8 weeks.

We know it is a big commitment, but we truly value our youth. It is so critical to offer them a meaningful program so that they will continue to come to church each week. We do not want to lose our youth presence in the church. If you are willing to help out, please speak to me. This is a very important ministry within our congregation. Please consider supporting this ministry as you are able.

Ongoing

Eva's Place: All toiletries, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc. are

accepted weekly to help the youth at Eva's Place.

Lansing Food Bank: Accepts non-perishable food items. They especially need

items for babies, non-beef soup and canned black beans.

Lion’s Club Sight Program: Accepts old or no longer used eyeglasses and

sunglasses.

Leprosy Mission Canada: Accepts used postage stamps with a 1/4 inch border.

Community and Global Partnership Submitted by Irene Kagawa

On September 16th, our Sunday School children and their parents participated in the Terry Fox Walk for Cancer Research. Our congregation helped raise $935.00 for this cause. To celebrate World Food Day, Marie Truelove, co-chair of the St. James Food Basket was our guest speaker. Our church supports St. James Food Basket by donating items from our Christmas mitten tree. A $500.00 donation was given from the Audrey Sasaki Fukuzawa Fund to the St. James United Church Food Basket. After the service, we served Stone Soup and raised $265.00 for the Lansing Food Bank. Once again we are collecting winter clothing for the Children's Breakfast Club. They are accepting good quality or gently used clean coats and sweaters for children and adults. Please place these items in the area outside the upstairs washroom. Japanese Social Services are holding their Annual Holiday Drive. We are accepting monetary donations from mid-November to Christmas. Please place your donation on the offering plate marked JSS Holiday Drive along with your name and envelope number. Cheques should be written to Bayview United Church so that we can issue you a receipt. We have chosen Na-Me-Res (Native Men's Residence) for White Gift on December 16th. Steve Teekens, executive director will be our guest speaker on Mission Sunday, November 25th. There are 71 beds in the emergency men's shelter. They would appreciate men's socks, underwear, pyjamas, men's toiletries, Tim Horton's and Subway gift certificates and monetary donations. Monetary donations will be used to serve the men turkey dinner on Christmas Day.

Fall Bazaar 2018 Submitted by Carol MacLean, Bazaar Coordinator

Each year our results have been better than the previous year which it is

all due to our outstanding, dedicated group of volunteers and generous

donors - thank you all! We are grateful to everyone who came out on

Saturday for a delicious lunch, shopped for food, crafts, and plants, bid

for items at the silent auction, and purchased raffle tickets. The response

to requests for donations was overwhelming this year, especially for

Japanese food, and we are grateful to all the donors.

Here is a recap of the income from the Bazaar Team:

Naomi Takasaki has resigned and will not be looking

after the udon preparations going forward. We are very

grateful for the many years that Naomi has been in

charge of the udon lunch and chow mein. And this is

my last year serving as the coordinator.

We will be reviewing our

Thanks to everyone for their dedicated financial stewardship during the current year. It looks like we are on our way to having a balanced income and expense statement for the full year 2018.

I would like you to consider PAR as a way for you to support Bayview United Church. PAR is a direct debit program that allows people to support their church through an automatic monthly withdrawal from their bank account. The United Church administers the program following the giver's wishes (e.g., a specified amount for local church expenses and another specified amount for the Mission and Service Fund). Once a month, all PAR donations will be debited from your bank account and then the total, less a service fee of $0.50, will be electronically transferred to BUC’s bank account. If you would like to know more about PAR please speak to me.

I know that many of our members are on a fixed income but like everything else the cost of operating the church increase every year so somehow we must increase our income to offset these cost increases.

with items suitable for Christmas. You are welcome to bring in any item you would like to share with the congregation (doesn't have to be Christmas items only). This is a time for all to mingle and have fun choosing a free item to take home.

Christmas poinsettias and other gifts or cards will be delivered to shut-ins during the month of December. Many thanks to those making the deliveries.

