    MAY,

    1978

    Driving cross-country

    towards

Onitsha as we did in March we witnessed the

farm products that flov/ from the breadbasket of Nigeria, the Cross River State,

Indeed, crops grow well and some of the largest

    root

    plants we have

    ever

    seen

come from th is area. Also , cas sava , maize,

    r ice, and f ru i t

    Traffic

    slowed

    to

    a stop

as roadwork was being done a t

    an

    intersect ion near Onitsha,

    As we

    sa t

    there

    in

    our

    car

    we had

    to

    turn

    off

    the

    air-conditioner

    and open

    our

    windows

to the sounds of the hawkers and smell of exhaust. Traffic on the

    opposite

side of the road moved past. Inscriptions on lorries

    (trucks)

    and passanger

vehicles read, Golden Rule, Blessed i-Iansion, The Lord is

    My

    Shepherd,

Business Express, Dubonnet, and Owerri-Lagos, to mention a few. Along

    the roadside

    mechanics pounded and

    welded

    on broken motor

    parts.

    Motor

    Parking

    lots

    filled up,

    tea

    and bread

    were

    sold

    at

    small

    tables, hawkers

    hurried

    up

    and

down stopping ,ai .eeeh car-selllhg; large loaves of bread and Amstel .Malta (a new

    vitamin enriched drink

    which

    the

    government

    has just recently banned).

    One

    malt

    salesman

    sitting

    on

    his box

    had

    his handkerchief

    tied on

    his

    head

    to pro

    tect him from

    the

sun and the dirt . His bottle opener dangled from

    the

    hankie.

    Children

    hawked

    toy pistols, cigarettes, sox, hankies,

    chewing

    sticks, kola

nuts, and perhaps i f one wanted any other thing they

    would

go off and find i t

    for

    you.

    There

    was

    plenty of

    shopping

    time as

    we

    sat in the

    non-moving

    traffic.

    Road signs

amidst block companies and bui ld ing construct ion

    advertised

    Bosch

Batteries Your Best Friend on the Road, Ultra

    Sheen

    (Don gave me a coupon

    for

    this on

    my birthday

    --

    to

    make

    the skin young again )

    and

    The Architect -

First Choice Paint - Nigerluxl After an hour we finally cleared the intersect

    tion. A large

    modern

    building off to the

    left

    in

    newly

    painted blue and gold

yielded a Premier Brewerie Plant sign . Hand-push

    carts

    ruled the road as we

    crept

    along. One

    cart loaded with

    yams was being pushed by

    three men

    and

    pulled

    by

    one man.

    Some

    were

loaded with building blocks and construction materials.

    People darted in and

    out,

    bicycles careered back

    and

    forth, motorbike sirens

    screamed and

    hurtled past.

    In two and a

    half

    hours of heavy

    traffic

    we travell

ed the 66 miles to Enugu where

    we

    spent the n ight.

    The

    ri-xt

    morning

    we

    proceeded

    e^st

    on 35

    mph

    road.

    Occasional

    good

    stretches

    were

interspersed with chuck holes, pot holes, and

    no

    road at

    all.

    We .

stopped for pet ro l in Abakaliki. Here we turned south towards the Cross River.

    The

    landscape

    is flat

    and

    rocky

    with occasional

    clumps

    of huge trees

    off

    in the

    distance.

    We

    searched for a tree to

    shade

    us from the

    noonday sun

    where we

    could eat our

    lunch,aHd.,

finally.-found one;.that we could .gain-access to from the

    road.

It; was on a section of old road no longer in use. Flies and

    buzzing

insects joined us. Another hour brought us to the ferry.

    We

    waited a few

    minutes

    to board

    and after

    the five minute,

    1,50

    crossing

    we

    landed . at Ekori

    Beach. A

    new laterite

    road took us

    right

    Into Ekori.

    We

    went first to the

new Bible School and church builc'ing

    that is

    being constructed to see

    how far

along i t was. Then to the house that Capt, and Mrs. Eni gave the mission for

    a

    medical

    f ac i l i t y

    This

    is

    the^largest

    house

    yard

    of Capt.

    Eni

n Saturday morning reading in Colossians 2 My purpose in that

    they may

be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the

    riches

of complete understanding, in order that they

    may know

    the mystery of

    God

    nai^ly^

    Christ, in whom are

    hidden

all the t reasures of wisdom

    and

    know

    Ilam

    arrived

    to buy

    Efic

    hymnbooks. After

    breakfast we

    drove between

    tree-lined

    farms to

    Assiga

    to

    get

    the program

    for

    the

    conference of

    th e church-

    es that began

    in

    the

    evening.

    In

    the

afternoon we read, studied, cooked wash

    ed dished and

    some

of thh ^villagers- came.to greet ua. At diiak we drove to the

    AJere church

    fo r

    our

    f irst service.

Lanterns were brought as the soft evening

    glow disappeared over the

    river

and the blackness and mosquitoes surrounded us .

    For

    half an

hour the men harmonized hymns in the Efic

    language

    - -

    very lovely .

Don preached on The Riches of God.

    On

    Sunday morning we

    sang

    for half

    an

    hour

    as people kept

    arriving

    from

Ekori, ISkpani and Assiga on foot,

    bicycles

    and local transportation. Then we

    a l l

    formed two

    l ines

and began singing to the inspired leading

    of

    Elder Shadrach

    and

    made our

way through th e center of the

    village

    to the i cbeach.

    Evangelist

    John

    Egbe entered the

    water in the

    rocky shoreline and the three

    candidates

    pre

    pared

    for baptism. The

    singing continued as

    three new

    souls

    confessed

    Jesus as

    thei r

    Saviour

    and

    were baptized for

    th e forgiveness of their

    sins. The

    heat

    and

humidity increased perceptibly dur ing our

    walk

    back to the

    church,

    and now as

we began to worship, the wind began to blow and the sky grew dark.. Soon th e

    rain

    bat tered down

    on

    the roof

    to

    th e

    sa t i s f ac t ion

    of a l l the

    farmers

    who

    had

    spent long hours the

    preceding

    day

    planting.

We were cooled by the rain and

refreshed by the Gospel message that John brought to us. We then

    gathered a-

    round

    the

    Lord's

    Table

w ith o ur N ig eria n b ro th ers as

    a l l

    of

    you

    were

    doing

    on

    His

    day .

    After church we sold Bibles

    and hymnbooks, wrote

    out baptismal ce r t i f i

cates, and gave out medicine Maria

    came

    with baby Gabriel

    e

    had sent

    her

    to the hospital

    across

    the river with

    him

    as

    his swollen belly

    indicated

    mal

    nutri t ion.

    The

    Assiga

    church had

    given

    her the money

    to

go . We paid the medi

    cal

    expenses and urged her to

    take

    him back

    again.

    He seemed

    some better

    but

    n o t well

    Later

    that

    The principle

    of

    the

    of the

    purity of

    observable

    among all true Christians; and

    (2)

    the practice of orthodoxy of

    orthodoxy

    of

    heart o f these

    sets

    of principles

    is

    to

    the

    love

    of

    God

    and

    the

    God,

    it t u rns

    But

    if

    we

the holiness of God without the love of God we prac
