A jury in Jefferson County Thursday sided with prosecutors, returning a guilty verdict in the trial of a man accused of murder in the deaths of two people in 2008.Batiste Joseph Breaux Jr, 32, of Beaumont was found guilty of capital murder in the shooting deaths of Kelly Evans, 25, and Gerald Evans, 27. The shootings happened Aug. 5, 2008 at a house located at 4625 Ironton Ave. in North Beaumont as the men were celebrating a birthday. He has been sentenced to life in prison.The jury in the trial of Batiste Breaux Jr. deliberated for more than three hours at the Jefferson County courthouse.A piece of court evidence shows the bullet that blew right through Gerald's head. A convenience store video shows Breaux's cadillac pull up to the location. He doesn't get out of the car.Only a family friend of Breaux's interacts with Kelly Evans, the Evans' father and a friend in the convenience store.About an hour later, Breaux shot the Evans brothers at their front porch.According to witness testimony, Breaux and the Evans brothers didn't even know each other. Even though the incident happened in 2008, the prosecution says the case was tried accurately. In regards to the verdict, the defense says they expected the outcome.The death penalty was waived in this case because defense attorneys convinced the state Breaux's IQ was less than 70.According to a probable cause affidavit, Breaux was driving an 80's model Cadillac, pulled up to the front of the house and began to fire multiple rounds. Three people were hit. A cousin of the Evans' was seriously injured, but survived. The Evans brothers were taken to Chrisuts Hospital St. Elizabeth, but doctors were unable to save their lives. According to 12News file stories, the Evans brothers went to a nearby convenience store to get items for the birthday celebration. While at the store, one of the men asked a woman for her phone number. A store clerk said the two were not ugly' or rowdy.' The two left without incident after shopping. Police later learned that the woman to whom the men spoke at the store, was with Breaux. She was also in the car with Breaux as he drove from the store to the house on Ironton. She signed a witness statement identifying him as the shooter.Officers obtained a murder warrant the day of the shooting and a manhunt began. The search lasted until Aug. 14 when officers arrested him in Houston.
