The Lakeview Elementary Schools received two MiniGrants through the Calhoun ISD to purchase elemen-tary-level Spanish books for all the elementaries serv-iced by Lakeview. The grant is funded by the Guido A.and Elizabeth H. Binda Foundation, as well as theBarry, Branch, and Calhoun ISDs. This grant will pro-vide access to reading in another language to all stu-dents in grades 1st through 4th. The stories are kid-friendly, with familiar situations and characters towhom students can relate. The goal is to improve theirliteracy skill in both Spanish and English.

School Closing InformationLakeview parents are notified by the emergency notification phone system when school is closed

unexpectedly. School closing information is also posted on the District website (www.lakeviewspar-tans.org) and on Facebook (www.facebook.com/lakeviewspartans) and reported to television sta-tions (Channel 3, Fox 17, Wood TV 8) and radio stations (WBCK and Win 98.5).

The first snow fall of the year always brings questions as to how, when, and why the decision toclose school is made. Recently, I received a request to make public the rationale that goes intoclosing school. Below I have outlined the process followed when deciding whether or not to closeschool. Depending on circumstances, the decision making process may vary, but all reflect adesire to keep our buildings open for learning when it is safe to do so.

Snow - Our snow watch begins the evening before, as I monitor the weather forecast for ourarea. When there is snowfall overnight, our transportation director and I begin driving the roadsat 4:30AM. We call our neighboring districts, both Harper Creek and Battle Creek. We comparenotes as to the road conditions in their areas. Our snow removal crew comes to work at 1:00AM,so I may call for their input as well. Depending on the amount of snow accumulation, I will con-tact the City of Battle Creek for information on the progress of their road crews in terms of snowremoval. After gathering all of that information and taking into consideration the amount of snow,the wind, and the forecast for the rest of the day, a decision is made.

Delays - I know that some districts delay the start of school in order to deal with weather-relat-ed concerns. It would be a rare occasion for me to make this decision, as I have received exten-sive feedback that late starts are extremely disruptive to our families, even more so than a noschool day.

Ice – We use the same process and timeline as for snow except, depending on conditions, I mayalso contact law enforcement for their input. Ice is an “easier” decision, as it doesn’t matter howmuch ice there is, if it covers the roadways and road crews can’t salt in time, we close.

Wind Chill – We rely more on the weather forecast when considering closing because of windchill. If the wind chill forecast is significantly below the -20 threshold, we may make the decisionto close school the night before, but most of the time, we will make the decision in the morning.

Fog - Our district is only 14 square miles. So, it will be very rare for our district to close due to fogor limited sight reasons.

Power Outage – In most cases, if a building is without power, we will close. If a power outageoccurs during the school day, we will most likely send students home. The final decision is madewith consideration to how quickly the power company believes power will be restored and howthe outage will impact our ability to serve lunch and maintain a comfortable building tempera-ture. If it is necessary to send students home, we will notify parents using the District’s emergencynotification system. Elementary students will remain at school or on the bus until we can verify thatsomeone is home to care for them.

Water Main Break - If a water main break will shut water off to the school for an extended peri-od of time, we will close school and send students home using the same protocol as for poweroutages. We do stay in communication with the City to help make this decision. No water meansno restrooms, diminished ability to keep our buildings clean and safe, and it may also compromiseour ability to serve lunch.

I’d also like to mention that the events or activities scheduled for a given day do not factor intowhether or not we close school. Whether there is a play, exams, ball games, etc.; it doesn’t makea difference. It also doesn’t make a difference if closing for another day means that we’ll make-up days in June. In fact, if this winter is anything like last winter, it is very likely that we will need tomake-up days in June. I’ve already suggested to staff that they not make vacation plans for theweek of June 8th.

I hope this helps to answer many of your questions and illustrates how seriously we take the deci-sion of whether or not to close school. I know it is stressful regardless of the decision. If we haveschool, there is additional concern about safety. If we don’t have school, there is the added bur-den of back-up plans for child care. Smart SnacksGuidelines and

Fundraising As of this summer (July, 2014) by Federal

mandate, schools who participate in theNational School Lunch Program (NSLP)are required to meet the Smart Snacks inSchool guidelines. The guidelines cover allfoods sold (not given away) on the schoolcampus during the school day (midnightuntil 30 minutes after the end of the schoolday). The guidelines affect all foods soldoutside of School Nutrition Programs or theChild Care Food Program.

