Profile Christopher Knabe, licensed German architect, Member of BDA German Association of Architects, energy efficiency designer, LEED GA and DGNB consultant, is Director and Head of the Shanghai office of OBERMEYER China. His main responsibility covers sus-tainable urban planning, energy-efficiency, green architecture and project management. Mr. Knabe has played a key role in a number of significant projects in China. His projects have been awarded the “German Façade Design Prize”, 1st Prize of “EU Competition for Bioclimatic Urban Redevelopment” and other honors. After studying in Germany, Japan and United States he published professional writings on industrial design, urban space and sustainable urban development. He is author of ‘Shaking the Foundations. Japanese Architects in Interview. Profile Prof. Dr. Bing ZHANG is currently the Chief Planner of the China Academy of Urban

Planning and Design (CAUPD), which has been the leading research and consulting

institution of planning since its founding in 1954. He has performed outstanding work in the

theory and practice of urban and regional planning, particularly in the fields of historic city

conservation and the strategic urban planning. He has been awarded many prizes in

planning research and practice. He is a member of the editorial board of several

international journals, such as Planning Theory and Practice (Royal Town Planning

Institute, UK), disP (ETH, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich), and Planning

Perspective (International Planning History Society). Since 2000 his pioneering

experiences in strategic planning in China for metropolitan Guangzhou (2000), Nanjing

(2001), and Wuhan (2004) have brought him an enviable reputation among professional

planners. In 2005 he worked as regional planning team leader for Yangtze River Delta

Region, organized by the Ministry of Construction, provincial governments of Shanghai

City, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui. In the period 2007-2011 he was group leader in the

research project ‘The Spatial Development of Mega Urban Regions in China’, funded by

the Ministry of Science and Technology, PRC.

Profile After graduating from Tsinghua University and completing a PhD degree, he worked at

Harvard University as a visiting scholar. Yue is a full-time professor at Tsinghua University,

specializing in sustainable urban planning and urbanization trends in China. Over the last

decade, Yue has been a chief investor on 30 projects, funded by China MST, MHURD and

Beijing MUCP. He has been involved in the publishing of over 40 journals and has won a

series of important academic awards, including the Asia-Pacific Gold and Global Bronze

Prize of Holcim Award for Sustainable Construction, China National Urban Planning

Award, etc.

Profile Peter J. Kindel AIA ASLA is a Hong Kong-based Director for the global design firm

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM). SOM’s 80-years of multi-disciplinary practice has

created some of the world’s most iconic buidlings and places, from the world’s tallest

building to successful urban redevelopment projects in many global cities. Mr. Kindel is a

licensed architect and landscape architect who specializes in large-scale mixed-use