Family Day: February 17, 2019. Dee Dee and the H & C Team wish to continue this tradition: a family-oriented worship service and a pot-luck luncheon. Dee Dee will provide more information in the New Year.

Rev. Cindy and our H & C Team members continue to support our congregation in prayer, visit our shut-ins, make hospital visits, make telephone calls, send greeting cards, and deliver prayer shawls. We also support worship services at Donway (Marie Cruise with tasty cookies) and Momiji.

We continue to hold Dee Dee, Brian and her mother Lydia in our prayers as they grieve the passing of Min Yatabe, a kind, loving, and gentle man. With Joy, The H & C Team

Nostalgia Night at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre Submitted by Kaz Shikaze At their annual Nostalgia Night, this year the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre decided to honour four churches for their support of the Japanese Canadian community during and after the internment. The following are the remarks that I made after Bayview United Church was presented with a Certificate of Recognition. If you would like to view the Certificate it is mounted on the west wall of the narthex. Good afternoon, First of all I would like to convey our thanks to the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre for its decision to honour the churches at Nostalgia Night 2018. There's no doubt that the churches of all denominations provided a strong support for the Japanese Canadian community in the GTA in the period following the internment. I am sure many of you are wondering how Bayview United Church has anything to do with the Japanese community so I will give you a brief history. Toronto Japanese United Church was formed in 1946 and in 1954 Toronto Japanese United Church Nisei became a separate congregation. So then there were two congregations, TJUC Issei and TJUC Nisei. In 1958 both congregations, moved from Queen Street United Church to Centennial United Church located at 701 Dovercourt Road. In 1986 Toronto Japanese United Church Nisei amalgamated with Centennial United Church to become Centennial Japanese United Church. In 2006 Toronto Japanese United Church Issei and Centennial Japanese United Church moved to Lansing United Church where we rented space. If you do the math you will find that we were at 701 Dovercourt for 38 years. In 2011 both congregations moved to Oriole York Mills United Church. As Toronto Japanese United Church Issei diminished in size they amalgamated with Centennial Japanese United Church in November 2011 with the understanding that there would be a Japanese language worship service once a month. Finally in 2014 Centennial Japanese United Church and Oriole York Mills United Church amalgamated and the new entity was named, you guessed it, Bayview United Church. If you understand and retained all that I would have to say you have a pretty good mind. Presently, Bayview United Church has about 160 members and on any given Sunday morning there are about 75 to 90 of us attending the worship service. Most people think church service are very formal and stodgy but that is not the case at Bayview United Church where our minister, Rev. Cindy Cooper, makes sure she has at least one or two good jokes in her sermon. You never see anyone falling asleep when Rev. Cindy is delivering her sermon. Her sermons always contain information that helps us in our daily lives. We have over 30 members of Bayview United Church in attendance here this evening and I would like to recognize 5 of the charter or original members who are with us. That means they have been members since 1954 or for 64 years. They are: Sue Kai, Molly Morita, Louise Hirowatari, Grace Omoto, and Amy Kunihiro. Please stand and be recognized and thank you for your hard work, commitment and dedication. The United Church prides itself on being open and welcoming, as Jesus was. Everyone is welcome

regardless of age, race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or physical ability. As an example of this inclusiveness the United Church ordained its first female minister in 1936 and ordained its first homosexual minister in 1988. The Moderator is the spiritual head of the church and we have had an Asian, Black and Indigenous Moderator as well as women Moderators and Moderators from the

LGBTQ community. Now I would like to talk a bit about the outreach aspect of Bayview United Church which is a very important focus of our church. In 2017 individual United Churches gave 26 million dollars to the United Church Mission and Service fund and Bayview United Church donated $29,000 of that. The United Church uses the majority of the Mission and Service fund for outreach projects in Canada and around the world.