What this means for Lakeview Schools:a) Foods sold in schools during the schoolday outside of the cafeteria and childcare must meet the Smart Snacks guide-lines.

You can still fundraise: - Food fundraisers that meet the guide-

lines (sold during the school day) needto meet the standards.

- Non-food fundraisers (there's lots ofcool ideas out there)

- Food sold more than 30 minutes afterthe school day is over, such as conces-sions, do not need to meet the guide-lines

- Food sold outside of school campus(all day) do not apply

- Foods not meant for immediate con-sumption (e.g., frozen pizza kits, cookiedough), do not apply

October 2014 and has been reprinted with permission. During the 2013-2014 school year, the main focus for the

school was improving the culture. Through a Vision surveytaken by students and staff last year, specific problem areaswere identified and initiatives sprang from these needs.

Some of these initiatives culminated into Link Crew, theStudent/Staff get together, Impact 2014 and the revival ofPep Club. Though each attack the issue of school culture indifferent ways, their common goal is to improve relation-ships in the school in order to create an atmosphere whereeveryone feels a sense of belonging.

“The thread that connects all of this is that they are allabout developing better relationships to each other andthe school,” Principal Jeff Bohl said. “Pep Club has donegreat work in terms of invigorating school spirit and LinkCrew fills a gap with the way we bring freshmen into our cul-ture and provides a great growth opportunity for leaders.”

I spent a good deal of time last year and throughout thesummer working with staff members, administrators, com-munity members and other students on a majority of theseprojects- and it was DIFFICULT.

It was difficult to put myself out there and share mythoughts. It was difficult to think outside of myself and makesure that I represented the rest of the student body. Andthough I felt passionately about what I was doing, I realizedthat even though I was being affected, and I knew whatwas happening, that didn’t mean that EVERYONE else did.There are so many students in the school and the messageswe were intent on conveying weren’t reaching the peoplethey were supposed to affect.

And getting that message out is the most important partof any movement.

It is up to us how we use this information, if we choose toignore it or choose to use it. The hope is that we will not con-tinue to perpetuate the same culture of apathy and thatwe will empower others to reach their full potential.

To make an actual change, it’s up to us, the students. Afew students can’t want it; it has to come from ALL of us.

Impact 2014By the end of the 2013-2014 school year, Superintendent

Dave Peterson-among other community members- identi-fied issues of equity being a barrier to forming relationshipsin the school. To combat these issues, a group called Pacefor Change was selected to help shift the climate ofLakeview.

What accumulated from this was a retreat that tookplace July 10 and 11. At this retreat, students, staff, adminis-trators, parents and community members discussed person-al anecdotes pertaining to present day issues and devotedtime to planning out ways to solve these issues within theLakeview School District.

“It was really cool to be in a group where everyone want-ed the same things. We all wanted to make our school abetter place,” senior Laina Upston said.

Though discussion was an important aspect of the Impactretreat, action was the next step. Attendees at the Impactretreat were put into groups and brainstormed ways tomake Lakeview a more welcoming place for all kinds ofpeople. One of the activities planned was to show theentire staff of Lakeview School District, every teacher andadministrator from every elementary and up, what exactlyhappened at the retreat. To get the message out, they tookover the planning of the Back to School breakfast and deliv-ered powerful speeches to the employees of Lakeview.

“It was really intimidating. I don’t think any of the teach-ers really expected us to do that, but I think afterwardseveryone was on the same page,” senior Erinn Smith said.

this, there will be another retreat that will begin accepting reg-istration forms by the end of October.

Student/Staff Get-togetherDuring opening week, Aug. 25 through Aug. 29, an event

specifically targeting student and teacher relationshipsoccurred.

The Student/Staff Get Together was comprised of about 65students and the entire high school teaching staff. During theGet Together, students and staff did team building exercises,and split off into “families” to dissect scenarios about real issuesin the school, such as bullying behaviors.

