The San Francisco Basque Club will be celebrating its Fiftieth Anniver-sary this year in 2010. Along with its annual mus tournament / members’ free lunch and its annual Basque Picnic, the Basque Club will have two additional events to commemorate this special milestone, a Bertso Jaialdia in the spring and a 50th Anniversary Gala in the fall.

The Basque Club’s Members’ free lunch and mus tournament will take place on Sunday, January 31st at the San Francisco Basque Cul-tural Center. The entire mus tournament will be played in one day, with finals being contested immediately following lunch. Teams that qualify for the finals, will be seated together at a special re-served table for lunch. This table will be served first to ensure that the qualifying teams can begin the finals promptly. Mus tournament registration will start at 7:00am, and teams will be seated at 7:45am. The registration fee is $40 per team. The Members’ free lunch will be at 12:30pm.

The event that sparked the creation of the Basque Club was an inadvertently inter-rupted bertso performance by legendary bertsolariak Xalba-dor & Mattin when they were visiting California in 1960. To commemorate this event and to pay tribute to Xalbador & Mattin and

Euskara a full blown ninety minute bertso performance will be exhibited at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center, starting at 4:00pm, with all four active US berstolariak (Gratien Alfaro, Johnny Curutchet, Martin Goicoechea & Jesus Goñi) along with the two biggest names in Bertsolaritza from the Basque Country: The newly crowned Champion, Maialen Lujanbio (see page 7) and the past four time champion, Andoni Egaña. A dinner will follow the bertso performance at 7:00pm ($25).

NABO Convention - RENO

The NABO convention was held in Reno this past summer from July 24th through the 26th and the Zazpiak Bat dancers and Klika performed. The convention coincided with the Reno Basque Club’s festival and the Center for Basque Studies official inauguration of their new location in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center on the University of Ne-vada, Reno campus. The NABO delegates elected Valerie Arrechea as the new NABO President and Marisa Espinal has been appointed as the NABO Secretary.

William Douglass, co-founder of the Center for Basque Studies, and its director for its first 32 years, makes an ad-dress at the inauguration ceremony. “It is the work of hun-dreds and hundreds of people over the last 40 years,” said William Douglass, currently Basque Scholar Professor Emeritus. Douglass related a bit of the history of the cen-ter as it moved from one location to another. It started 42 years ago as one small cubicle occupied by his “messy desk,” to its modern spacious location in the red brick building. There, he joked, he continues to have a small of-fice with a messy desk, but now his is the least significant in the new center.

Ana Mari and Nekane repre-sented NABO in the 2009 International Mus tourna-ment, which was held in Balmaseda, Bizkaia. The 2010 International Tournament will be hosted by NABO in the Los Angeles and Las Vegas vicinities.

Kepa Junkera Show

The Basque Cultural Center is proud to present an evening with Kepa Junkera, the Basque Country’s most acclaimed con-temporary artist.

Junkera was born in Bilbo, Bizkaia, and took to the accordion at a very young age after his mother and grandfather introduced him to music. In 1983, after several years of teaching himself the diatonic accordion, Junkera met the legendary basque group, Oskorri, and went on tour with them. By 1990, Junkera had turned solo and had already released two al-

bums. Thereafter, he began creating a new style combining jazz with his original style, Trikitixa.

Junkera is widely known for putting all of his energy into his music and creating innovative and unique styles. In addition to producing ten al-bums, Junkera has teamed up with stars like Julio Pereira, Carlos Nunez, and the Irish group The Chieftans. Junkera's style emphasizes his uniqueness and makes his performances thrilling to listen to. Junkera was the first accordion player to unite the original trikitixa style with modern classical style and transformed it into a style that is fun to listen to and gets one excited. Junkera continues to amaze people with his electrifying live performances. Junkera will be accompanied at the Basque Cultural Center by renowned musicians Camilo Landau (guitar & txalaparta) & Robert Schoville (drums and percussions).

The San Francisco Basque Cul-tural Center dedicated its summer festival weekend in memory of Aita Martxel Tillous, which culmi-nated in a memorial mass on Sun-day, August 30th, officiated by Aita Jean-Michel Lastiri. Tributes to Aita Tillous were delivered in Bertsos (sung verses) by the El-garrekin Choir, Mixel Etxekopar, Gratien Alfaro, Johnny Curutchet, Martin Goicoechea, Jean-Louis Laca and Michel Aire. Maialen Lujanbio Wins Bertsolaritza Championship

Bilbao Exhibition Center-BEC held the 2009 Bertsolari Championship final during the whole day on De-cember 13th. This event takes place everty four years in the Basque Country. The Bertsolaris Champi-onship 2009 started on October 3rd and finished on December 13th.

