Scarborough Salt MarshThe Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center is conveniently located on Route 9, just up the road a mile from Bayley’s. They offer a variety of guided and self-guided walks and canoe tours, in addi-tion to exhibits, a nature store, and canoe rentals, enabling you to experi-ence the Scarborough Marsh up close and personal.
Eastern Trail NetworkOne of the most scenic coastal sections of the Eastern Trail (The ET is part of the Eastern Coast Greenway Bicycle Trail that extends from Maine to Florida) con-nects Pine Point Road (Rt. 9) with Black Point Road (Rt. 207). You’ll find a conve-nient parking lot 1/4 mile east of Maine Audubon’s Scarborough Marsh nature center on Rt. 9. The trail heads north crossing the Scarborough Marsh with its wildlife and views of Maine’s largest saltwater marsh. The 12-foot-wide trail in this 2.5 mile segment features a hard packed gravel surface that is level.
Fort Williams Park andPortland Head Light
Fort Williams Park stood with guns protecting Portland Harbor until it was officially closed in 1963. Located off Rt. 77 (Shore Road) the fort was taken over by the town of Cape Elizabeth which maintains the property for all to enjoy. inside of Fort Williams is the road that leads to one of the most pictur-esque light houses on the east coast, Portland Head Light. This light house was commissioned in 1790 by George Washington himself.
Portland’s Old Port DistrictThe Old Port District of Portland is located on the Portland waterfront. Many commercial buildings have been revitalized and transformed into quaint shops, galleries and restaurants. You can stroll down the cobblestone streets and browse for hours. Here you’ll find trolley tours of historic Portland and cruises on Casco Bay.
Cabela’sCabela’s of Scarborough is located on the Haigis Parkway at Exit 42 of the Maine Turnpike. in addition to offer-ing quality outdoor merchandise, the 130,000 square foot showroom is an educational and entertainment attrac-tion featuring a decor of museum-quali-ty animal displays, huge aquariums and trophy animals interacting in realistic re-creations of their natural habitats.
L.L. BeanA century ago, Leon Leonwood Bean sent out his first shipment - 100 pairs of Maine Hunting Shoes. After 90 pairs were returned, L.L. kept his word and refunded the purchase price. He cor-rected the problems and, with undi-minished confidence, mailed more bro-chures. Throughout the decades, L.L. continued to see the value of keep-ing customers satisfied at any cost. He improved the company’s service to include keeping his store open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Located in Freeport.
