Executive Summary

As a signatory to the Covenant since 2001, Bayer is committed to evaluating solutions which minimise the

impacts of packaging on the environment. The Bayer Group in Australia Australian Packaging Covenant

2010 - 2015 Action Plan outlines the activities and initiatives that we will undertake over the next five years

to integrate the Sustainable Packaging Guidelines into our business and identify opportunities to improve

performance across our supply chain.

As a brand owner of imported and locally manufactured products Bayer has commited resources to establish

a packaging covenant committee whose function will be to review existing packaging and develop internal

processes to ensure all new product packaging is assessed during the development phase.

This action plan will cover all Bayer branded products that are not sold for in-house use, agricultural and

livestock use, brand to brand, or covered by other programs that deliver equivalent outcomes and will cover

all Bayer entities in Australia.

Recently acquired companies will be placed into this action plan as part of their integration into the Bayer

Group.

About Bayer

Bayer is a global enterprise with core competencies in the fields of health care, nutrition and high-tech

materials. Bayer’s missions statement, “Bayer: Science for a Better Life” is core to the production of Bayer

products which are designed to benefit people and improve their quality of life. As an inventor company,

Bayer plans to continue setting trends in research-intensive areas. Innovation is the foundation for

competitiveness and growth, and thus for the company’s success in the future.

Bayer’s knowledge and products are helping to diagnose, alleviate or cure diseases, improving the quality

and adequacy of the global food supply, and contributing significantly to an active, modern lifestyle. Bayer’s

expertise and innovative capability also enable us to offer solutions for protecting the earth’s climate and

addressing the consequences of climate change.

In Australia and New Zealand, Bayer has invested significantly in local research and manufacturing for more

than 80 years. Divided into three business groups: Bayer HealthCare, Bayer CropScience and Bayer

MaterialScience, Bayer Australia Limited consists of Bayer HealthCare (Consumer Care, Bayer HealthCare

Pharmaceuticals, Bayer AnimalHealth) and the relevant support divisions, while Bayer CropScience Pty Ltd

and Bayer MaterialScience Pty Ltd operate as two separate legal entities.

Bayer employs 850 people in Australia and New Zealand, and 108,600 people worldwide. In 2010 Bayer

generated A$784 million in revenue in Australia and New Zealand. Bayer Australia and New Zealand is a

fully owned subsidiary of Bayer AG based in Leverkusen, Germany.

Head office for Bayer Australia Limited is located at 875 Pacific Highway, Pymble, Sydney, NSW. Other

locations for the Bayer Group in Australia include Hawthorn and Cheltenham in Victoria, Pinkenba and

Cannon Hill in Queensland, Adelaide in South Australia, and Kwinana and Bentley in Western Australia.

Sustainability at Bayer

Sustainable development forms an integral part of Bayer’s global corporate policy, which is geared toward

long-term success and high-quality solutions. In the long term, we can only ensure business success if we

take social needs and environmental aspects into account as well as economic considerations. Our

Bayer Group in Australia, Australian Packaging Covenant Action Plan July 2010 – June 2015 Page 5 of 5

responsibility for humankind and the environment extends across all business and countries, and our focus

lies specifically in those areas where the challenges we face and our responsibility are the greatest.

Sustainable development objectives are an integral part of our management process. With our 2006+

program of objectives, we have set ourselves ambitious goals in the areas of innovation, product

stewardship, excellence in corporate management, social responsibility and responsibility for the

environment. The program was expanded at the end of 2007 to include the Bayer Climate Program Goals.

For Bayer, Climate protection starts with its own plants and facilities, with the focus being on the energy

supply and optimization of production processes. As part of the Bayer Climate Program, new greenhouse

gas reduction targets were set for the three subgroups for the time corridor 2005 to 2020 aligned to their

different structures and product portfolios (see table 1).

In further development of our global sustainability strategy, Bayer has established a Sustainability Program

which comprises of eight so-called lighthouse projects that illustrate the focus of our strategy.

1. Global access to health care: Bayer HealthCare’s goal is to develop innovative Pharmaceuticals,

diagnostic options and medical equipment that benefit patients worldwide and improve their quality of

life. We contribute to these solutions to alliances to help provide health care worldwide.

Bayer Group in Australia, Australian Packaging Covenant Action Plan July 2010 – June 2015 Page 6 of 6

2. Nutrition for a growing world population: as an innovative leader, Bayer CropScience provides farmers

with modern crop protection options and new solutions based on plant breeding and biotechnology to

safeguard and increase harvest yields. We contribute this expertise to partnerships involving all players

in the value chain that are aimed at achieving greater amounts of high-quality food.

3. Solutions for climate protection and resource use: Bayer MaterialScience develops innovative materials

and processes to increase energy efficiency. This includes the company’s own production activities, as

well as products for sustainable buildings, lighter weight vehicles and efficient wind turbines.

In Australia and New Zealand, Bayer has embarked on a program to reduce its own environmental footprint.