“I really liked how we heard a lot of different voices on eachscenario,” junior Rachel Dugan said.

The Student/Staff Get Together was created as a way tomake stronger connections between staff and students, andultimately make Lakeview a better place. Though a profoundand impactful experience, the message was one that couldnot reach every student in the school.

“I felt like the Student/Staff Get Together was cool, but theproblem is that everyone wasn’t there, so those that did go getdrowned out by everyone else and we end up doing the sameold thing,” senior Erinn Smith said.

Though not all of the 1,300+ students in Lakeview High Schoolwere able to take part in it, the students and teachers who didexperience it were able to apply this experience to their livesand were able to maintain the relationships they made at theGet Together during this school year.

“I see Ms. Ouellette differently now. On the first day of schoolshe was talking about ways she could help her students andbe available, so it was cool to see her use some of the trainingpoints we learned,” Smith said.

Pep ClubDuring the 2013-2014 school year, Pep Club was revived after

a year-long hiatus with the installment of a spirit rock and excit-ing pep assemblies. This year, students have taken the initiativeto commit themselves to continue the increase of school spiritat Lakeview.

“We are working to build positive school spirit for all groups,”Pep Club advisor Darcy Hassing said. “We aren’t just focusingon sports, but we are trying to support all groups, clubs, teamsand the arts.”

Pep Club has spent time over the summer and every Fridaymorning planning and orchestrating football theme days, pepassemblies, a massive ALS challenge, among other activities topromote a better relationship between the students and theschool.

“I feel like we’re making a real difference. A lot more stu-dents are coming to games and there’s a lot more grade inter-action in the student section,” junior Molli Gault said.

Link CrewModeled after the Web Leader program at the middle school and

like programs all over the nation, Link Crew’s purpose is to connect thefreshman students with each other and the rest of the high school, andto promote a general feeling of belonging in Lakeview.

“Link Crew is a part of an initiative to improve relationships and havebetter connections within the school,” counselor Lukas Pederson said.

Though Link Crew was specifically planned to revolve around fresh-man students, the counselors and other organizers are looking toexpand Link Crew to all new students- not just restricting it to onegrade.

“This year we were only able to serve incoming ninth graders, butwe’re looking to expanding it to all incoming students. So, all new stu-dents or school of choice students coming in their tenth, eleventh andtwelfth year will be a part of this,” counselor Heather Albee said. “We’realso looking to expand the number of leaders and expand their com-munication with the incoming freshmen.”

To expand communication, the counselors have many activities instore for Link Leaders and freshman to keep up a continuous effort tomake freshmen feel at home in the high school.

“Later in the year we’ll be having Link Leaders invite freshmen toevents, do check-in’s and have more events geared towards LinkLeaders and freshmen,” Pederson said.

Each fall and spring, the LakeviewSchools Education Foundationawards grants to Lakeview educa-tors who present plans for innovativestudy and learning for both them-selves and their students. 2013 fallgrants were awarded to the follow-ing Lakeview educators:

The Rose Ferguson Grant was givento Amy Wichterman, a K-4 counselor,to attend a Theraplay Group Therapytraining program to gain informationfor parents and students who haveexperienced trauma and other lifeexperiences that will affect their edu-cation.

The Karl Randels grant for the Arts was awarded to Lakeview Middle School music teach-ers Jeff Cachero, Sheri Schmidt and Tim Haupt to partially fund expenses to attend theMichigan Music Conference where Jeff was a presenter.

The Mary Ellen Vanderveer Grant was received by Sara Johnson of the LHS WorldLanguage department to purchase electronic training materials that would allow worldlanguage teachers to better assess students’ speaking proficiency levels of foreignlanguages.

Three Riverside teachers, Kathryn Sellers, Patricia Warren, Lindsey Rencoos, and KaseyWard were awarded the remainder of the Vanderveer grant to facilitate a parent make-it-take-it night to help parents be better prepared to help their children with math prob-lems.

