Louisiana Independent Tire Dealers Association
From the President, Chet Simpson
Dear Members, As the year comes quickly to an end, it is time to reflect on the year that was and the outlook for the year ahead. It has been an uncertain and uneasy year for most business owners. The economy is in a state of constant flux and the political landscape is changing before our eyes. This is why it is so important to have an organization like the Louisiana Independent Tire Dealers Association to help guide us into the future. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict what will happen with the economy or the effects of the presidential election on our business. It is vitally important for us to stand together and continue to grow the LITDA for the benefit of us all. The partnership we have formed together, will allow us to communicate new ideas to each other, and offer strategies to help maintain and grow our stores. The challenges ahead will not be easy, but I am confident that we can survive these difficult times together. As the New Year quickly approaches, I encourage all members to actively seek new members to bring to the LITDA meetings. New members allow for the continued growth and influence of the organization, as well as a catalyst to cultivate new ideas and leadership for the future. Please feel free to contact me, Chet Simpson, at (225) 344-9586 if you need any help regarding the LITDA in any regards. I look forward to the New Year and new challenges that will accompany it. Respectfully,
Chet Simpson LITDA President

Tiremakers comment on proposed
Detroit bailout When asked by www.moderntiredealer.com to comment on the proposed government bailout of Ford Motor Co., Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp., Michelin North America Inc. and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. -- both of which supply those firms with original equipment tires -- responded with statements.
"Together, the Detroit three represent less than 5% of Michelin North America's sales," said MNA officials, "Ford less than 3% of MNA sales, GM less than 2% of MNA sales and Chrysler less than 1% of MNA sales.
"We support their turnaround efforts and have expressed support (for the companies) to receive appropriate assistance from the U.S. government. We are working with each company on an individual basis to manage payment terms, orders, etc. Michelin's fitments with Ford, GM and Chrysler are primarily on their high-end brands, which are more resilient."
While Goodyear declined to discuss the bailout specifically, it did offer the following: "The effect of the current economic downturn on the whole tire industry, including Goodyear, is a decreased demand for both original equipment and replacement tires.
"We have managed our business every day, both to meet the challenges of the current environment and to be ready when the economy rebounds. Drivers in North America value their mobility and we will be ready with great products for when demand increases again."

TIA Supports NHTSA Decision To Allow Electronic Registration Option For New Tire Purchases From Independent Tire Dealers
Roy Littlefield, Tire Industry Association
Page 10 www.litda.org
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - DECEMBER 4, 2008
TIA worked with agency, other organizations on new rule; rule is expected to help increase registration rates, thus providing consumers with increased awareness of potential recalls.
Bowie, MD — Due in part to efforts by the Tire Industry Association (TIA), the Rubber Manufacturers Association and other organizations, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has codified a rule that now allows registration of new tires that have been purchased from independent tire dealers to be done electronically. It is be-lieved that this option, which will help to alert consumers of any potential recalls or other similar actions, will increase the registration rate from the currently estimated 10%. Additionally, consumers will soon have the chance to electroni-cally register their new tires themselves, only further aiding this consumer awareness effort. The new rule takes effect on January 27, 2009, but dealers can already begin with electronic registration. TIA believes that since most tire manufacturers already have electronic systems set up, and since most tire dealers have Internet-capable computers already, any additional equipment purchases or set up expenses will be minimal. "TIA is pleased to be a part of this important change in the tire registration requirements, and we believe adding the electronic registration option benefits both tire dealers and consumers by offering them a much more convenient way to have new tires registered," said TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield. "By making the registration of their new tire purchase easier, consumers will have an invaluable aid in making sure they are promptly notified of any po-tential recalls, advisories or other information, which will help ensure that they are not driving on unsafe tires."
TIA is an international association representing all segments of the tire industry, including those that manufacture, repair, recycle, sell, service or use new or retreaded tires, and also those suppliers or individuals who furnish equipment, material or services to the industry. The Tire Industry Association (TIA) has a history that spans more than 80 years and includes several name changes. Originally known as the National Tire Deal-ers & Retreaders Association (NTDRA), the organization gave birth over the years to the American Retreaders Association (ARA) and the Tire Association of North America (TANA). ARA changed its name to the International Tire & Rubber Association (ITRA) and merged with TANA in 2002 to form the current Tire Industry Association (TIA), which now represents every interest in the tire industry.