The program, named B-Green, focuses on four key areas:

1. reduction of greenhouse gas emissions;

2. reduced consumption of water;

3. reduction of waste; and

4. engagement in the community (internal and external)

The B-Green program encourages our staff to think, act and live in an environmentally responsible manner.

Bayer educates and engages employees to actively contribute towards our environmental objectives. In

addition, a B-Green team consisting of representatives from each business group meet on a bi-monthly

basis to discuss ideas and identify opportunities within business operations.

Bayer Group in Australia, Australian Packaging Covenant Action Plan July 2010 – June 2015 Page 7 of 7

Bayer is committed to improving its environmental performance, and to support this has undertaken a

number of initiatives. Some examples are:

• Energy audits across five sites in Australia and New Zealand

• Waste and water audits across three major sites in Australia

• Implemented a green car policy requiring new fleet vehicles to meet an emissions standard of wherever

practice, <220 grams CO2-e per kilometre (currently), target by 2013 <200 grams CO2-e per kilometre

dependant on technology.

• Installation of timers, motion sensors and energy efficient lighting.

• Expanding existing recycling programs to all sites (paper, cardboard, aluminium, plastic, toner

cartridges).

• Signatory to the Plastic and Chemical Industry Association’s Sustainability Leadership Framework

Bayer supports the communities in which it operates through involvement in many projects in areas of

education, science, health, environment and culture. For Bayer, aligning corporate actions to sustainable

development principles means balancing economic, ecological and social responsibilities. Bayer employees

have actively participated in a number of environmental projects in various sites in Australia and New

Zealand. For example, in 2010, employees from Animal Health, Supply Chain and Bayer Corporate

Business Services volunteered at Garigal National Park to help rehabilitate a former landfill site back to

natural bushland.

Bayer is the major sponsor of CarbonKids, an innovative educational program developed by the

Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) for primary and high school

students that combines the latest in environmental science with education in sustainability. The program

aims to help students better understand climate change and encourage actions that will help them become

more sustainable.

BAYERBoost is an environmental scholarship scheme aimed at giving senior secondary school and

undergraduate tertiary students experience in environmental research or restoration during their summer

break. BAYERBoost scholarships are funded by Bayer Australia, and administered by the Australian

Geographic Society.

Products

Bayer HealthCare Bayer HealthCare represents over half of the Bayer business in Australia and New Zealand and has three

focus areas:

• Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals

• Bayer ConsumerCare

• Bayer AnimalHealth

Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals is our specialty pharmaceuticals business concentrating on:

• Women’s Health (such as contraception)

• General Medicine (prescription products for general practitioners or specialists in areas such as high

blood pressure and venous thromboembolism)

• Specialty Medicine (treatments to improve the quality of life for suffers of diseases such as multiple

sclerosis, haemophilia and certain types of cancer)

• Diagnostic Imaging (technology to help detect diseases)

Approximately 71% of Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals products are sold to a consumer via pharmacies,

while the remaining products are sold directly to hospitals for internal use.

Products sold to hospitals for in-house use are not considered under this action plan as the end consumer is

an institution.

Bayer ConsumerCare is a highly regarded provider of over-the-counter (OTC) medications and nutritional

supplements in Australia and New Zealand. Our prestigious track record began in 1897 with the discovery of

acetylsalicyclic acid (ASA), which Bayer launched as Aspirin in 1899. Our top brands today, distributed

through Pharmacies and supermarkets, include Berrocca®, Canesten®, Bepanthen®, Novalac®, Aspro®

and Elevit®.

Bayer AnimalHealth develops products for both companion and farm animals. Cat and dog owners rely on

our leading products such as Advocate®, Advantage® and Advantix® to control parasites including fleas,

ticks and worms. We also help farmers protect the health of their sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry from

parasites and infectious diseases and offer pain relief and farm hygiene products.

Bayer Group in Australia, Australian Packaging Covenant Action Plan July 2010 – June 2015 Page 9 of 9

All farm animal products have been excluded from this action plan as the end consumer is a business

therefore the packaging is not covered by the Covenant.

Likewise, companion animal products sold to veterinarians for in-house use have been excluded from this

action plan.

Bayer CropScience A trusted supplier of crop protection, pest control and high value seeds, Bayer CropScience encompasses

three businesses:

• Crop Protection

• Environmental Science

• BioScience

Crop Protection develops and manufactures high performance insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and

seed treatments for the broadacre, horticulture, cotton and viticulture markets. Building on our long-term

commitment to Australian agriculture, we innovate together with Australian farmers to bring smart solutions

to market, enabling them to grow healthier crops more efficiently and more sustainably.

All Crop Protection products are excluded from this action plan as the end consumers are agricultural

businesses.

Environmental Science specialises in developing and marketing pest, weed and plant-disease control

solutions for non-crop situations. This encompasses professional and rural pest control, termite

management, mosquito control, turf and amenity horticulture, industrial vegetation management, stored

product protection and the home garden. Some of the brands include Confidor®, Maxforce®, Quickbayt®,

Racumin®, Tempo® and Kordon®.