The Minges Brook early elementary teachers and ELL support staff were awarded theThomas Jefferson Fund Grant to purchase independent reading books for emergent read-ers to supplement other books in the resource library.

Spring grants were awarded to the following Lakeview educators:John Burdette was awarded the Mary Ellen Vanderveer grant to help defray expenses

for the LHS Robotics team to design and compete in a robotics competition encompass-ing area, state and national contests.

The Dr. Robert E. Spencer Education Grant was given to Shannon Shepard and MonicaCrider, teachers at Minges Brook Elementary School, to help with registration fees andmaterials for a seminar based on Glasser’s Choice Theory in the classroom. Informationgained will be shared with staff to help with behavior choices in the classrooms.

Neighborhood Planning Councils (NPCs) are resident-based groups that serve an important and specific purpose in our community. The purpose of Neighborhood Planning Councils is to provide a forum to inform and discuss with neighborhood residents and representatives of the City staff and City Commissioners, issues and concerns of that neighborhood. Generally, the City informs the NPC of facts and potential results of pending decisions, opportunities or other changes. The NPC discusses and decides what, if any, recommendations it would like to make or strategies they would like to develop.

These meetings are all open to the public who may attend and offer suggestions about resolving certain matters of interest in the neighborhood. Any person who lives or owns property in a Council area or has demonstrable or substantial interest (i.e. works in) within the defined boundaries of the Council area may request to be considered for membership on their NPC Board.

Anyone wanting to join an NPC should give his or her name to the chairperson of the Council. Attendance as a potential member is encouraged prior to recommendation by the NPC for membership. His or her name is submitted to the City Commission for official appointment.

Each NPC has a regularly scheduled meeting date each month. Meetings are held in the evenings and run one to two hours in length. Questions about Neighborhood Planning Councils, meeting locations or membership may be directed to the City of Battle Creek 966-3348.

and his volunteer staff at God'sKitchen Battle Creek served upa huge Thanksgiving feast forhundreds at FirstCongregational Church onWednesday, Nov. 6.

“I was stunned by the num-bers,” said Rev. Stein. “Weserved 847 meals with 455 ofthose being take out and deliv-ered meals for people that arehome bound. I'm overwhelmedby the generosity and warmth ofpeople in this city. The meal wastraditional Thanksgiving fare,and I heard nothing but praisefor the food and those whoserved it.”

The line to get into the diningarea was huge and stretchedthroughout the church.

Quiet conversation wasmixed with the sounds of friendsgreeting one another andChristmas music played in thebackground.

John Wood brought hiskaraoke machine and sang alongto several Christmas CD's.

James Williamson greetedeveryone at the door and said215 people (43 of whom werechildren) had entered the churchwithin the first 25 minutes.

“It's pretty amazing,” hesaid. “Lots of hungry folks.”

Along with Williamson,Chris Brenner regularly volun-teers her time at God's Kitchen

Battle Creek.In fact, she and her husband

Scott were named recently asthe God's Kitchen Battle CreekVolunteers of the Year.

“This is our third year volun-teering for God's Kitchen,” saidBrenner. “Every Thursday nightwe come here and it's throughour 4-H group, the Wattles ParkTrailblazers. That's what got usstarted and we've just continuedsince then.”

Chris' family of volunteersincludes her husband Scott andkids Allison, Colin and Emily.

“You know, it's just the peo-ple that we encounter and seeand visit with,” she said. “Yousee people that are regulars thatyou get to know, and you form a

camaraderie with them. You askhow they're doing, and knowingthat you're helping them byfeeding them a meal is verypowerful.

“They're so gracious andhappy to have been served a hotmeal,” she added. “Pastor Steinis a fabulous cook and he servesfabulous food every night. It'snot like it's peanut butter andjelly, it's a fulfilling meal. It'simportant work that he's doingand we really enjoy being a partof it.”

Creek held its 84th annualChristmas party at Full Blast indowntown Battle CreekMonday, Dec. 1, at 11:30 am.

The party is a joint commu-nity service project of theRotary Club of Battle Creek andthe Cereal City Sunrise RotaryClub.

The Sunrise Club has co-hosted this event since it wasfounded in 1992.

