The Detective ReturnsArthur Conan Doyle stepped out into the cold air with his golf club in hand and aduffle bag slung over his shoulder. 1901 was going to be a fine year, he couldalready tell; the early-January skies were overcast, but that did nothing to detractfrom the feeling of hope in the air. Arthur, however, was not happy, no matterhow often he tried to tell himself otherwise. After all, his writing was going well;he had published several short stories in magazines, and they had been wellreceived by critics. The public, however, was a very different thing.

1

Arthur was a writer, and rather a famous one. He had created a fictional detectivesome time ago, in 1887, named Sherlock Holmes. He had based the character inpart on one of his professors from medical school, a man named Joseph Bell, andalso on a character created by Edgar Allen Poe, an American author. After Arthurbegan writing mystery stories about Sherlock Holmes, Holmes had become soloved by audiences around the world that Arthur had simply kept writing more. After all, it paid the bills.

2

Arthur had originally wanted to write more significant stories though, and he hada special fondness for writing historical fiction. Historical fiction was meaningful, and critics took it seriously. Mystery stories weren’t for serious writers; they weretrite stories for the common reader, not the sort of stories that would go down inhistory. No one would remember Arthur Conan Doyle for creating SherlockHolmes; historical fiction would be his ticket to being renowned as a great author.

3

So he killed his own creation. He wrote a story in which the Great Detective fell offthe edge of a cliff in a battle with his enemy, the evil genius Professor Moriarty. Itwas his finest work, and when the story was finally published, he felt so relieved. The responsibility of writing about the world’s finest sleuth was finally off Arthur’sshoulders. It was over, and he could finally focus on his career, or so he thought. He hadn’t anticipated how emphatically the public would hate his choice to let goof Sherlock Holmes. It was his creation, after all, surely it couldn’t affect anyoneelse that much. He was mistaken. After the story was published, the fans he hadbuilt up over the years wore black armbands to show their grief over the death oftheir favorite literary character. People who recognized him in the streets insultedhim when he went shopping, and they spat on his shoes when he went out fordinner. It was ridiculous, because Sherlock Holmes was just a character. Therewas no way they could love him so much, for he wasn’t real.

4

Arthur wrote about Sherlock Holmes’ last adventure, which he titled "The FinalProblem," in 1893, and he thought the initial outrage would die down quitequickly. He was so very wrong. It was now 1901 and people still wrote him lettersasking him when he would write another Sherlock Holmes adventure. It was one

of the first things new acquaintances asked him when Arthur introduced himself, and he was getting tired of it. This year, though, would be better, Arthur wascertain of it.

Arthur saw a silhouetted figure on the green golf course up ahead, waving at him.It was his friend, Fletcher Robison. He and Fletcher enjoyed playing golf togetheron occasion; it was one of Arthur’s favorite hobbies.

6

“Arthur,” Fletcher greeted him, “How are you?”7

“Well enough,” Arthur said. Fletcher laughed.8

“That sounds uninspired,” he said. “Is your writing not coming along?”9

“No, I’m afraid not,” Arthur said. “I feel as though I am running out of ideas.”10

“You should come up to Dartmoor for a visit,” Fletcher told him, speaking of thetown he was born and raised in. “Plenty of inspiration up there, I would think. Didyou know that one of the manors up there is terribly haunted?”

11

Arthur resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “I have written plenty of ghost stories,”he said.

12

“Ah, but this one is haunted by a dog,” Fletcher said, grinning widely when he sawArthur raise his eyebrows in surprise. “Ah, I figured you hadn’t heard that onebefore.” It was true; Arthur had heard many ghost stories, but never one about adog. He could sense a prickling already in the back of his mind, as he always feltwhen an idea was forming. If he closed his eyes, he could already see a forest fullof mist, glowing eyes, a smoking pipe, and a tall, thin figure with a nose like abeak.