BioScience uses plant biotechnology and conventional breeding techniques to improve the quality of crops

and vegetables, increase yields and create sustainable agricultural solutions. BioScience activities are

focused on the areas of vegetable seeds and agricultural seeds.

All BioScience products are excluded from this action plan as the end consumers are agricultural businesses

therefore the packaging is not covered by the Covenant.

Bayer MaterialScience

Key customer sectors include the automotive and construction industries, medical, furniture, the electrical

sector and manufacturers of sports and leisure articles.

For future growth in Australia, the business is particularly looking at ways to introduce new technologies that

support our growing and increasingly mobile outdoor lifestyle, plus offer environmentally sustainable

solutions through eco-friendly buildings.

Key areas of expertise are as follows:

Polycarbonates are used in a diverse range of applications such as car headlamps, CDs and DVDs, light

switches, and medical equipment. Bayer is the leading Australian-based manufacturer of polycarbonate

roofing, wall cladding and solid sheet. These are sold under the well known Laserlite® and Makrolon®

brands in Australia.

Coatings, Adhesives and Specialty Raw Materials, based mainly on polyurethane chemistry, are tailor-

made by Bayer to protect items such as cars, oil platforms, concrete slabs and timber floors from

weathering, corrosion and stains.

Polyurethanes boast a wide range of applications: insulated panels for refrigerators and construction,

mattresses, upholstered furniture, car seats and sport shoes to mention a few. Thermoplastic polyurethanes

combine the characteristics of rubber and plastic. They are extensively used in mining, automotive, sports

and electrical applications. They are also important to industries operating in extreme conditions such as

offshore oil drilling.

All MaterialScience products have been excluded from this action plan. Coatings, Adhesives, Specialty raw

materials and polyurethanes are sold to businesses for in-house use. Polycarbonate sheeting is sold in bulk

to retailers who then sells to the consumer as multiple or individual sheets. Polycarbonate sheeting is not

covered by the covenant as there is no packaging material for the end consumer to dispose.

Place in the supply chain

Bayer HealthCare Bayer HealthCare’s position in the Supply Chain is as a brand owner. Bayer HealthCare Australia imports

the majority of its products from other countries. A small number of products are manufactured by local 3rd

party manufacturers, of which a number are signatories to the Australian Packaging Covenant. Similarly,

Bayer HealthCare also uses 3rd

party warehousing to store and distribute its products.

Bayer CropScience Bayer CropScience is a brand owner of agricultural science products which are sold on local and

international markets. Products are imported and manufactured locally and sold to commercial distributors,

wholesalers and large scale commercial farmers.

Bayer MaterialScience Bayer MaterialScience’s position in the Supply Chain is as a brand owner. Products are manufactured

locally and also imported from overseas. Products are warehoused by Bayer MaterialScience for sale and

distribution to wholesalers. There is no direct selling to the public.

Packaging As a signatory to the Covenant since 2001, Bayer is committed to evaluating packaging solutions which

assist in minimising the effects of packaging on the environment. Packaging plays an important role for

Bayer and our customers, ensuring quality, safety and security of products, communicating information to

the user and enhancing shelf life. To ensure that our products are delivered to our customers in the same

way they left the manufacturing site Bayer utilises a variety of packaging materials. Those materials are as

detailed in appendix 1.

Bayer sources its packaging materials from a wide variety of packaging suppliers both locally and

internationally. Bayer expects all of its suppliers to share the principles expressed in the Bayer Supplier

Code of Conduct. These principles demonstrate how Bayer assumes its responsibility concerning social,

ecological and ethical standards and how Bayer Group companies put into practice the principles of

sustainable development in their daily operations.

Bayer Group in Australia, Australian Packaging Covenant Action Plan July 2010 – June 2015 Page 13 of 13

Bayer also participates in drumMUSTER, a National program established for the collection and recycling of

cleaned eligible crop protection and on-farm animal health chemical containers. The program covers non

returnable metal and plastic containers which are larger than 1 litre / kilogram and up to 205 litres / kilograms

and carry the drumMUSTER eligible container logo. Bayer’s AnimalHealth, Crop Protection and

EnvironmentalScience business groups contribute 4 cents per litre / kilogram of product sold as part their

participation in the program. A list of products included under the drumMUSTER program is outlined in

appendix 2.

Schedule for packaging reviews Timetables have been established for each business group for the evaluation of existing packaging. Each

year will be broken up into the following quarters:

• Q1 (Jul. – Sep.)

• Q2 (Oct. – Dec.)

• Q3 (Jan. – Mar.)

• Q4 (Apr. – Jun.).

Packaging will be assessed by brand for each business group with Bayer’s Australian Packaging Covenant

Committee responsible for assessing all existing packaging. The Committee will be established by the end of

quarter four for the 2010 – 2011 period.
