Well, I was going to tell you all about my visit with the Easter Bunny and my pretty spring hat, but I have something way better to share with you this month... I have learned something new about myself. I. AM. A. HUNTER. Did you read that?! I’m a HUNTER!! Check out my picture… that’s me hunting squirrels at the park by my house. I had never hunted squirrels be- fore, but it turns out I’m kinda good at it. I mean, I haven’t caught one yet, but I’m lightning fast when I see one. I’m so fast; I went half-way up that crooked tree! Mom likes to laugh cuz I kinda got stuck right there… half-way up that tree trunk, but what she doesn’t know is that I was waiting for those critters… yeah, I was stalking them. Cuz I’m a HUNTER! And then, when we went to visit the Easter Bunny at Breakfast with Bassets, I saw more squirrels, and they were running all over the place… so I waited for Mom to get busy talking, and as soon as she dropped my leash, I was OFF LIKE A BOLT OF LIGHTNING! And it turns out I’m not the only squirrel hunter, Rocket was right there with me, and we ran so fast, we almost got one of those little buggers. That’s me and Rocket fixing to catch us a squirrel! My sister Hannah might be the good one with her Canine Good Citizen stuff, but I’m a HUNTER! Got something you need caught? Just call me up… BELLA the HUNTER! Yeah, I like the sound of that. Me and Rocket gotta hang out more of- ten… we’re a great team! Look out squirrels! WHOA! Oh, and I also hunt Easter Eggs! My friend Paul hid colorful Easter Eggs all over the park at Breakfast with Bassets, and he even put treats in them so I could find ‘em easier. I was pretty good at that, too, but I have to admit that my friend Maggie is a rock star when it comes to hunting Easter Eggs. And she not only finds lots of eggs, she knows how to open them and get the treats out, too! That Maggie is a smart hound... WHOA! Mom and I hope everyone has a nice Easter… I’m going to wear my pretty spring hat with the flowers on it for the Easter Bunny’s visit. I hope he brings me lots of carrots, I really like those. And some of those colorful eggs with the treats inside would be nice, too. See you at the Doo Dah Parade! WHOA!

Hound Counter - 201325 Homeless hounds came into BHRSC between

January 1, 2013 and February 28, 2013.15 Homeless Hounds found their forever homes between January 1, 2013 and February 28, 2013.

2013 is already shaping up to be a BIG year!KUDOS to our AWESOME BHRSC Volunteers!

Is your hound a leaner? It’s a common enough issue. Most serial dog owners are likely to have lived with a leaner at some point.

But it’s not just leaning. It’s also standing on your feet, getting underfoot when you walk down the hall, hugging your legs during a walk, and sleep-

ing with the maximum amount of shared surface area in contact.

Some authorities would have you believe your dog is trying to dominate you with his or her weight. Oth-ers might say you’re being manipulated by a poorly socialized, misbehaving suck-up who knows how to push your buttons. But the truth is something else.

In most cases this is affection-seeking behavior, plain and simple. Dogs love to cuddle. And if the person you want to cuddle with is always sitting and stand-ing, then cuddling takes the form of leaning on legs or sitting on shoes as the object of affection taps away at the keyboard.

Add that to the fact that dogs –– pack animals that they are –– are fond of close contact as a safety measure, and you’ve got a great rationale for your dog’s lean-on-a-leg approach to life.

Is Your Hound a “Leaner?”

Homemade Doggie Ice Cream! This makes a wonderful treat for your hounds on a hot day, and it’s much cheaper than buying the specialty treats available in stores. It’s also very easy to do.

Ingredients:3 6 ounce containers of plain, low-fat yogurt1/2 cup low sodium peanut butter1 4 ounce jar of banana baby food1 tbsp honey1 box Milk Bones or other hard dog treat

Directions:Mix first 4 ingredients together and pour into paper cups. Stick a small Milk Bone or other crunchy dog treat into top of mixture to serve as handle when the treats are frozen. Place cups into freezer, and once frozen, peel paper cup away and serve to you hound.

Know the signs of BLOAT!Bloat is the second leading killer of dogs, after can-cer. Learn the signs to save your dog.

- Attempts to vomit (usually unsuccessful) occur every 5 - 30 minutes.- Dog doesn’t act normal - significant anxiety, rest lessness, pacing, and/or rapid breathing.- A “hunched up” appearance.- Absence of normal gurgling tummy (digestion) sounds - put your ear to your hounds tummy and listen.- Bloated or swollen abdomen that feels tight.

