Expanding Our Horizons By hiring more people and expanding into new industries, BASS is preparing for further growth in 2011. Increasing demand for the full suite of BASSnet™ fleet management software, along with signs of recovery in the shipping market, has enabled BASS to make improvements in both its operations and product offerings.

We hired 13 new people last year, pri-marily in Europe, and will continue to add staff this year with a focus on Europe and the Middle East. Not only are we growing as a company, but we are also seeing more and more vessels using our applications as we add new customers.

While we continue to serve leading companies in the maritime industry, we are also moving into new markets. We recently signed contracts with companies in the European offshore wind industry and the Swedish tanker management market and see more opportunities in both these areas.

Late last year, BASS supplied software to Norwegian Inwind AS, its first cus-tomer in the wind-energy market. This month we’ll deliver modules to Rederi AB Veritas Tankers, the first contract we’ve signed with a company that’s part of the cluster of tanker managers off the Swedish island of Donsö outside of Gothenburg.

We look forward to an exciting 2011 and will come out in a much stronger position as we move into new areas armed with new staff.

Since it was founded with a staff of three in 1997, BASS has grown in leaps and bounds. It now employs almost 100 people and sells a full suite of maritime software solutions worldwide. It’s all about building good teams and good products. That means hiring and train-ing the right people to better serve customers in the shipping and energy industries.

We hired new people last year and expanded into new markets. In line with expected shipping trends in 2011, we will continue to increase our staff to help us win key contracts, better manage our existing customers and improve our technology.

“We are building our overall compe-tence internally by investing in our own people so that we can better serve our

customers,” said BASS CEO Per Steinar Upsaker. “The increase in employees and customers will strengthen our organisa-tion and ensure strong growth also in the years to come.”

In response to sales growth in 2009 and 2010 and unprecedented demand for its products as the shipping industry be-comes more tightly regulated, BASS is adding expertise in product management, product development and human capital management.

Some of the key roles include Capt. Anil Kumar and Alan Liew as Product Managers, Doris Henrietta as Manager – Human Capital Management, Capt. Tom Sandberg and Hilde Krogenes as Regional Managers – Sales Channel Management and Dag Eirik Gjerken as Consulting Manager.

Tom and Hilde, based in Oslo, have many years of experience from the maritime industry and will be responsible for increasing BASS’ market presence in the shipping and offshore markets in Europe and the Americas.

The company’s proven track record serv-ing the maritime industry is allowing it to expand its presence – and offer its cus-tomers the best software tools to improve their business.

2.7

NEW RELEaSE:

Add-on functionality is not enough for the ship manager who already uses stand-alone tools to handle dry-docking projects and vetting management. Demanding customers are pushing for new features that are seamlessly plugged into their existing software suite.

A complete set of tools for ship manage-ment can’t be provided by ticking off the most checkboxes in a tender process. Instead, how people in various roles in an organisation tackle challenges together determines the completeness of a software suite.

Two major criteria must be met for ex-perienced users to be satisfied with new add-ons. First, a new module needs to be as good as, or better than, popular stand-alone tools already in use. Secondly, it must blend in well with the main toolset without du-plicating the functionality already covered in part by other modules. The module for managing the complexity of a dry-docking project is a typical illustration of this:

“Since the BASSnet Projects module is fully integrated with other modules such as Maintenance, Procurement, Defects, Guar-antee Claims, Document Manager and Hull Inspections, it helps users create complicat-ed project specifications very effectively,” explained Rajesh Purkar, head of Product Management at BASS. “Information from various modules is compiled and edited in a built-in text using drawing editor, which has the same editing and formatting features as MS Word.”

A familiar user interface and effective workflow between various roles provides added functionality without added complex-ity. This is how leading ship managers can bring their operations to a new level without adding costs.

“We’re seeing more and more regulations and stricter requirements for documentation to show that things are being done properly. Our new modules and features will help our customers meet these requirements,” said BASS CEO Per Steinar Upsaker. The key is to meet new requirements without adding extra costs.

Better integration between functions keeps leading ship managers ahead of the game. Data is kept up-to-date in one central database and made available through tools relevant to each user.

Manual procedures for collecting data and creating reports are eliminated, and this is obviously a cost saver. However, an improved decision-making process is even more important to many ship managers. In-stead of waiting for a report to be delivered at the end of a demanding project, managers can act proactively while a project is still underway.

“Several customers that already installed a complete suite will evaluate the new mod-ules,” said Haakon Dalan, General Man-ager, Product Management & Marketing at BASS. “They are eager to eliminate the tools that still generate manual procedures and reporting.”

Ship Management Pushed to a New Level

January 2011 3

New Timely Features to Improve Business Performance

The new Projects Module lets you track and monitor all aspects of a project for a vessel. (See separate article on the next page). The Vetting Module helps organisations manage their vetting inspections. A vetting inspection is an in-depth ship assessment that critically analyzes a vessel’s past and current safety and quality systems with the aim to improve safety at sea and decrease pollution-related incidents.

A Hull Inspections sub-module has been added to the Maintenance module. With this new feature, you can track and monitor all aspects of a hull inspection carried out on a vessel. The inspector can easily enter all observations noted during an inspection, including the area inspected, the type of inspection and the percentage of deterioration. The entire inspection history of a tank inspection will also be tracked in the system. You can set up profiles of your hull tanks, upload an image of the hull structure and create colour codes for hull conditions.