The last championship took place in 2005. Over 13,000 attended that final which also took place in the

Bilbao Exhibition Centre, where Andoni Egaña won his fourth Cham-pionship.

Maialen Lujanbio, 33 of Hernani, Gipuzkoa, won the 'txapela' in the 2009 Bertsolaritza Championship final. The day’s competition began with eight bertsolaris and then it came down to Maialen Lujanbio and Amets Arzallus of Hendaia, Lapurdi. Maialen’s total score was 1,965 points. Maialen Lujanbio and Andoni Egaña will perform at the Bertso Jaialdia at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center on Saturday, March 13th (see front page for more details).

Tens of Thousands Rally In Support Of The Egunkaria Five Euskal Herriko Kazeta / Le Journal du Pays Basque

December 19th, 2009—Bilbao, Bizkaia - Around 30,000 people braved the frigid temperatures and took part in a national demonstra-tion in Bilbao to support the five former Egunkaria executives (Martxelo Otamendi, Joan Mari Torrealdai, Iñaki Uria, Txema Auz-mendi, Xabier Oleaga) indicted in the Egunkaria case. The Basque language daily newspaper “Euskaldunon Egunkaria” was closed down by the Spanish authorities on February 20th, 2003, and ten members of the administration council and editorial team were arrested and allegedly tortured. Some of them were also imprisoned.

Although the Public Prosecutor has called for this case to be dropped once and for all due to a lack of evidence, the Spanish National Crimi-nal Court has decided that the trial will be held, basing itself exclu-sively on the private prosecution brought by two organizations: the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT) and Dignidad y Justi-cia, who are seeking prison sentences of between 12 and 14 years for the 5 Egunkaria executives and 14-15 years´ ban on holding public office or another position, as well as a ban on standing in political elections.

The Egunkaria Five called for this rally on the eve of their trial and lead the march before 30,000 persons, who represented most of Basque Society, including many Basque language associations, many personalities from cultural organizations and from the press, and from all Basque political parties and trade unions except the pro-Spanish unionists parties PSOE and PP and trade union UGT.

The symbolic image of the day was the presence at the rally of the three former Lehendakaris (Basque Presidents): Juan José Ibarretxe, José Antonio Ardanza and Carlos Garaikoetxea.

At the end of the march, Joan Mari Torrealdai raised an old copy of Egunk-aria, which received an enormous ovation by the crowd, and read a statement on behalf of all five, thanking the public for their support over the past seven years. The trial started on December 21st and will resume in January.

tory of this sport through the various exhibits which include archival photographs, sketches, paintings, and a state of the art video presen-tation that explains the history of Senpere and Basque handball and Xistera (Jai Alai). Euskamerikan Artzain Pastorala Performed at The Basque Cultural Center

During the Basque Cultural Center's summer festival this past August, two performances were done of a “pastorala”, a unique theatrical play, where the entire script is sung, a spe-cialty of the Basque province of Xiberoa. The pastorala, EUSKAMERIKAN ARTZAIN PASTORALA, was written by Mixel Etxekopar and directed by Nicole Lougarot. It was performed by high school students from the Lycée du Pays de Soule from Sohüta, Xiberoa (near Maule). The students were here as part of a student exchange program with students from NABO clubs, who had earlier visited Xiberoa in June. The theme of the pastorala centered upon the main character Han (There) and the hardships he faced in America, after emigrating from the Basque Country. Han experiences many of

the hardships faced by the Basque sheepherders including loneliness, homesickness, poverty and difficulty with a new language. The Pastorala shows Basque Americans working together to form NABO and finding ways to maintain their culture in a modern world.

Mixel Etxekopar was inspired to write this pastorala after his first visit to California for the 2002 NABO Convention in South San Francisco and after hearing Miren Azkarate at the NABO Con-vention say: "In the United States you have found a new way to be Basque." Mixel started by writ-ing the song “Kalifornia” upon his return home in 2002, which is about the Basque immigration experience, and this led to the writing of the pastorala. In 2007 the pastorala took life with these students as part of their Euskara curriculum and made its debut at the Xiru Festival in the village of Gotein on March 14th, 2008 (see Spring 2008 issue of Basque Club Aldizkaria - page 2). Right before this de-but perform-

ance, bertsoak were exchanged with two young bertsolaris in Gotein and with Johnny Curutchet in South San Francisco live over the internet via Skype. This showed organizers that Euskara was alive and kicking in the U.S. and solidified their desire to bring this pastorala to California.