If your hound has any bloat symptoms, call your vet or 24-hour emergency vet care clinic immediately! Bloat can kill in less than an hour, so time is of the essence. It may be a good idea to find out where your local emergency event is located before you need to go there. Ask your regular vet for a reference.

When I Am Old and Gray...My step may be slower.I may not hear as well, see or feel as well.

But...My love will be the same, my devotion and my apprecia-

tion will be the same.

My heart and soul will be grateful for all you have done for me, and the time we have spent together...

When I am old and gray.

BHRSC - Foster Volunteers

Got Love? Adopt!

• Each year 3 to 4 million animals die in shelters while only 27% of dogs are adopted from a rescue or shelter. Don’t shop, save a life!

• Looking for a dog who loves kids or cats? When you adopt, you are able to select a dog with a personality to fit your family instead of rolling the dice when you purchase a puppy.

• Rescue dogs make great pets. The majority of dogs in rescues and shelters lose their homes when their families move or experi-ence financial hardship. With the current economy, the number of homeless dogs is increasing. These loving animals will be great additions to your family.

• Stop puppy mills! Many of the dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills & have questionable health and poor breeding. Puppy mill dogs live in deplorable conditions and are not properly cared for or socialized.

Here’s why you should adopt:

If you do, you can sign up to raise funds through the program for Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California! Just go to Ralphs.com and sign into your Rewards Program page, then click Commu-nity Contribution and select BHRSC (organization code # is 80080) and you’re done, it’s that easy. You get all the benefits of Ralph’s Rewards membership – coupons, spe-cial deals and more, and while you shop, you also help raise funds for the homeless hounds of Southern California.

Spay/Neuter your Pets!Spaying or neutering your pet is the only way to avoid pet overpopulation. All Basset Hounds adopted through Bas-set Hound Rescue of Southern California are spayed/neu-tered before they go to their forever home. If your pets aren’t active in the show ring, please have them spayed or neutered for their health and so that you don’t contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. Just because it isn’t bro-ken, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be fixed!

If you would like more information on getting your pets “fixed,” speak to your veterinarian. Or go to www.neu-terspay.org for low-cost spay/neuter services in your area. You can also contact area shelters that may be able to pro-vide information on veterinary clinics in your area.

The BHRSC Adoptable Hound Booth at the Cable Airport Air Show in Upland was a success! The hounds in atten-dance were Emily, Lucy, Irene, and Mr. Ozzy, and they all received lots of positive attention. We handed out close to 100 flyers over the weekend and got a few sign-ups for vol-unteers, mailing list and even one for adoption. We also had a few lengthy conversations with people interested in fostering. All in all, it was a very good day.

In addition to the exposure and interest we also raised a little money for the hounds:

Merchandise Sales = $53.00Raffle for Lazy Dog Café = $40.00Donations = $44.91Homemade Dog Cookie Sales = $24.00For a Grand Total of $161.91

A VERY BIG THANK YOU goes to Katie Ferrari, June Nogami, Andrea Forsell, Bill Schuessler, Nichole Rupp and Priscilla Rameriz for volunteering their time in the cold weather for the hounds. And thanks to June, Katie and Nich-ole for transporting our hounds, and to Mr. Ozzy’s foster family, the Parras, for sending along snacks and drinks for Sunday’s volunteers.

BHRSC Needs FostersBy Jillian Dunaway, BHRSC Foster Coordinator

A lot of people tell me that they don’t foster hounds because “I could never give them back.” Yes, we all get attached to our foster dog and there is sadness when he or she leaves. But there is also an immense feeling of satisfaction that you have been a major part in saving an animal’s life and that it was your love and care that helped to make that hound such a special animal.“So how do I prevent myself from becoming too attached?” Most foster families never think of a foster hound as “mine.” Each dog already belongs to someone else -- it just so hap-pens that they haven’t met that person yet. It’s like baby-sitting - the kids can be loads of fun, but they’re not your kids. Not only does fostering provide a healthier atmosphere for the hound, but it allows us to get to know these dogs, dis-cover their quirks and then better match them to the right human companions. Fostering makes a difference. Everyone benefits. The foster gets to spend time with a special hound, and BHRSC gains space for another hound in need. The foster hound gets a break from kennel life and a second chance at becoming a cherished pet. So what is fostering? For me, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. And you can do it, too!

