The Energy Storage Technology Center® (ESTC) program at Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) is a collaborative effort of a broad range of technology experts within SwRI from diverse scientific fields to support industry and government clients in the research, development, and evaluation of energy storage systems. ESTC services include battery safety testing and evaluation, battery management system development and testing, chemistry-related services, large system development for grid-scale storage, manufacturing system development, materials development, qualification testing, test protocol development, and system integration.
SwRI has the in-depth expertise, broad experience, and extensive facilities and equipment required to address safety challenges in the development of energy storage systems (ESS). With a highly experienced engineering team specializing in various aspects of ESS, SwRI plays a key role in the research, development and evaluation of energy storage systems.
Test and EvaluationSwRI has the equipment and expertise needed to conduct high-quality, independent testing across a full range of test standards to determine the ESS safe operating envelope.
Services offered include:• Mechanical testing
◦ Crush ◦ Nail penetration ◦ Vibration ◦ Shock ◦ Drop ◦ Rotation
• Environmental testing ◦ Environmental chambers -30°C to 85°C ◦ Altitude simulation to 19,800 m ◦ Fire resistance and flammability ◦ Corrosive atmosphere