Another new sub-module, the Guarantee Claims, helps you track and monitor all components and parts under warranty. The Defects sub-module, which is also new, allows you to see all the defects that have been reported for your components across all your vessels.

Other new modules and features include:– Location Management– Routine Tasks– Defect Lists– Condition of Class– Fleet view of components– Electronic logs for ballast water, solid

residues and oil record books

Track Dry Docking Projects from Planning to Payment

January 2011 4

Because the bulk of a vessel’s operating costs are incurred during dry-docking, it is vital for companies to systematically plan and manage this work. Much of this is currently done via Excel or by using stand-alone tools, making it difficult for managers to gain an overview over the process and leading to possible errors, cost overruns and nasty surprises.

Our recent addition, the Projects Module, is easy to use for both superintendents and a ship’s staff when planning a project and managing costs, thereby avoiding any nasty surprises. It allows you to track and monitor all aspects of a project carried out for a vessel and is fully integrated with other BASSnet modules. While the main application is for dry-docking projects, it can also be used for refit, repair and conversion work. Released in December, the module is already being used by Stolt Tankers. Other shipowners are expected to start using the module for dry docking projects this month, according to Chief Executive Officer Per Steinar Upsaker.

“This is a very important module for ship-owners. It will minimise the preparation needed for dry docking and give a better overview over costs, resulting in improved quality and more reasonable prices,” he said.

The module allows shipowners to create standard specifications for a project’s task list and distribute them to vessels for use.

These specifications can also be sent to yards for price quotations. When a quote is received, the Compare Quotes feature will give you a shortlist and award the tender to the selected yard.

“Sending bids electronically through an MS Excel template allows for quotes to be easily and automatically imported into the Projects module,” said Rajesh Purkar, head of Product Management at BASS. “It also keeps track of all the purchases done for dry-docking by following their deliveries and costs during dry-dock.”

The Yard Evaluation function is handy when deciding what yard to select for a project. It allows you to look at the various “grades” given to yards used previously. Once a project is completed, a user can enter details on the yard’s performance for all the different jobs. The system will then calculate an average grade based on the individual grades given.

Costs can be monitored either for the entire project or for individual tasks. The Project Overview feature gives you an overview of all projects for each vessel.

OFFSHORE WIND

BASS sailed into new territory last year when it implemented its first project for a customer in the wind-energy industry. That customer is Inwind AS, which owns and operates purpose-built vessels for installing foundations and wind turbines.

The project, which kicked off in September, entailed the delivery of a document manage-ment system, a safety management solution (SAFIR) and a risk management system. The software will enable Stavanger, Norway-based Inwind to streamline its wind farms, enhance safety systems and improve business processes.

Using BASS software will help Inwind achieve its goal of becoming a key global player in the offshore installation and opera-tion of wind farms. By streamlining and automating processes across a fleet and an organisation, companies like Inwind can lower operating costs and improve efficien-cy, giving them a competitive advantage.

“As a new start-up in the $26 billion offshore wind-turbine market, we aim to implement more modules on our new deliveries,” said Simon Grapes, Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) Manager at Inwind AS.

According to Inwind, which was founded in 2008, more robust vessels and solutions, more robust vessels and solutions will be needed as many projects move further away from shore and into deeper waters, requiring year-round installation.

The huge potential for offshore wind farms in Europe will bring about opportunities for turbine installation companies such as Inwind and is also expected to increase de-mand for support vessels in this market.

The contract with Inwind could result in BASS developing solutions for other offshore wind-farm providers, according to Jaume Mortensen, BASS General Manager for Sales and Channel Management.

“We see opportunities in this market in the future,” said BASS CEO Per Steinar Upsaker.

Europe is the world leader in offshore wind with 39 offshore wind farms in nine Euro-pean countries. In 2009, 582 megawatts were connected to the grid in Europe, represent-ing a growth rate of 56 percent, according to the European Wind Energy Association. The association is targeting 40 gigawatts of offshore wind in the European Union by 2020, implying an average annual growth rate of 28 percent.

Sailing into New TerritoryBASS Signs First Contract with Tanker Cluster Outside of Gothenburg, Sweden

Another milestone was reached when BASS won its first contract with a company that’s part of a large cluster of tanker managers on the island of Donsö in Sweden. It agreed to deliver its BASSnet™ software to Rederi AB Veritas Tankers, a Swedish family-based business, and implementation across Veritas Tankers’ fleet and at its shore-based organisation is expected this month.

Some of the modules in the BASSnet software suite are dedicated to the tanker segment, namely the Vetting and TMSA modules, which help organisations manage their vetting inspections, saving them time and money.

The software will help Veritas Tankers further improve the safety on its vessels and also improve verification control ahead of inspections. The company may order more modules from BASS if it needs additional software for its office and vessels, according to Joakim Franzén, Safety and Vetting Manager at Veritas Tankers.

This shows that BASS’ modules are a perfect fit for the tanker segment, creating added value for shipowners, which could lead to further contracts, according to Jaume Mortensen, General Manager for Sales and Channel Management at BASS.

“We aim to create more business from Donsö and the surrounding regions in the future,” Mortensen said.