A Funny Thing Happened... A Note from the Editor.A very funny thing happened when I announced to our fans, friends and followers that I needed a picture of a Basset Hound leaning on legs or sitting on feet for the “Is Your Hound a Leaner?” article. I got a handful of very funny hound photos that really take the whole leaning thing to another level... a level Tilly Mae Riggs likes to call... CLAIMING! Check out these great pictures of some of our friends, in various stages of leaning on, sitting on, and claiming their beloved humans! Tilly likes to “claim”

her human Ben Riggs... she has to let Bosco know who’s in

charge!

Below: Nancy Timmons has “hound-help” while trying

to catch some rays.

Above: Blossom is not leaning or claiming, she’s “pillowing” for sweet Lilly Florez!

BRUNO

ANNA

Hi, my name is BOGIE. I’m a true hound at heart! I’m just a 7-year-old boy looking for a new home. I’d like to find a family with a play buddy, as I do get somewhat lonely. I’ve lived with cats and I’m fine with them, but they don’t really like to play much. Also, I’m house-trained and I know basic commands. I love going on walks and sniffing all the neat stuff we find along the way. And another bonus, I’m a mature boy, and I promise not to chew your things or be destructive while you’re away. Companionship is really important to me, I just want to spend some time with you, and I promise you’ll be first on my lovin’ list!

Hello there! I’m TYLER and I am a refined 10-year-old basset gent. I’m mature (no silly puppy antics for me), and somewhat reserved. My world has been turned upside down. Everything I’ve known my entire life has changed. I am scared and lonely. The wonderful volunteers at BHRSC promise me that this will change soon. They tell me a new family is going to come for me and love me for the rest of my days! I hope you can be the one to show me that everything is going to be okay. Could you scratch my belly, give me treats and love? I hope you get here soon. I promise I will be your faithful companion, friend, confidant and lap/foot warmer! Call soon to meet me.

Are you looking for MR. GOODBAR? Well here I am! I’m a handsome, 6-year-old basset boy looking for a family to love me. I lived with the same family my whole life. They fell on hard times and had to move suddenly. Sadly, there was no room for me in their new place. I’m confused about what has happened, but I don’t hold a grudge. Now I just want to go to a nice home where I will be spoiled and adored. I love going for walks and playing at the dog park. I love, love, love playing with my squeaky toys and know how to amuse myself when you’re busy. Bikes, skateboards and things that move too quickly make me a little nervous so l’d probably do best with older children. I’d do great as an only dog, but I wouldn’t mind sharing my home with a nice, calm, submissive lady hound either! I just know we’ll be great buddies, so please call about me soon.!MR. GOODBAR

MISS DAISY

Hi, my name is MISS DAISY and I’m 7 years young. I was found wandering the streets of Thou-sand Palms and ended up in the shelter. BHRSC swooped in and saved me. I’m a talkative bas-set; I like you to know what is on my mind. My philosophy is “if you don’t ask, you don’t get.” And, what do I want? Well, I like to walk, sniff, and eat treats. But I really crave belly rubs… oh they feel so good. I’ll do anything for a belly rub… really, anything. So, if you’d like a sweet and loveable companion and if you are a fan of giving belly rubs (I hear that it can be very soothing), please call BHRSCto meet me.

Hi there! We’re PERCY and CHARLIE! 5-year-old male basset hound brothers. We’re a matched set! Our former “mom” loved us very much and is as heartbroken as we are to part ways. She said that whoever adopts us will receive a gift of unbelievable value and trusted friends for life. It’s true! We wish our lives weren’t changing but sadly, hounds are not allowed in a retirement community – not even wonderful ones such as ourselves. We are fantastic bassets that love to go for walks. Our tails are always wagging and we live for the love and attention of humans! Our favorite thing though, is laying our head in your lap while you pet us and tell us what lovely, hand-some, good boys we truly are. Oh, and we love to play! We are crate trained, have attended obedience class, come when called and love to be groomed. Charlie and I

would love to stay together. And there are advantages to adding a pair of hounds to your home - too many to list them all here! Baffled by the unexpected turn in the life we previously knew, we really hope we can go to a new home together; won’t you please consider us for your family?

Hello, I’m SINCLAIR. I’m a 10- year-old basset gal who’s looking for a new family to spend my future with. Sadly, my family, after many years together, decided that I could no longer stay with them, so I need to find a new forever home. I’m a very good girl, I love all the typical basset things like lazing in the sun, leisurely strolls and lots of cuddle time. I’m a great cuddler! And I’m a kisser, too! I’m looking forward to being spoiled with belly-rubs, new bones and chewies and maybe a few stuffed squeaky toys thrown in, too. What I really want most though is a loving family of my very own. I have lots to offer, none of which involves puppy shenanigans. Please come meet me soon!
