BaybayinStyles&TheirSourcesAlthoughitiscommonlybelievedthateachprovinceinthePhilippineshaditsownancientalphabet,Spanishwritersofthe16thcenturyreportedthatthepracticeofwritingwasfoundonlyintheManilaareaatthetimeoffirstcontact.Writingspreadtotheotherislandslater,inaboutthemiddleofthe1500s.Forthisreason,theSpaniardsusuallycalledtheancientFilipinoscript"Tagalogletters,"regardlessofthelanguageforwhichitwasused.
Thebaybayinscript,asitisknowntoday,felloutofuseinmostareasbytheendofthe1600s.Inthe19thcentury,historiansgatheredoldsamplesofbaybayinwritingfromvarioussourcesandlocationsandassembledtheminchartsforcomparison,notingthesourcelocationorlanguageofeachspecimen.Mostofthesesamehistorianscametotheconlcusionthatallthevariationsinthelettershapeswereduetothetastesandwritingstylesoftheidividualswhowrotetheoriginalspecimensandnotduetoregionaldifferences.Inotherwords,therewasonlyonebaybayin.But,inthe20thcenturymanywriterscopiedthecomparisonchartsintotheirschooltextbookswithlittleornoexplanationattached.Thusmostreaderswereledtobelievethateachsampleofwritingwasadifferentalphabetaccordingtoitstitleinthechart.
Therewasactuallymuchmorevariationinthehandwritingfromoneindividualtothenext,evenwithinthesamegeographicalregion,thanthereisinthischartofsupposedlydistinctalphabets.Comparethischarttotheexamplesofbaybayinwritingonthepages,TheBaybayinasWrittenbyFilipinosandBaybayinHandwritingofthe1600s.(Readmoreaboutbaybayinvariantsinthemainarticle.)
Thisisachartofsomebaybayinformsandtheoriginalsourceofeach.Theyaresortedchronologicallyandgroupedbytheirfamiliarregionnamesbuttheyarenotdistinctalphabetsfromdifferentregionsorlanguagestheyareonlyvariationsoftypestylesandhandwriting.Therearedetailsforeachbelow.