13

Perhaps, he thought, it was time to revive Sherlock Holmes.14

The Little GardenAntonia Miller should have felt that she was living her dream. She was living in

the city and working under one of the greatest chefs in America in a four-starrestaurant called The Little Garden. And she was happy, really, she was. Being anassistant in a constantly-bustling kitchen was difficult work, but she feltenormously satisfied at the end of the day. She just wished that she could bemore involved in actually making the food.

1

Most of Antonia’s job involved chopping vegetables. It was important, sheknew that. The head chef, Violet, was always the one to come up with the menufor the day, arrange the restaurant’s daily specials, and plate the food as it cameout — just as it should be. Chef Violet Greene was a genius when it came to food, and her plates looked like works of art.

2

So it was a surprise when Chef Violet came into the kitchen one afternoon andannounced, “We need a new dessert.”

3

The Little Garden was well-known for its desserts; for the restaurant tosuddenly need an entirely new one was bizarre to say the least.

4

“I fear that The Little Garden has fallen into a routine,” Chef Violet continued,“and I am running out of inspiration these days. Does anyone here have anyunusual flavor combinations in mind?”

5

“Chocolate and caramel?” asked Jordan, who usually was left in charge ofpreparing meat.

6

“Something we haven’t done before,” Chef Violet said.7

“Carrot and cherry?” someone else suggested.8

“Too savory,” Chef Violet said.9

Antonia debated. She liked making desserts at home. Some of her friendsasked her why she ever bothered cooking when she worked in a restaurant all daylong, but Antonia enjoyed creating new flavor combinations, and she liked seeingwhere they took her. The only thing that made her nervous — and it always had, ever since cooking school — was letting other people try her food, if it didn’toriginate from a recipe. It was why she generally preferred working for anotherchef, rather than trying to run her own restaurant. She liked creating food, shejust didn’t like being judged for it. Still, this was her chance to do something alittle more exciting than chopping vegetables. Antonia raised her hand, like shewas still a school kid. Chef Violet pointed to her, an expectant expression on herface.

“What about lime, coconut, and basil?” asked Antonia. “You could do a coconutcream, and lime and basil shaved ice on top, possibly with some other sort oflayer? And possibly fruit, or a fruit puree. Like an English trifle.”

11

Chef Violet actually seemed to be considering it. Antonia had expected heridea to be dismissed immediately.

12

“It would be refreshing,” she said, nodding. “Show me what you have.” Andhere, Antonia froze. She had only been providing suggestions, but she had beennowhere near prepared to actually make something.

13

“Um,” she stuttered. “To be honest, chef, I’ve never actually tried to makesomething like this myself. Perhaps you would rather take over?”

14

Chef Violet shook her head. “No, I would like to see what you would do, if youwere in charge,” she said. “Pretend that you are me, and that I am you, Isuppose. What would you direct each of us to do, in the kitchen? A chef rarelyworks entirely alone, after all.” This last comment, for some reason, made Antoniafeel a little braver. After all, if other people were helping, it would not just be herbeing judged, but everyone else who had helped create the dish.

15

“Alright,” she said. “Chef Violet, if you would get started with a coconut cream, aiming for something a little lighter than a pudding? Jordan, if you could createsome sort of nut granola, just to add some extra texture? I’ll make the ice layer.”

16

Each member of the team got to work, and even Chef Violet seemed to enjoythe process. Finally, Antonia poured each layer into a glass and passed it aroundwith spoons for everyone to taste. She held her breath as Chef Violet put a biteinto her mouth, closing her eyes thoughtfully.

17

“Delicious,” she said. “It needs a few adjustments, perhaps — the lime is toosweet with the coconut, but maybe with more pure lime juice, and less sugar inthe shaved ice?” She opened her eyes and looked at Antonia. “Well, Miss Miller, ifyou ever have more suggestions like this one, come to me immediately.” Antonia’sheart leapt. “And in the meanwhile,” Chef Violet said, “how would you feel abouthelping me perfect this dessert?”

18

Antonia stood up a little straighter. “Where do we start, Chef?” she asked.19
