Library 2018 This has been a big year for our library with the addition of many books & magazines. The first influx around the middle of the year was so much that the shelving had to be extended. The second influx was items donated by Ken McC., a member who has had to give up his hobbies and move into ‘care’. Many thanks to Ken for his donations. Thanks to Brian E for coming on board to assist with the operating of the Library. This now gives us a backup when one of us is away. Brian contributed enormously with the first influx during the year – Thanks Brian. Again the end of the year is time to update the hard copy records, which means you are able to search for items in the data base before having to wade through items on the shelf. A new addition is the complete indexes for both the English Woodturning and Carving magazines in the appropriate DVD sections. The American Woodturner magazine subscription has worked out well for those contributing with all receiving an electronic copy as soon as it is available. If they wish, they get to read the hard copy and the hard copy is then entered into the library. A reminder to keep the hard copy moving and back to me. I am missing a couple of copies at the moment. I hope the group subscription continues for 2019. Remember - When new publications are received they are held in-house for a month before they are available for loan. These publications are identified by a red circular sticker on the front cover. When that sticker is removed it is then available for borrowing. To borrow an item you must locate the library card for the particular item by using the identifying number on the item, record your details on the card and replace it in the correct order in its’ filing box. And don’t forget to return the item within a month and note the index card with the date of return. Copies of in house demo are available for $2 from Ken G or myself. If you require a copy of any CD/DVD for yourself and are unable to copy it, see me to arrange a copy for $2.00. An electronic copy of most books can be arranged. For anyone who is not familiar with the library contents & how it works, particularly our newer members, come and see me or Brian and we can explain all! Club Store

There is a vacancy for someone to learn the operations of the Club Store and assist with the ordering and

sales of items for club members. This is a very important role and any one of you is capable of fulfilling this

vacancy. The Club Store cannot operate with only one storekeeper. No retail experience is necessary!

The store is open on the mornings of club meetings so it is not a time consuming role. So come on board

and actively assist the club by volunteering.

Q Turn

Q Turn will be held on the 14th to 16th June 2019 so set aside these dates in your calendar. For further

information see Steve but as details come to hand they will be included in the newsletter.

Slabbing of Timber

Club members are advised that a new request for slabbing sheet is on the noticeboard. Should you require

some timber to be processed you MUST complete all the details.

MALENY WOOD SHOW - May 4,5,6, 2019

Display and Sales - 8:30 till 4:30 pm - Kids Workshop – 10 till 3 pm. Entry is free to those working in either capacity. If members wish to stay over, there may be a possibility of

being able to billet with Blackall Range Woodwork Guild Members. Alternately you may park your

campervan or caravan in the grounds or stay with friends or relatives who live close by.

The club will run three hands on activities (probably decorating spinning tops, assembling dovetail boxes,

copying traced, pyrography designs or using pyrography to enhance items. The club is sharing the ‘’Kids

Workshop’’ area with Maleny Men’s Shed and Blackall Range Woodies.

We need to be 1 on 1 supervising these activities and could have up to 5 children at a time. This means lots

of bodies. For the purpose of entry passes, numbers will need to be known very soon.

PLEASE INDICATE YOUR WILLINGNESS TO ASSIST IN PROMOTING OUR CLUB by filling in your Name and

time/s you are available on the form on the notice board in the club.

Bayside Clock Group issue 1/2019 Clock making is a marathon it is not a sprint.

When we started this group in May 2017 there were many unknowns not the least an inexperienced

teacher, no documentation and a circumstance best summarised as the blind being led by the visually

impaired.

Despite these difficulties and thanks in no small part to unending patience by all participants we managed

to cobble a few clocks together. That number is expected to grow as members of the group build their

cases to house the movements they built.

But now it is different thanks to the efforts of Ken, Rob and Dave we have a manual which pretty well

makes me redundant.

Today Ian told me that our grant request is progressing and he anticipates a positive outcome. He expects

that we will know something by the end of the month. When that happens I will convene a meeting of

anybody who is interested to follow on from a Wednesday morning meeting. We will then discuss the way

forward including the proposed shopping exercise and how we will organise it.

The most significant purchase on the list is a new metal lathe. I will be proposing that we purchase a Seig

SC4 which is the same machine I recently purchased for my own workshop. Its main disadvantage is that it

is a bit noisy at high speed and care needs to be exercised using the Vernier. But apart from that I think it is

excellent value for money. https://www.ausee.com.au/shop/category.aspx?catid=51

I will also be proposing that we have a team leadership arrangement rather than just me.

Another difference from the past will be the ability, thanks to the manual, for people to progress at their

own pace. Once the training programs have been completed it should not be necessary to wait until

Thursday afternoons to work on your clock.

But, having said that, I need to emphasise the importance of safety and two rules which we will enforce:

You need to know how to drive and look after the lathe and mill and the other is that two people need to

operate the equipment at all times.

I had a quiet chuckle at Rod’s suggestion that we draw inspiration from the Nannup clock. We need to

remember that this bloke was working on his clock for about 15 years before somebody decided to take

him seriously. I think I know how he feels.

If you are looking for inspiration consider this. It would be possible to return to wooden wheels if you were

so inclined. You could also make them out of aluminium and them anodize and colour them. Alternatively

you could cut a teeth rim and mount it on clear plastic or Perspex. My new design that replaces the drive

shaft with a wagon wheel works quite well. Once you have the basics you can proceed in any direction you

like. Currently I am working out how to include some stepper motors and other stuff as an added visual,

like I said, the opportunities are endless.

Finally a personal note. I will not be available every Thursday afternoon as I have been in the past which is

why we need a team of leaders.

Toxic Plants and Timbers and their effects

Everyone needs to be aware when taking the lovely pants donated on

club days that some may have toxic properties which are dangerous to

humans and pets.

The list below contains most plants commonly found in gardens,

however it is not a complete list.

Article found in Choice – April 1983

A list of toxic timbers and their properties and effects on your health was published by the club on 12th

August 2012. It is available on line at:

http://baysidewoodturners.com/media/QLD_Wood_Dust_Health_Concerns_ITD%20Guidelines%20Draft%

20-%20August%2024,%202012.pdf

It is a very comprehensive article on the effects of dust on the respiratory system and it would be advised

for all members to make themselves aware of these timbers.

A copy of this information is on the Club Notice Board.