The party included a visitfrom Santa, singing holidaysongs, lunch and entertainment

from Ronald McDonald. Each attending student has

an opportunity to visit withSanta and receive a gift bag.

The bags are purchaseditems using Rotary funds, sup-plemented with donations fromarea businesses and organiza-tions including St. JoeElementary, Meyer's Toy World,McDonald's, and Pizza Hut.

2014 Pennfield Township Winter NewsletterTOWNSHIP LOCAL ROADS:With the passage of the road repair millage proposal, an estimated $5.0 million will be spent on needed road

repairs beginning in the summer of 2015. Between now and then, Pennfield Township will be securing nec-

essary legal agreements with the Calhoun County Road Department that will establish a basic level of per-

formance as well as remedies if the work is not up to standards. We are also planning another public meet-

ing in either late April or early May to discuss what work will be done in 2015 and beyond. A copy of the

proposed five (5) year plan is available at the Township Office and on our website at

www.pennfieldtwp.com.

RENTAL AND VACANT STRUCTURE ORDINANCES:The Township Board has completed a review of ordinance language for both rental properties and vacant

structures (residential and commercial) within Pennfield Township. It is the intent of the Township Board

to introduce both ordinances at our February 2015 board meeting with final consideration coming at the

March 2015 board meeting. If adopted, both ordinances would become effective April 1, 2015. A copy of

both ordinances is available at the Township Office and on our website at www.pennfieldtwp.com. We wel-

come public input on both proposed ordinances.

TRUCK ROUTE ORDINANCE: With the passage of the road repair millage, the Township Board is working on a proposed truck route ordi-

nance which would prohibit heavy truck traffic on all local roads and certain primary roads. The purpose of

the ordinance is to identify a “safe truck route” that will minimize any potential damage to our repaired local

roads and certain primary roads. Certain trucks, as defined by the State of Michigan, would be exempt.

Those include milk trucks, propane delivery trucks and farm equipment (tractors, trucks and trailers). They

do not include garbage trucks traveling to and from the Convis Township Landfill or gravel trucks beyond

a certain area. More information on the proposed truck route ordinance will be available sometime after the

first of the year.

PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP HICKS CEMETERY:Beginning in the spring of 2015, Pennfield Township Hicks Cemetery will be accepting donations for the

additional planting of trees on the east side of the cemetery. In return, a contribution marker will be placed

at the base of the tree (there would be a variety of trees to choose from) in memory of a loved one or ones

who may be buried at the cemetery. For more information, please contact Pennfield Township Clerk Kathy

Case at 968-8549. Pennfield Township would also like to thank ITC for its generous donation to the ceme-

tery which allowed us to landscape around the cemetery sign and to replace our current waste containers

with brand new containers (new containers will be placed within the cemetery in the spring of 2015). Hicks

Cemetery has been part of our community since 1860.

CALHOUN COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT:In October of this year, the Township Board renewed its agreement with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s

Department for dedicated police services in Pennfield Township for another five (5) year period.

PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT:On October 7th, Pennfield Township rededicated Fire Station #2 in honor of Paid on Call (POC) Firefighters

Robert Mehaffey and Richard Smith. Prior to his passing this year, POC Assistant Fire Chief Mehaffey had

over 36 years of dedicated service to the residents of Pennfield Township. POC Captain Richard Smith, still

active within the Fire Department, currently has over 34 years of dedicated service to the residents of

Pennfield Township.

STREETLIGHTS:If your streetlight is not working, please report it to the Township Office at 968-8549 as soon as possible.

We will file a report with Consumers Energy. Right now, it is taking Consumers Energy approximately (28)

days to repair non-working streetlights. The Township is actively seeking a quicker repair time from

Consumers.

TOWNSHIP PLANNING COMMISSION:Beginning in 2015, the Township Planning Commission will begin work on our first ever five (5) year

Recreational Plan. Public input will be critical to this process. Stay tuned for meeting dates and times.

TOWNSHIP BOARD MEETINGS:Beginning with the January 13, 2015 board meeting, the Township Board meetings will begin at 6:00pm at

the Pennfield Middle School cafeteria.