In This Tight Economy, Many Are Asking, “How Long Will My Tires Last?” TIA Has Tips That Can Help Consumers Answer That Question
Roy Littlefield, Tire Industry Association
More people are deferring purchasing new tires because of the bad economic conditions; Tire Industry Association provides tips on how to make sure tires are safe and providing maximum efficiency.
Bowie, MD — With the economy seeming to decline a little more each day, an increasing number of consumers are deferring important maintenance to their vehicles, including replacing worn and/or damaged tires. According to the Tire Industry Association (TIA), not replacing worn and/or damaged tires can cost consumers money — and, potentially, their lives. But, how can a consumer know when his/her tire should be replaced? Or, what should consumers be doing – and not doing when it comes to their tires? TIA recommends the following:
Look for wear bars in the tread grooves. Every tire is constructed with wear bar indicators between the tread grooves. These wear bars are 2/32 of an inch in height, so when the surrounding tread blocks are worn even with the wear bar, the tire has 2/32 of an inch or less tread depth, so it should be replaced. Use the “penny test” to check for tread depth. The old test still works – place a penny in a major tread groove of a tire with Lincoln’s head facing down. If the top of Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s a good sign that the tire needs to be replaced. Perform a visual inspection and check tire pressure every month. Look for any cracking and/or irregular wear, and make sure all tires are properly inflated. Drivers should check the owner’s manual or the placard on the inside of the driver-side door to determine the correct inflation, and always check
the pressure first thing in the morning, when tires are “cold.” Do not use a temporary spare tire for longer than recommended by the manufacturer. Many people are using their temporary spare, or “doughnut,” when a tire goes bad in the hope of delaying the purchase of a replacement tire. However, all “doughnut” spares are only designed for emergency use, and are NOT to be used as a day-to-day replacement tire.
According to TIA’s Senior Vice President of Training, Kevin Rohlwing, “In addition to properly rotating their tires on a regular basis and making sure their tires are properly inflated, these simple steps can help consumers ensure that they are getting the longest life possible out of their tires. And, with the average price for a set of new tires continuing to rise, proper tire maintenance will have an even more significant impact on operating costs. Rohlwing also advises that the consequences of not performing these simple steps can be disastrous – both to your wallet, and even your life. “Improper tire pressure is one of the biggest drains on fuel economy for all vehicles, and it has the potential to more than double tire costs over the lifetime of a vehicle. Most importantly, driving a vehicle with worn tires can have disastrous results, especially when road conditions are not favorable at highway speeds. And, in cases where a tire is so worn that the belt material is visible on either edge of the tread, the tire will soon fail at any speed at any time. A quick visual check of the tread surface on every tire could save someone’s life.”

GREENSBURG, Pa. – When John Fagan took over as manager of Smail Collision Center in Greensburg, Pa. he had some high hopes and steep challenges. The 23-year industry veteran took the managerial position after seeing what he describes as the “unrealized potential” of the Greensburg area. He would be run-ning a shop that was part of a large auto dealership that sold eve-rything from Kia’s to Mercedes Benz models. On the downside, the shop had been on a four-year slide in sales and profits. Pay-checks were shrinking, market share was going away, and the future was uncertain.
Fagan’s response was to implement some new processing con-cepts, but just as important, he says, were the efforts the shop took to reinvest in its employees and focus on team building. The first step involved establishing a line of communication between ownership, management and production. Everyone involved took the time to explain how the shop’s success was tied to the efforts of each of these groups. As a flat rate shop, when the business did well, everyone benefited.
“We shut down production everyday for two and a half months from 11:30 to 11:45 to have an open discussion with the employ-ees. We were able to establish that the business and the employ-ees all wanted the same things. We were able to get all of our objectives perfectly aligned,” says Fagan.
Fagan says the employees collectively answered questions like “What do we want?” and “What kind of business do we want to build?” “We discussed things like buying homes and families and paying for the education of children,” he says.
From there, the discussions eventually addressed how the busi-ness could evolve into the most “cutting-edge” shop in the area and what steps the shop would take to overcome the obstacles that it would face in meeting that goal.
“I really believe our success started when we got to know each other and what we wanted. That’s what got us started on what has
turned out to be a terrific 30-month ride,” says Fagan.
Fagan says in two and a half years, the shop has achieved growth of 28 percent in sales and over 35 percent in profits. “The staff is making better money than ever and our customer base continues to grow,” he adds.
Fagan says one vital key for employee reinvestment is for manag-ers and owners to taker a true leadership role. “It starts with you and your actions. You must be fully engaged, passionate enthusi-astic and supportive,” he says. “You are the only person that can drive change by visibly showing that you are willing to do what-ever it takes each and everyday. When your staff can truly see this from you consistently, they will become the most valuable asset of your business.”
His advice for shops planning for 2009: “Reinvest right now. Double down on your most effective asset, you. Build a team that can change and adapt quickly, that changes often, that can fix problems rapidly without blame and they will help you through these tough times.”
Looking to 2009, Fagan expects shop revenues to increase 10 percent. That’s down from the 16 percent growth he saw in 2008. Still, Fagan remains optimistic.
He’s not alone. A recent survey conducted by ABRN, shows more than half of all shops believe they will se rising revenues in 2009. The survey shows nearly 56 percent of independent repairers believing they’ll see more money next year. Eighteen percent believe their revenues will decrease while 29 percent believe profits will remain the same. Of those looking for increased reve-nue, 44 percent believe revenue will rise between six and ten percent. Twenty-seven percent believe their revenues will grow between 11 and twenty percent.
ABRN will continue releasing its survey findings on the state of the in-dustry in its January 2009 edition and on-line at www.search-autoparts.com in the days and weeks ahead.
