Battle of the Somme

The Battle of the Somme was one of the largest battles of the First World War .

By late autumn there was more than 1.5 million casualties had been suffered by the forces involved

The attack was launched upon a 30 kilometre front, from north of the Somme river between Arras and Albert,

The war ran from 1 July until 18 November, at which point it was called off.

British forces comprised by far the bulk of the offensive forces,

There was a loss of 58,000 British troops

It is implicated to have been one of the bloodiest military operations ever on recorded.
