    OBJECTIVE

Cricket is the second most popular sport in the world. It has huge amounts of fans around

the world and over 100 countries are member of the ICC (International Cricket Council) in

Dubai. Cricket, now termed as the unofficial national sport of India, has got an old history

associated with its existence in the country. The oldest references to the sport in India can be

dated as early as the year 1725 when some sailors played a friendly match at a seaport in Kutch.

This report gives deep insights about the consistency of batsmens, how the data is collected,

recorded and various statistical tools are used to analyze the data collected and thereby

interpreted in order to measure the consistency of a Batsman.

The main objective of this study is two-fold. First is to study the performance of a

batsman until now and second is to measure the consistency of each batsman, comparing among

themselves. The data so collected is analyzed using statistical tools like averages, mean,

standard deviation and coefficient of variance.

    INTRODUCTION

The study is done in order to observe and compare consistency of in the batting of Indian

    cricketers.

It is mainly done in order to know the fluctuations in their batting performance and

    comparing the consistency among themselves.

Data of latest batting performance has been taken and thereby has been tabulated for

    analyzing individual performances.

Statistical tools like averages, means, standard deviation and coefficient of variance are

    used to serve this purpose.

The result thus obtained has been interpreted though graphs to have better understanding.

    COLLECTION AND RECORDING OF DATA

For each batsman the last 25 matches in test and ODI have been considered.

The data thus obtained has been tabulated and calculation has been done.

The performances of 5 batsman namely Sachin Tendlkar, Rahul Dravid, Virender

Sehwag, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh have been considered.

    Formulae used are

Mean = Total no of runs/no of matches.

Batting average=( Total runs scored )/(No of matches played - No of run outs)

Standard deviation = Sqrt of the average of the squared distances of the

    observations (runs) from the mean.

    Coefficient of Variance = (Standard deviation/Batting average)*100

    ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

The last 25 matches of each batsman, in ODI and Test, shows that there are fluctuations in the

runs scored by the batsman. The observation on their batting averages and coefficient of

    variations are:

    Batting Average:

In ODI matches, for the last 25 matches batting averages in the descending order is:

    Sachin > Dhoni > Sehwag > Dravid > Yuvraj

In Test matches, for the last 25 matches batting averages in the descending order is:

    Sachin > Sehwag > Dravid > Dhoni > Yuvraj

    Standard deviation:

In ODI matches, for the last 25 matches batting averages in the descending order is:

    Dravid < Dhoni < Yuvraj < Sehwag < Sachin

In Test matches, for the last 25 matches batting averages in the descending order is:

    Dhoni < Yuvraj < Sachin < Dravid < Sehwag

    Coefficient of variation:

    29

  • 8/8/2019 Batsmans Consistency Recovered)

    30/31

In ODI matches, for the last 25 matches coefficient of variation in the ascending order is:

    Dhoni < Dravid < Sehwag < Sachin < Yuvraj

In Test matches, for the last 25 matches coefficient of variation in the ascending order is:

    Sachin < Dhoni < Dravid < Yuvraj < Sehwag

    CONCLUSION

By analyzing the runs scored in the last 25 cricket matches by Sachin,

Dravid, Segwag, Dhoni and Yuvraj, it is observed that batting average of

Sachin in both ODI and Test match is more than other players. So each

time Sachin contributes more runs than the other players.

The standard deviation is useful in describing how far individual items

in a distribution depart from the mean of the distribution. Here Dravid hasthe least Standard Deviation value and Sachin has the highest Standard

Deviation value in the ODI matches. Dhoni has the least Standard

Deviation value and Sehwag has the highest Standard Deviation value in

the Test matches. So the scores of Dravid in ODI matches and the scores

of Dhoni in Test matches have the less deviation from the central score

value to the individual scores whereas Sachin and Sehwag have the more

deviation from the central score value to the individual scores in ODI and

    Test matches respectively.

The standard deviation is an absolute measure of dispersion that

expresses variation in the same units. The standard deviation cannot be

    30

    31/31

the sole basis for comparing two batsman scores. We need a relative

distribution that will give us the magnitude of the deviation relative to the

batting average. The coefficient of variation is one such relative measure

of dispersion which gives standard deviation as a percentage of the

batting average. So coefficient of variation is the one of the measure of

consistency of the batsman. In the ODI cricket matches Dhoni has the

lowest Coefficient of variation than the other players, so he is the most

consistent player. In the Test cricket matches Sachin has the lowest

Coefficient of variation than the other players, so he is the most

consistent player. In the consistency levels Dhoni is followed by Dravid,

Sehwag, Sachin and Yuvraj in the One Day International cricket and

Sachin is followed by Dhoni, Dravid, Yuvraj and Sehwag in the Test

    cricket.

It is also one of the interesting observations that Sachin is having

highest batting average but he is not consistent as the others players of

having less batting average than Sachin in One Day International cricket

    matches.