In the Japanese Canadian community, every year Bayview United Church financially supports Japanese Social Services and Momiji Health Care Society to the best of our ability. Also, Rev. Cindy has a monthly worship service at Momiji. We also support the bazaars and other events at Momiji and JCCC. Every year we donate food and cash to the Lansing Food Bank and also support Don Valley Refuge Resettlers which has resettled over 60 refugees over the past number of years. We also participate every year in the Terry Fox Run for Cancer research and over the years we have donated over $14,000. We also give a scholarship to a deserving student at Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto. This past year we supported Doctors Without Borders and donated to Eva’s Place which is an organization that provides housing for homeless youth in Toronto. That is about all I have to say but if you would like to join us for a worship service, we worship and have Sunday School, every Sunday morning at 11 am at 2609 Bayview Ave. just north of York Mills Rd. on the east side. Parking is available and we are accessible by TTC. The second Sunday of each month there is a Japanese language service at 1:00 pm. Thank you for your attention and thanks again to the JCCC for sponsoring this event.

A Cute Little Song

Orchestra leader, Lawrence Welk, used to wrap up his weekly TV programme by saying, “Keep a Song in Your Heart”. Here are the lyrics to one that has lingered with me since Perry Como with help from the Fontana Sisters elevated it to the Hit Parade in 1949.

“A” You’re Adorable

When Johnny Jones was serenading Mary He sure could quote a lot of poetry But he’d much rather tell ‘er what he learned in his speller When they both attended PS 33

(A) You’re adorable (B) You’re so beautiful (C) You’re a cutie full of charms (D) You’re a darling and (E) You’re exciting (F) You’re a feather in my arms (G) You look good to me (H) You’re so heavenly (I) You’re the one I idolize (J) We’re like Jack and Jill (K) You’re so kissable (L) Is the love light in your eyes M, N, O, P (you could go on all day) Q, R, S, T (alphabetically speaking, you’re OK)

(U) made my life complete (V) means you’re very sweet W, X, Y, Z It’s fun to wander through The alphabet with you To tell (us what?) I mean (uh-huh?) To tell you what you mean to me (We love you alphabetically)

Why not learn the tune via YouTube and then sing it to your children or grandchildren? Submitted by Don Worth

The major project over the summer was the repair and/or replacement of the handicap ramp, sidewalk on the north side of the building and the two porches at the entrances. As well as a new sidewalk and entrances, new railings were installed.

The dead tree and shrubbery on the north side of the building were removed. An arborist report was sent to the City of Toronto and we thank Lorne MacLean for obtaining City approval. As well, the shrubbery was removed thanks to the hard work of Tom Maikawa and Kearne Bryan.

Due to some concerns about security, a Nest camera was installed at the main entrance and has already proved to be helpful on a couple of occasions

Our contract with Kip Campbell expired in September and was not renewed. Our new custodian is Kearne Bryan. Kearne works on Sundays from 9 am to 8:30 pm and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 1:30 pm.

Tom Maikawa will arrange to hold a fire drill refresher session in the new year. We also need to make sure we have people able to handle first aid, CPR and defibrillator use so we are looking for volunteers to take the training. Please contact Linda Fujita if you are willing to be trained. We need a minimum of 10 people to hold the training at the church and we currently have only 6 people.

Other projects completed this summer include: -Repair of the threshold on the front door and replacement of the flush bolt on the stationary half. -Installation of blinds in the sanctuary and the narthex-A free-standing air conditioner to help relieve the heat in the summer. -Repair of some electrical issues -Purchase of a Canadian flag for the sanctuary. It will be displayed on July 1 and Remembrance Sunday.

On the administration side, we continue to work on the update of the database of members and friends. Because of the number of changes, a new directory will be issued in early 2019. If you know of any changes, please notify Mary Leone in the office.

As well, we have made arrangements for our caterer, Ian James Catering, to look after the Sunday lunches about once per month to give our ladies a break!

There are always projects to help maintain and improve the building and the property team will be meeting in November to discuss plans for next year.
