Profile of Non-Returning Sophomores Fall 2006 to Fall 2007
Executive Summary
This report contains descriptive information about students classified as sophomores who were enrolled at Baylor University during Fall 2006 but did not return in Fall 2007. Students who entered Baylor in Fall 2006 as first-year students or transfer students and were classified as sophomores are excluded.
• Of the 2,570 continuing sophomores enrolled in Fall 2006, 2,312 (90.0%) returned in Fall 2007.
• Females retained at a higher rate (58.4%) than males (41.6%). Minority students retained at a lower rate (29.2%) than non-minority students (70.8%).
• Sophomores who retained at Baylor in Fall 2007 had higher mean entrance test scores (1204 SAT / 25 ACT) than those sophomores who did not return (1173 SAT / 24 ACT).
• Subsequent enrollment at another institution for the non-returning sophomores was tracked using data from the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). Of the 258 sophomores who did not return, the NSC had Fall 2007 enrollment information on 114 (44.2%) of these students. The largest group of those students tracked by NSC enrolled at a four-year public institution.
• Of those students tracked by NSC, 24 (21.1%) enrolled at McLennan Community College in Fall 2007.
Detailed Report
This report contains descriptive information about students classified as sophomores who were enrolled at Baylor University during Fall 2006 but did not return in Fall 2007. Students who entered Baylor in Fall 2006 as first-year students or transfer students and were classified as sophomores are excluded. Included in this report is information about the following topics:
Gender Residence Hall High School Quartile
Minority Status Religious Affiliation Academic Index Citizenship Status Entrance Test Scores Probation Status Racial/Ethnic Group Full-Time/Part-Time Status Program of Study State of Permanent Address
There were 2,570 continuing sophomores enrolled in Fall 2006. Of these students, 2,312 (90.0%) enrolled in Fall 2007 and 258 (10.0%) did not return. In order to seek additional information on the students who did not return, the Office of Institutional Research & Testing (IRT) submitted a file of these students to the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). The NSC is a national repository of student records used for student degree and enrollment verification. The “Student Tracker” service from the NSC enables institutions to tap the nation’s largest enrollment database and track where students ultimately enroll.
2
IRT submitted the file of the 258 non-returning sophomores. The NSC had Fall 2007 enrollment information on 114 (44.2%) of these students. NSC provided information for each of these students including institution of matriculation, matriculation dates, institution type, and institution location. One item to note is that the University of Texas – Austin does not participate in the NSC database. Therefore, UT will not be listed as a transferring institution in this report. The largest group of the non-returning students tracked using the NSC data enrolled in public four-year institutions. Table 1 breaks down enrollment by type of institution.

Appendix I contains detailed information for the Fall 2006 sophomores who returned to Baylor in Fall 2007 compared to those who did not return. The entire population of non-returning students (258) is examined as well as those students who were tracked by NSC according to institution type as defined in Table 1. Appendix II contains detailed information for students who enrolled at one of the top four transferring institutions as tracked by NSC. Table 2 provides a summary of biographic and demographic information for Fall 2006 sophomores who returned to Baylor in Fall 2007 compared to students who did not return to Baylor. See Appendix I for details. A smaller percentage of students who did not return were female (56.2%) compared to students who re-enrolled at Baylor (58.4%). A smaller percentage of students who did not return were minorities (27.9%) compared to students who returned to Baylor (29.2%). A larger percentage of students who did not return were Baptist (43.4%) as compared to those students who returned to Baylor (37.6%).

Notes:1. Although submission of entrance test scores generally is required in the admission process, in each entering class there were a small number of studentswho were admitted without entrance test scores. Therefore, the sum of SAT N plus ACT N does not necessarily equal the total class size (N).
2. In this table, the highest SAT score is compared to the highest ACT score, and only the better score is retained.
