festival is JJaammaaiiccaa, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012.It’s also timely as Britain’s largest Jamaican community outsideLondon is in Birmingham, the host of the Jamaican Olympic team.

A full range of Jamaican influenced music and culture will populate this year’s festival with some exciting partnerships built in order to present some great events, which include visual arts, dance, fashion and of course music in what promises to be the best BASS yet.

True to our roots and ambition there will be a lot of new talent from the region including llaaddyy LLeesshhuurr RRooxxxxxxaann and RRTTkkaall who perform alongside TTooppccaatt. We also pay homageto some of the best muicians over the past decades, the legendary JJuunniioorr MMuurrvviinn and CChhaannnneell OOnnee’s mighty sounds Play live and members of Steel Pulse and Musical Youth discuss the legacy ofUK reggae pioneers..

Finally and in respect to the Birmingham photographer VVaannlleeyy BBuurrkkeewe have a specially commissioned piece responding to his iconicimage of the 1970’s Africa day on Soho Road – a taster of things tocome in the Autumn of 2012.

To commemorate Jamaica’s 50th year of Independence Birmingham basedMMaarrkk AAnntthhoonnyy CCaarrrroollll exhibits his latest work. Highlighting the determined independent spirit of Rastafarianism, its impact on music,language, promoting their heroes and martyrs such as Marcus Garvey and Haile Selassie.Describing his work Mark says “ This important piece of the jigsaw inJamaica’s history, arguably described in four words, PPEEAACCEE,, LLOOVVEE,, WWAARR aanndd JJUUDDGGEEMMEENNTT”” These words are the key ingredients that describe hiswork. Jamaica’s impact on UK music is long and deep. From Jazz to dancehall, hip hop to grime its impact is all around. Nowhere is this more the case than inBirmingham; from the early 50’s when Jamaican jazz legend AAnnddyy HHaammiillttoonn arrivedthrough the 80’s when SStteeeell PPuullssee’’ss Handsworth Revolution defined Black Britain. Tocelebrate this young Birmingham jazz pianist DDaavviidd GGrreeyy premieres a new show featur-ing re-imaginings of Jazz and reggae classics with a specially created ensemble.

DDaavviidd GGrreeyy is an active part of the Birmingham scene working in schools, with filmand theatre as well as running regular jazz nights in the city. This unique perform-ance will see him bringing together two of the great Black British music styles tosuggest where music could go in the next 50 years.

The relationship between Jamaicans settled in Birminghamand those in Jamaica is explored in this exciting newpiece written by Birmingham spoken word artists DDeeccii44lliiffeeand SSmmaasshh. The differences between two brothers – oneborn in Birmingham and the other in Jamaica come explo-sively to life after the death of their mother. The clash between a light skinned born and bred yardieand a dark skinned Jamaican born in England and affected by English culture. The performance comes to asurprising conclusion on a night out on the town.Will they ever see eye to eye when their differences meet?

THE DRUMAugust 2012 marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Jamaica’s first national hero MMaarrccuuss MMoossiiaahh GGaarrvveeyy; and the re-launch of Garveyism worldwide. building towards this SSiirriiuuss BBuussiinneessss NNeettwwoorrkk will host a night of performances, presentations and live debate to commemorate Garvey’s legacy.

Throughout May Sirius will help young people research to rediscover the largely forgotten storyof one of the most influential figures of the 20th century and share their findings at theevent. With a photographic exhibition, live performances and a Jamaican style reasoning session,this event will be a night of ‘edutainment’ for all.

Showcasing the glamorous side of Jamaica’s biggest export, dancehall,a mix of dancers, DJs and models will transform the urban landscapeof Handsworth into a mash up of style and music not to be missed.Dancehall is the trendsetting music for the 15-30s becoming morestylish with designer consciousness and high end couture.

Channel One have a truly heavy-weight bass sound which compliments their tightselection of old and new dub reggae classics.

In the lead up to a major retrospective by mac Birmingham the UK’smost important black documentary photographer, VVaannlleeyy BBuurrkkee, aspecially created ensemble and school children will perform aunique concert. Musician BBoobbbbiiee GGaarrddnneerr returns to the site of Africa Liberationday 1977 to work with young people from Holyhead and St. Jamesschools in Handsworth to devise a musical set inspired byVanley’s photographic documentation of that Day. For one perform-ance only a group that combines a reggae band with classicalmusicians will back PPrriinnccee JJaammoo (Black Rose Productions) andBirmingham children, whose lyrics are inspired by Vanley’s iconicimages.

This was completed in the face of a music industry whichwas not open to giving opportunities to young British reg-gae artists, and venues that would not allow them to play!

A chance to reminisce, story tell and re-live a crucialperiod in the growth of black music here in the UK.
